.30-06 Springfield History

The .30-06 Springfield was adopted by the US military in 1906 to replace the 30-03, 30-40 Krag, and 6mm Lee Navy cartridges. The cartridge nomenclature is derived from 30 for the caliber of the bullet and “06” for the year it was introduced. It remained the US military’s primary cartridge for rifles and machine guns for 50 years.
