Top 5 Blackpowder Rifles for Hunting

There’s something raw and rewarding about hunting with a blackpowder rifle. For me, it slows everything down in the best way it’s not just about pulling the trigger, it’s about the process. The prep, the patience, the precision. And if you're into that too, finding the right muzzleloader can really elevate your game.

Over the seasons, I've had the chance to try out several models, from budget-friendly workhorses to precision-tuned long-range machines. If you’re thinking about diving into the world of blackpowder hunting (or upgrading your setup), here are my top five picks based on what actually works in the field.

CVA Accura V2

The Accura V2 has never let me down, even in pouring rain and biting cold. I’ve taken it out in some pretty unforgiving conditions, and it just keeps performing. The Bergara barrel is a dream it’s accurate, consistent, and holds up beautifully over time.

What I appreciate most is the Quick Release Breech Plug. I can pop it out without any tools, even with cold fingers. It’s small stuff like that that makes a big difference on a long hunt.

What I Love:

  • Dead-on accuracy, even at longer distances

  • Easy cleanup after the hunt

  • Feels solid in-hand definitely not flimsy

Downside:

  • On the heavier side, but the stability it adds is worth it

Traditions Buckstalker XT Redi-Pak

If you’re just getting started, this is where I tell friends to look first. I picked up the Redi-Pak as a backup gun, but it’s turned into a surprisingly reliable primary for quick hunts. It’s light, comes with everything you need, and shoots true.

It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles, but that’s the point it’s simple and effective. Great for short- to mid-range hunts or younger hunters getting their first taste of muzzleloading.

Why It Works:

  • Super lightweight and easy to carry

  • Comes with all the basics

  • Budget-friendly, but not “cheap” feeling

Heads-Up:

  • You’ll outgrow it if you start pushing out past 100 yards regularly

CVA Wolf Muzzleloader

This one surprised me. I grabbed the Wolf as a backup during a trip out west, and it held its own in rugged terrain. It’s basic but in a good way. Lightweight, reliable, and really comfortable to shoot. I’ve loaned it out to friends on hunts, and they’ve had great results too.

The recoil pad on this thing is seriously underrated. After a few shots, you realize just how smooth and easy it is on the shoulder.

Personal Take:

  • Perfect for all-day hunts when every ounce counts

  • Great beginner muzzleloader or backup

  • Low recoil, very manageable even for smaller-framed shooters

Trade-Off:

  • It’s not a precision rifle, but it gets the job done well

Traditions Pursuit G4 Ultralight

If you hike into your hunting spots like I do, weight matters. The Pursuit G4 is the lightest muzzleloader I’ve used, and it doesn’t skimp on performance either. The camo finish looks sharp, and it’s held up well through thick brush and sudden downpours.

I like that it comes with a scope already mounted just be prepared to fine-tune or upgrade it later. But out of the box, it’s hunt-ready.

Field Highlights:

  • Carry it all day without fatigue

  • Stays accurate in cold and wet

  • Fast, tool-free breech plug system

Worth Noting:

  • Factory scope does the job, but I eventually swapped mine out for a clearer sight picture

Remington Model 700 Ultimate Muzzleloader

This is the heavy-hitter. When I want long-range power and precision, this is what I reach for. It's based on the Remington 700 platform, so it feels more like a modern rifle than a traditional muzzleloader. That means tighter groups, higher powder capacity, and serious knockdown power.

It’s not for quick, casual hunts but if you’re chasing elk across wide-open country, this one delivers.

Why It’s a Beast:

  • Shoots like a centerfire rifle fast, flat, and hard-hitting

  • Clean ignition system that’s easy to use

  • Great for long-range shots with confidence

Keep in Mind:

  • It’s pricey and heavy but worth it for the serious hunter

Final Thoughts

There’s a certain satisfaction that comes with taking game using a blackpowder rifle. It feels earned. Slowing down, lining up that one perfect shot it’s an experience modern rifles just can’t replicate.

If I had to choose just one for versatility, I’d go with the CVA Accura V2. For newcomers, that Buckstalker XT is an easy win. And if you’re all about long shots, the Remington Model 700 Ultimate is a powerhouse.

No matter which one you pick, spend time getting to know it load, shoot, clean, repeat. Because with blackpowder, confidence in your gear is everything.
