Though dozens of different revolvers were employed on the American frontier, none are more synonymous with the term old West than the ubiquitous Colt SAA (Single Action Army) revolver. Originally introduced in 1873, the 7.5" .45 Colt version was officially adopted by the United States Army that same year hence its Army designation. Carried by such frontier legends as Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp, and Jesse James, a fitting testament to the longevity of the legendary Peacemaker was its continued use long after the West was won: it remained the primary duty sidearm of Frank Hamer, the Texas Ranger whose posse ended Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrows crime spree in 1934, and was carried by George S. Patton in both world wars. Over 357,000 1st generation Colt Peacemaker revolvers were produced between 1873 and 1941.
