Henry H010 45-70 Lever Description

Introduced by the U.S. Army in 1873, this cartridge was first known as the .45 Government. As it made its way into commercially produced firearms the name .45-70 appeared, because it was loaded with a 70 grain blackpowder charge with 405 and 500 grain bullets. Virtually all rifle making companies of the late 19th century chambered their single shots and lever actions for the .45-70. As those companies and their rifles faded away, the .45-70’s popularity did not. Factory .45-70 ammunition has been cataloged continuously since 1873 but never in the variety of loadings available now, in the 21st century. They range from 405 grain lead bullet, low-velocity loads for deer hunting and target shooting to high-velocity 300 to 400 grain jacketed bullet ones meant for large game. The Model H010 .45-70 can handle them all. Its receiver is blued steel fitted with an 18.43″ round barrel underneath and a tubular magazine of four-round capacity. Its pistol-grip buttstock and steel-capped forend are crafted of beautiful American walnut and cut with checkering to provide a sure grip. The buttstock wears a soft rubber pad to help shooters handle .45-70 recoil from a 7.08 lb. rifle. The model H010 will be factory issued with fully adjustable semi-buckhorn rear, and brass beaded front sight. Because the receiver is drilled and tapped, scope mounting is an easy option.

Honestly disappointed with this rifle. The sights would not stay in place, the fit and finish and accuracy were good but the action had constant problems. 60 rounds in from the factory the locking mechanism keeping the l...ever in place broke so I sent it back for repairs, when I got it back the very first round jammed and tried to double feed causing a dangerous situation where there was a live round in the chamber and I couldn't extract it because the lever had jammed in place due to another round being stuck under the loading gate. After some careful force was applied i removed the live round and sent it back to Henry's and have asked for a full refund. I'm going to be generous and give 3 stars because Henry's customer service was very good but honestly I'm disappointed with their centerfire lever guns. more

This is my fourth Henry firearm, and all have been exquisite! This one is no exception! The wood is beautiful, and snugs to the frame very VERY well! Henry rifles are 100{b46161f674002216c2ee4ab47544faa51717ada9a3a1319b1...8392122038b8268} made in the USA, and unquestionably the BEST lever action rifles on the current market! I dare say that they may, indeed, be the best rifles on the market period! The action is as smooth as silk with no need to lower the gun from your shoulder to cycle it for the next round to enter the chamber. The .45 - 70 is my favorite caliber in my favorite brand of rifle. I know from experience that Henry stands by their products for the life of the gun, no need to prove that you are the original purchaser. I would absolutely recommend their products! Bud's, as always, was great to deal with and they shipped this rifle to my FFL quickly. Bud's is my first choice to look for firearms. more

I'm a proud owner of the 45-70 government. I was so excited when I first ordered it, but not as excited when I went to pick it up from the FFL on 04/05/18. The beautiful walnut stock and the quality of the finished is as...tounding. This will be my wild hog Henry. I always wanted a Henry and and so proud I got one. There will be a next Henry, but I'm deciding on 3 of them, 41,44, 357, or a mare 357. I cant make up my mind, but Bud's is like a candy factory for children, the more you buy the more you want. Excellent quality on this lever action. if you are looking for one, forget the rest and get the best, Henry " MADE IN AMERICA OR NOT MADE AT ALL" more

I had alway been a big Marlin fan, that is until Remington bought them out. I bought a Marlin 1895GBL in 45/70 about a year after Remington took over and it was the worse made rifle I've ever had the displeasure of ownin...g. I sold it less than a month later at a great loss. This all led me to look at Henry rifles and my purchase of a Henry Big Boy in .44 mag. I loved that gun so much that I had to get this Henry in 45/70. The wood to metal fit is great as is the finish. The cartridges feed smoothly, no need to apply a great deal of force to the lever. The recoil pad does it's job well in soaking up even heavy 45/70 loads and accuracy is fantastic. I'll have this rifle till my dying day. My recommendation is don't even consider a new Marlin, buy a Henry and you'll never regret it. Bud's was great as usual! more

I just bought my first lever action, a Henry H010 45-70. So while I am not the best person to give a detailed review I can say the action is very smooth, it shoots well and accurately, it doesn't kick near as bad as I th...ought it would and it's a beautiful gun. I like the tube fed magazine and that was a factor in my decision over a Marlin but I would not fault anyone for going with their personal preference. The feel of the rifle is well balanced and solid and the recoil pad seems to be very sturdy. I am installing a scope soon as the buckhorn site does not agree with my 48 year old eyes. I am very pleased with my Henry and I am looking forward to purchasing another. This rifle has replaced my AR as my favorite gun to shoot. more

I purchased a Henry Rifle with the Octagon barrel and this is a beautiful rifle but it can't shoot for nothing. Great lever action .22 caliber rifle!
Always wanted a Henry rifle and picked this Classic model to start off with. Well made and a beautiful looking rifle right out of the box! The elegant genuine American walnut stock really gives this rifle some character!... Very well balanced and the lever is the smoothest lever action I've have ever used in a lever action rifle! Made only in America! Thank you Cabela's making this rifle available for sale and thank you Anthony Imperato and the Henry Repeating Arms Company for manufacturing such a fine quality firearm!! more

The 45-70 is the latest of 12 Henry rifles I own. It's a bear. It's ammo makes it the least cost effective Henry unless you reload. But for those who do reload like myself, you'll find it is a comfortable, reliable rifle.... Don't get me wrong. I had to put a deceleration pad on the butt stock. It's a big bore gun in every sense of the word, but it's power and accuracy make it one of my favorite. It has the smoothest action of most any lever action rifles I've shot. I do love this gun. But be prepared, it's not for someone that is ignorant of its power. more

    Great toy
I always wanted a Henry .22 LR. Compared with the other .22s that I have, this one is the best and it holds the most rounds. Fun to load, fun to shoot, I took it in the woods and it is dead on from 50 yards.

Very nice looking rifle. The wood has a tight pattern on the grain and is very attractive, easily the best looking wood & blue gun that I own. The action cycles very smooth. The trigger.....wow....the trigger has zero t...ake up and breaks very crisply and at a light enough pull to be better than some of my bolt action rifles. The rear stock has very nice dimensions and doesn't feel cramped at all as do other .45/70 level guns with this barrel length. The curved pistol grip allows for a very natural position of your hand. The forearm stock is nice and rounded with excellent checkering on all sides. The recoil pad is more than adequate for the recoil generated by this gun. The iron sights on this gun are very well designed in that they are both fast on target, yet capable of precise aiming. The loading tube is easy to use for swiftly loading the rifle. There is nothing about this gun I'd change. I'm very glad I bought this Henry from Bud's. more

    Henry .22
Anybody who likes to shoot .22's, either at the range or just out in the woods plinking, will love a Henry firearm. Nice looking gun, absolutely no problems to ruin your day, just go out, be safe and take plenty of ammo ...because you won't be spending time clearing fail-to-feed, fail-to-fire or any other problems. I'm going to buy a Henry .17 to see what that's all about. A friend of mine has one and I'm tired of hearing him crow about how I should have one too. more

    Tack driver
Henry H001 is a tack driver, and probably the best buy in a firearm ever. Gave one to my daughter for Christmas several years ago. But when I added a Williams peep sight, I got to shoot it, too, to dial in the new sight....In 50-yd sight adjustment pairs, 3 pairs were connected and 1 pair was the same hole. Have two other tack driver .22s around, including my dad's 27" barrel model 67a, and my 30" barrel low-wall, and this little rifle shoots 50yd just as well as either of those.Add to that solid walnut and made in USA. more

    My Favorite Rifle
I have always loved the lever action rifles because I grew up watching John Wayne movies and the Rifleman TV shows. I have a lever Action 30-30 that I use for Deer hunting, but I wanted a lever action .22 for plinking an...d shooting at the 25 yard pistol range, so when I found a Henry on sale for just over $200 I jumped on it. Mine shoots perfect I love how smooth the lever action is and the trigger has a great feel and just the right amount of pull, I put a small scope on it since my eyes aren't as good as they used to be, and I can shoot groups the size of a dime at 25 yards. My son in law is always giving me grief because I bring it to the range every time and wave off the chance to shoot his AR and opt to shoot this instead, call me old fashioned but I just love the old western style rifles. more

Shipping was extremely fast. 1 budsgunshop.com. The rifle is extremely accurate and works flawlessly. I have one minor problem. The 2nd shot I put through the rifle made the stock chip where it connects to the receiver ...on the right side of the hammer. It isn't a huge deal, but I'm trying to contact Henry to get it fixed. I had the rifle looked at by an excellent smith and all they said was it was a minor flaw in the wood. Other than that. The rifle is way nicer than the marlin lever actions I have seen lately. more

    Super Rifle
I have at least 6 .22's including a pistol, a Remington Nylon 66 Apache, and a single shot Cooey I've owned for almost 60 years. These were my previous favorites. But, THIS is my new favorite. This rifle's action is a sm...ooth as butter, never jambs, it feeds and shoots everything from CBcaps to LRStingers, and it fits great across the gun grips, and into the back seat on my ATV. The wood used in the stock and fore stock is quality finished, and looks great.. I Love this rifle. My grand kids love this rifle. If your buying someone their first .22 don't hesitate buying this Henry. Whether it's the first .22 or the 10th, you will fall in love with this rifle.. As expected... The Henry showed up albeit outside the advertised shipping window. I suspect this was because of the nasty weather in Bud's area - so I can't hold it against them. This 45-70 is of the quality I have seen ...with my other Henry rifle. Beautiful wood and well fit. I took it outside for a single shot just to ensure functionality - no problem. The trigger was very light - don't know if this is good or bad yet. The true test will be this spring when I sight it in, and this fall when I try it out in PA bear country. Good job Buds, and great job Henry (again). more

Next lets talk about quality well with out even handling the gun that much the forestock some how works its way loose and there is no way to tighten it theres only a front mount on it so if it works its way loose theres no fixing it. Also the gun jams a good bit also.TERRIBLE GUN. more

    Accurate and reliable
I have owned my Henry H001 for two months now. It is very accurate and reliable. I purchased a 4x32 scope for it and iit knocks the center of a bullseye out at 25 yards. I did have some misleads for a few days. It turned... out to be a cleaning issue, The carriage lever was sticking and making the tip of the cartridge spring high above the chamber entrance. When this happened, trying to close the breech resulted in a jam. Once I cleaned the loading tube and the carriage mechanism along with lubrication of the cleaned parts, I haven't had a misload in over 500 rounds since. The action is extremely smooth. more

    Awesome gun
My wife bought this for me for christmas about 5 years ago. The iron sights are great, but I had a 4-12 Bushnell Banner sitting around, so I put it on using see-through mounts. The thing is dead on and a lot of fun to us...e. When I take it to the range I hardly get to shoot it, everyone there can't get over how fun it is to use. I have found that hollow points jam sometimes. I shoot CCI shorts (subsonic) ,it holds about 20 of them, and you can't beat them for plinking. All in all a fantastic gun and a definitely the one I shoot the most. more

I love this rifle! Great quality and very nice shooting. I have been working up some 405 gr loads for bear and it will thump you in the shoulder with the heavy loads but it always brings a smile too my face. Some prefer ...the loading gate on their levers but the loading tube works fine for me. Bud's did a great job as usual. more

So here is my take on the Henry 45-70. I own three other Henrys and I have to say that I"m a bit disappointed in this one. I purchased this due to the fact that the new Marlins are sketchy at best and the Uberti is a lit...tle rich for my blood. The stock and the forearm finish is OK but not great, the checkering is not well done, the finish on the receiver is poor and does not go with the rest of the weapon. The receiver has a parkerized feel while the lever, the barrel and the magazine tube have a smooth blued finish. I'm not a fan of the magazine tube with the sliding plunger. To me it feels cheap, I have the same issue with my .45 LC big boy. The action is not as smooth as my other Henrys. The front sight and barrel band assembly is terrible. It has the same cast barrel band as my Henry .22, just larger. Again this makes what should be a beautiful rifle feel cheap. One thing I am impressed by is the rear sight. I purchased a Skinner sight to accomplish the same thing on my big boy. more

Purchased this Henry H010 45-70 from Buds earlier this year. Finally had one in stock. Beautiful rifle. Nice firing. Just purchased the new Henry H011 44-40 Original. It is night and day in a category above the fit and f...inish of ANY Henry rifle I have ever seen. Beautiful walnut and brass. Best of all made in America. This was my 15th weapon purchased from Buds. more

    22 magnum
Nice gun i bought it in 22 Winchester magnum and put a Bushnell 3 to 9 3200 scope on it. The rifle is accurate and fun to shoot i have shot over 500 gophers with it this summer. It seems to like Winchester 45 grain JHP a...mmo the best out of the five kinds i have tried so far. I was shooting three shot groups at sixty five meters that would hide under a nickel. more

    Disappointed
I bought the Frontier model with octagon barrel. Fun gun to shoot, accurate and a smooth action BUT there are problems with the tubular mag. assy. I can't keep rust off of it and the whole assy shoots itself loose after ...a couple of mags. full. Contacted Henry via e-mail last week and still haven't heard back from them. Maybe they should spend more on QC and less on advertising! more

    No Hollow points
Very nice feel and the workmanship is very good! Had trouble with hollow point rounds every 5-8 rounds would jam when loading! After talking to a sales rep. from Cabelas & e mailing Henry about this problem I now use... round nose rounds? almost 500 round later and no Jamming! I am really pleased with this rifle! Just stay away from Hollows. more

    AMAZING!
Best handling and shooting rifle I have ever shot. You pull this gun to your shoulder and it just wants to drive tacks. You would swear this action is soaked in butter it's so smooth. It's very light but feels like its b...uilt like a tank. I can see this rifle being regarded as one of the best ever built 50 years from now. more

    good gun
i got ths gun in .22lr as a birthday present from family. when i first cycled the action, it felt like butter. i was so exited to shoot this! when i finally shot the rifle i noticed that it shot high at 50yds with the re...ar sight all the way down to the barrel. this problem was quickly fixed with the grinder, now it shoots great! the accuracy is pretty good (seeing i can cover a dime with the group at 30yd) and the rifle is balanced just right.i really enjoy this gun. more

    Henry return
Just got .22lr back from Henry after it jamming right out of the box. Henry was extremely helpful and had the gun turned around and back in my hands in less than a week. Bass Pro on the other hand was not as helpful. The...y said that once they send the gun off it is out of their hands, They were not willing to follow up with Henry, they could not even tell me when it arrived. I was given the number to Henry and had to deal direct with Henry. You would think that since Bass Pro sold you the gun they would be more than willing to make sure you got your new gun back ASAP. Once I got the rifle back and took it to the range it loaded and shoot fine. Thanks Henry. more

An excellent rifle for the price.
Compared this with the Browning BL of the same caliber.Much better aiming sight on the Henry. No 'play' in the trigger mechanism whereas the Browning annoyingly had some.Loved the ease of the lever mechanism. Unlike the B...rowning, it's very plain and unadorned - but I found it works to a tee. When considering the fact that you're paying almost twice as much for the Browning, the Henry is a wonder buy. more

    Great Gun
Bought this gun in a .22 mag and it is so much fun to shoot. Gun is really accurate with the iron sights and has loads of power. I have not put a scope on it and probably wont because its just to much fun to shoot with i...ron sights. All my friends that have shot this gun also think it is great. Only problem I have is the lever is a little small for my hand but it is just a rim fire rifle so this is expected. Overall one of my favorite guns to just go out and play with. more

    Brings back memories
When I was a young man/teenager my Grandfather bought a rifle very much like this one for me to use gopher hunting in Ontario. It was lost some many years ago when my Father turned in all of our old .22s due to the long ...gun registry and fear. I bought this in the .22 wmr as a plinking rifle for the Wife and to teach my Grandson when he is old enough, but honestly, after I got it zeroed in at 100 yards I am having way to much fun with it to give it up. This gun fires straight after 50 rounds and no jams it is a treat and is so much fun to shoot, a great beginner rifle for those who might be afraid around the bigger calibers. I still plan on teaching my Grandson but I might have to buy him his own, LOL.Cheers,Jim more

    Great first rifle
My wife purchase one of these for her very first gun in 2011. She bought a Nikon scope for it at the same time and brought the gun home. I bore sighted the scope and sighted the scope in for her. She shot it a few times ...and we got it zeroed for her. I shot it and love the way it handles and how smooth it functions. This rifle sold us on Henry rifles. I just purchased 6 of this model for my grandsons. I wanted something that would last them a lifetime from PopC. I have also gotten a Golden Boy 17 HMR and a 44 Mag Big Boy since then. I am also wanting the 357 Mag, 45-70, and 30-30 Henry.Hopefully I will be reviewing these in the near future. more

Very impressed with this .22 WMR
just yesterday i tried out this firearm for the first time, got some high vis targets at 25yds. i used winchester supreme 30gr. hollow points and elevation was dead center and about 4 inces to the right. after some adjus...ting it performed incredibally. at 25 yds open sights it maintained 0.75" groups. Took it out to the field and had no problems hitting gophers at 75yds open sights. Firearm is exceptional for the price and the fit and finish is commendable. great firearm for new and experienced shooters alike. Would perform well with a 4x scope more

    Great Gun
The Henry Rifle is one great gun. Its performance as a .22 LR can only be rivaled by the Smith and Wesson M&P 15-22. It has an action that is so smooth it makes it the most shoot-able small caliber gun I have ever fi...red. It has less recoil than my Gamo air rifle and it can be chambered in .22S/.22L/.22LR. Right out of the box I was hitting a propane tank at 50 yards. I understand that 50 yards is nothing for a .22 but when I shot the rifle target next to the propane tank I had put half inch groups of 25 around a Quarter sized dot. I have no questions about this guns accuracy. If you buy the octagon frontier you will get a set of golden sights that are both accurate and Stylish. This Gun is great for beginners and people who love a lot of ammo for a little price. I suggest this to everyone with a gun permit. The only thing that represents a disadvantage is the price, but keep in mind that if you buy a Henry frontier for a price between 380-450 then you get the quality of a marlin priced 550-650. So if you like guns or gun related activity this is the gun for you. more

    Great Rimfire Gun
I received this gun last Christmas. It has the smoothest action of any 22 that I currently own. The gun is compact enough to carry in the canoe (or kayak) and not worry about space issues for overnight camping trips. The... craftsmanship of the gun only adds to the shooting experience (I really like the walnut stock). Overall, I think this is the best value on the rimfire market today. more

    fun gun
This is a nice and affordable rifle. Since it is American made I personally like it even more. It is nice to look at and simple to shoot. Small kids can handle this caliber easily. The sights on mine were spot on right o...ut of the box. About the only thing keeping this from a 5 star rating is the weight. This gun weighs a lot more than my Marlin with an all synthetic stock. more
