Easy to shoot even the big bad 357mag. I have been warned of.
The recoil was very manageable. I had very good control first time I fired it. I have"t a critical word to say, it"s really enjoyable to shoot.

I have the 7 inch barrel in stainless. Easy to shoot and clean. Very accurate. A bit on the heavy side. But, that helps with the recoil from the magnum rounds. (Posted on 12/11/11)

  3. Sturdy and reliable Review by Frank P

I have put approx 1500 rounds through this revolver without any issues. It is very accurate in single action. The double action pull is a bit heavy. Recoil with 650lb+ of muzzle energy 357 mag is reasonable. 38+P is mild and the regular 38 special feels like a 22 out of this heavy revolver. The front sight can be hard to see in low light, so I swapped it out for a Hi-Viz front.

I own the blued 4 inch model

  4. I trust this gun to be my nightstand gun. Review by Fred Howard

I'm an averaged-size guy: about 190 pounds on 5' 9" frame--this gun fits me perfectly (I've the 6" blued .357 version). I find this gun controllable with medium Hornady 125 and 158 grain self-defense .357 magnum loads (have not fired hot Buffalo Bore or Cor-Bons through this gun). I can get easy one-handed follow up bullseyes at 25 yards with this gun. I've put about a thousand rounds through the weapon with no problems...it just works. Folks say that this gun is built like a tank...they are spot-on. If you are a smaller person, this is still a great SD gun: just go with .38 Specials. Recoil with the .38s is minimal with this gun. For most folks, a four-inch barrel or less is fine, but I just like the six when out in the woods. This gun is easy to take down and clean (a revolver should be kept clean just like a semi-auto). Internal parts seem robust: there's nothing that seems likely to break even after thousands of rounds. Low price but a quality gun. Look at the excellent SP101 if you're a CCW permit holder: that smaller gun is still very robust and is much easier to carry. Best advice: buy both...you can get both for the price of a Smith and Wesson. Both Rugers are double action (with single option) with a transfer bar safety also, which makes them safe to carry with a round under the hammer. Grips are excellent (Hogue), but you might want to change the front sights to tritium because the factory version can be a bit hard to pick up during target acquistion. Recommend spending a bit more on the stainless versions too. I might buy another one! (Posted on 2/16/11)

Pros: Shoots everything I feed, Accurate, Simple Design, Easy to maintain, Easy to shoot well, Nice Recoil, Ergonomical, Fits very nicely in my hand, Reliable, Easy to Use

  5. GP100 is a good value. Review by Jeremy Davis

Good value for a large revolver. The stock grip is ugly as sin but does a good job accepting recoil. Buy some aftermarket grips and the whole look of the gun will change. It's heavy, but it's supposed to be. Full 357 loads are a joy to shoot and 38's hardly raise the barrel.
If you want a long lasting revolver but don't want to pay a s&w price then the ruger gp100 is a great way to go. (Posted on 1/18/11)
