Browning Bar M1918 Capacity
The BAR is chambered in .30-06 and feeds from 20-round detachable box magazines. This low capacity was chosen for two reasons including the US War Department’s historied tradition of insisting that their war fighters conserve ammo. The other reason for the short magazines is reloading: shorter magazines could easily be reloaded while the operator maintained a low profile to minimize getting domed by the enemy.
Browning Bar M1918 Feature
The Browning Atomatic Rifle model 1918 is a fully-automatic rifle that operates on a long-stroke gas piston driven lever-locked action. The BAR fires from the open bolt and has a 3-position fire selector that allows the user to switch between safe, slow- and fast-fire modes. This is achieved by switching a fire rate reducing mechanism on and off. The BAR was built with a 24 inch barrel paired with a hooded front sight and a square-notch rear sight that could be flipped up to reveal an elevation-adjustable sight.
Browning Bar M1918 Ergonomics
The BAR was originally designed with a traditional half-pistol grip that blended into the stock, and you definitely needed big hands to get a proper grip on it. The non-reciprocating charging handle is located along the left side of the receiver with the safety selector sitting below, and the magazine release is located along the front wall of the inside of the trigger guard. While the gun is definitely heavy for a rifle, its center of gravity is comfortably located just behind the back of the beefy handguard.

Measuring 47 inches long with an unloaded weight of 16 pounds, the BAR handles like a heavy rifle. This allowed its users to keep up with the other troops that were rocking M1 garands and M1A1 Thompsons while offering full-power automatic fire. While reloads were rather frequent in gun fights, the BAR allowed its operators to effectively execute the “fire and maneuver” combat doctrine that they adopted after WWI.

The patron saint of putting holes in things, John Moses Browning, had a very effective design policy when engineering and making any of his guns: “Design it strong enough so it works, then make it stronger than it needs to be.” In this, the BAR is no different. The BAR is made with hardened steel components with stainless steel internal components, and the stock and handguard are both cut from American walnut sealed with boiled linseed oil.
