Gauss Rifles: The Future is NOW!

Sci-Fi films have always taken big liberties with theoretical physics and fledgling technologies.  The ion engines powering Star Wars' TIE fighters produce far more thrust than their real-life counterparts which put out thrust that's about equal to the weight of a sheet of printer paper, and "setting phasers to stun" is only communicated on this planet with a police officer yelling "TASER TASER TASER!"

Gauss Rifles, also known as Coil Guns, can be found in a number of films in the science fiction genre, and thanks to ArcFlash Labs in Las Angeles, CA, they are now a reality.  ArcFlash Labs' EMG-01 prototype worked as a proof-of-concept and looked like a gun pulled from the arsenal of the last "Doom" remake, and their new EMG-02 model has refined the technology into a much more manageable and user-friendly package.

Gauss Rifles use a series of batteries and capacitors, along with enough copper wire to arouse the most disciplined junkie, to send a magnetic projectile down-range.  Due to the absence of gun powder within the system, they in no way fall under the legal purview of being a "firearm" and are entirely unragulated, just as the Founding Fathers intended.  Instead, the furthest they can legally and realistically be regulated is by treating them as pellet or paintball guns.  The closest comparison between a gauss rifle and anything else would be an airsoft gun due to their plastic exteriors, batteries, and (get ready for this) unregulated full-auto capabilities.

Ian McCollum of Forgotten Weapons shared a wonderfully in-depth video of ArcFlash Labs' new coil gun.
