Was as advertised. Nice cheap throw away gun. It is well made for what it is and Shooting it is fun. Had a couple of failures to feed but after a couple of clips was great. Fun and built as expected for this type of gun,... I would buy again. Is a good home defense gun but would not carry. more

I love the gun. It is big, ugly and scary looking. I fired a few clips through it. Federal 180 and Grizzly 200 HP. It ate the Federals all day long. It didn't like the HP's at all and each time was a failure to feed. Did...n't bother me any. This monster is picky. I'm ok with that. I loved how the heavy slide took most of the recoil. For distance, it's much more accurate than my Glock. I wouldn't want to conceal carry it. I did carry it while backcountry camping a few days open carry and it was fine by me. I wish it ate HP's, then I could use it for home defense, but now it is designated to black bear defense. more

Product came sooner than expected, exactly as advertised online. I love that this piece was not only a preferential choice, but that Bud' s Gun Shop was the most economical: bang for the buck. Will continue to shop here ...until they're no longer. Haven't fired it off yet, but will be using for practice on next camping trip. Thanks Bud's more

I purchased this gun for my personal protection. I had no issues with the way the gun performed. The gun is on the heavy side but fits my hand well & not much recoil. I put rubber tape on the grip for a better hold. My p...ersonal opinion is I really like this pistol and the best holster is a shoulder holster because of the weight. There was no problems with shipping. The gun came in good time. Thanks Buds Gun Shop. more

This is an awesome gun, I have alot of handguns and I saw a review on youtube about this gun and how shitty it was and thought ill order it and give it a try. So I spent the money received my gun and took it out to shot ...put about 150 rounds through it and did not have one jam. This in my opinion is a good gun, its heavy and accurate. Im a big guy so i like a big and heavy gun to each their own I guess LOL. I open carry this gun with me and keep it with me when I travel out of town. I really dont know why so many people give this gun a bad wrap. more

    Big ugly awesome gun
Guns are tools. There is no one perfect gun/caliper/tool. I have 4 hi points so far. These are great guns for keeping around the house, in each vehicle, in the shop etc. But they are quite heavy and too large for optimal... conceal carry. I qualified long ago for conceal carry with one with many people turning their noses up at it including the owner, now the shop is a hi-point dealer. I also like to use a hi-point c-9 to translation new shooters from a heritage single action 22. The no questions asked lifetime to whoever owns it warrenty was s top notch. Take it apart, put it in a bag and send it to the manufacturer and they put it back and give you an extra magazine for the trouble. Let people talk bad about it but a hi point available for you to use beats ANYTHING ELSE at home in the safe. more

This gun for the price is reasonable and after putting a few hundred rounds through it I've had no problems with the gun nor the magazine it came with and the other I had bought. I broke my magazines in before I used the... them, so out of the box cant say it won't jam. But overall it isn't bad and accuracy for the most part is fair ,I think it's relative to the shooter. more

I wanted to purchase a Hi-Point for some time and finally did when this bad boy went on sale for $118.00 + Free shipping. Seriously, $118.00 for a full-size .40 caliber firearm with a reputation for no-frills, good accur...acy, and solid reliability (per other reviews)? Plus, I actually like the look of the weapon. I pulled the trigger (pun intended). Short Version: I really like the Hi-Point JCP .40 S&W. It looks good, feels good, gets solid reviews for accuracy, has a reputation for reliability, and costs less than a good night out. You can't beat the value given the higher-end options available on this gun. It's inexpensive but not "cheap". Don't believe the nay-sayers. Give it a try and buy it! . NOTE: I haven't been to the range yet so here is my initial impression of the gun after un-boxing and checking it out. NOTE: This is a right hand fire only pistol. I don't see where the thumb safety can be changed for left hand operation. Gun PRO's: - It's a large gun that will fit big hands like mine very well. - Being a large and heavy gun (35 oz) you can defend yourself shooting or by bludgeoning an attacker to death. It's a formidable blunt-force instrument! - Trigger pull is much lighter (dry fired) than I anticipated. - Thumb safety is flush with the gun. Good for carrying the weapon as won't snag. - Stock grips ergonomics feel good in my hand (see cons for quality) - Mag release button easy to depress and drop a mag. - Proprietary key-lock system is functional and a cool option. - Stock mag extension makes the gun ideal very large to very large hands. - Stock sites are excellent. Rear adjustments available. Fixed front. - Heavy metal slide with deep groves should be great for actuating the slide and absorbing recoil from the blow-back. - Auto-lock open of the slide after the last round. - The finish of my weapon is very good! I was impressed. The flat black metal slide finish is consistent in color and texture with an appealing look. The polymer frame has a few rougher edges but also looks good. - The frame mounted barrel is solid and should assure consistent accuracy from the gun over time. The tip of my barrel came with a very minor nick in the finish out of the box. - There is a proprietary front rail under the muzzle for attaching a light or laser. Gun Cons's - It's BIG, Bulky, and Heavy (35 oz uloaded) which is a problem for some. These issue are well known. - Trigger guard opening is small and should be expanded a 1/4 inch. - Thumb safety is VERY small and difficult to actuate (but does hold well) - Stock grips are awful! Plastic. Very slippery even when dry. Replace them! - Take down is a pain. Once you get it, you got it, but it's not fun. Check out Youtube videos from others for help. - Mag release may be to far to reach for small hands. more

    Great Pistol
I cannot believe how accurate this gun is. Sure, it's heavy, ugly, and the red headed step child of the semi-automatic pistol world but it out performs any "cheap" semi-automatic in the $2-500 range. I hav...e never been more accurate with a pistol with the exception of a revolver. I have only ran cheap russian ammo through it and have noticed that steal jackets hang up in the feeding ramp. Everything else seems to run smoothly. However, I haven't run hollow points through it. I may need to file the feeding ramp smooth. I think I'm going to buy the 9mm next. I have dropped it in mud, had it out in the rain, had the powder coat scratch off on my tractor seat but there are no malfunctions. I have cleaned it but I wouldn't recommend doing it often as the roll pin is held by cheap kid toy grade plastic. I can only see taking it totally apart about 30 times before the "gun" portion will have to be replaced by the manufacturer and that will have to go through a dealer for service but it is a life time warranty. There is only one negative in my view and that is the magazine capacity. I am used to magazines with the capacity of 16 for that size of a pistol but considering the price, it's not that big of a deal. This is a great truck gun or a working on the ranch gun. If you scratch it up, who cares, it was cheap in the first place! more

The Good. It's a great value. It's extremely durable. Warranty and customer service of the company is excellent, and in the rare chance that it misfires, it's heavy enough to bludgeon someone to death. The Bad. The trig...ger pull is very heavy if I had to guess I would say close to 9lbs, It did not feel especially mushy, but somewhat gritty and not at all smooth. the trigger pull was so hard it affected my accuracy quite prominently and I found myself checking my safety multiple times, it was so hard. Secondly, The safety, it was very hard to secure engaged and because of a lack of any kind of real edge to catch your thumb on, you often had to use your fingernail to make that final push home, and it was uncomfortable to use, fortunately, disengaging was much easier but still it felt awkward and not smooth at all. Lastly The size of the grip, it's large, even my husband who is a large man said it felt large to him, they are also too smooth and the gun want's to twist somewhat when shooting especially if you have sweaty hands. Summary, It's purely a value priced gun, and it's better than no gun. Would I want to give this to my daughter to defend herself? Probably not, I'd rather spend $80 more and get a better quality weapon, Don't get me wrong, it has a purpose, it's probably a good gun to throw in the glovebox in a farm truck or a tacklebox, but this is not a collector's item and never will be. I did not care for the gun, it just did not feel good to shoot and was traded away for something else the first day after I shot 100 rounds through it. I debated keeping it and had heard that the trigger smooths out and softens up after 4-500 rounds, but that still wasn't going to fix the sticky safety and the feeling that I'm grabbing hold of a 4lb sledgehammer handle, and just my general lack of enthusiasm about shooting it that much, before it became a pleasure to shoot Perhaps I got a dud. I still have my HP C9 that I purchased and I like it much better than this one. so yes, I'm a HP fan, just not a JCP 40 fan. more

    Great tool box pistol
This pistol was recommended to me as being a tough, reliable weapon that could take a beating and still deliver. I bought one (can't beat the price for American made) and took it to the range right after. I put two ...boxes if generic ammo through it with no issues at all. Shoots straight and has adjustable rear sights. I did find the trigger is heavy and the shape is uncomfortable. Also, this thing weighs about 2 lbs. so if you run out of ammo, you can always beat them with it! All in all, for a home defense weapon that you can throw in the tool box and forget until you need it, this will fit the bill. I wouldn't recommend it for concealed carry, that's for sure. Inexpensive, American made and does the job. I have to recommend it. more

    A Brick
I've had one for a few years. It does what you'd expect from a sub-$200 handgun...it throws lead downrange...sometimes...good points are once the sight is dialed in, it's very accurate and consistent. Reco...il is negligible for the large caliber due to the heavy slide, which I found also tends to place the barrel right back on target after the minimal flip when fired. It's a fairly robust design, just hose it out with gun scrubber and oil it, and it will keep working. Bad points, It's not readily taken apart, and they encourage you not to. Involves removal of some roll pins that have to be driven out with appropriate size punch. Mine has issues with FTF the top two rounds from a fully stacked mag. The 8 after go through fine. I tried the recommended mag fine-tuning, and it didn't help. I bought another mag and it was the same, so I suspect the problem is in the gun itself. Noticed that they coated the feed ramp during build, thought that could be the problem. Removed the paint from it but still will only feed top 2 if the ramp is oiled prior to firing. Next mag is back to FTF as the oil is gone. They have good customer service, thought of sending it for repair but I don't feel like messing with it, so I just shoot 8 with it. They will send you FREE service parts for it, which is cool. I bought it as my first semi-auto to learn how they work, and really the defects drew me into learning how to work on it and understand operation, so I didn't mind. more

Purchased this rather heavy pistol took to range fired 200 rounds and it did what its suppose to do. I'm a Hi-Point fan and the JCP is no exception. It's tough, simple and accurate and it makes me smile. HOWEVER, I had to do some trigger work to clear some binding at the sear (trigger was almost unusable out of the box)..., and the mag takes awhile to break in. Bear in mind that a little TLC may be in order, and you won't be disappointed. Hi-Point customer service is second to none. Bud's great as always. more

    Cheap, Accurate, Reliable
If you are looking for a carry weapon, this is not the firearm for you. It's big, it's bulky, it's heavy, and it's ugly. I have owned this model for around 6 years now. It's very accurate and has... very little recoil and I have never had a jam, even with the cheapest ammo. My only real complaint is the fact that you can't break the gun down for a good cleaning. On the plus side, it has the best warranty in the business. (Lifetime, unconditional guarantee) more

The gun performed flawlessly. I initially loaded a clip and shot for testing accuracy. At about 25 yards without much pistol shooting experience I felt confident after the 3rd clip I could hit a target consistently with ...close groupings. The next couple clips I tried rapid firing to see if I could entice a misfire or jam and the gun consistently performed flawlessly. Granted I only have about 60 rounds give or take through... I used cheap ammo full metal jackets and it worked great. Extremely happy with the price and performance. Totally worth it if your looking for something to carry around the woods like myself incase of a run in with an animal or just for target practice. Extremely satisfied thus far. more

I've had this gun for about 2 years now and I would say you deffinately get what you pay for when it comes to this pistol. The first time I took it to the range is what proved that. I took 100 rounds to shoot and it jamm...ed up on me 3 times. And it seems like Everytime I go out it jams at least once. The quality of this pistol isn't all that great either. It is very heavy mainly In the top part and the grip is made out of cheap plastic. This pistol is only something you want to get if you do not have the money for anything else. Even though it has it's flaws. It's better than not having anything at all. more

Only took about a week from the time I ordered for it to arrive and I live on the west coast. The gun is pretty top heavy but its not bad at all, it helps a lot with the recoil. My 5 ft. 120 lb. wife had no problem shoot...ing it. I think I would have to say the first 15 out of 20 rounds jammed. It was getting really annoying until i looked at the mag and noticed right where the nose of the bullet was supposed to feed into the chamber there was a little plastic piece that was flat. (i was using flat nose ammo so it kept it from loading at an angle into the chamber and caused it to jam). So all i did was take out the knife in my pocket and shave the plastic down at a nice angle giving the bullet a smooth inclined surface to load into the chamber with. Out of the last 30 rounds in the box not a single one jammed after that. All in all I am very happy with this pistol. Its very solid and well built. Just kind of wish they would re-design the mag to work a bit better and not look so funny sticking out of the bottom. But hey for the price and the complaints for the most part being cosmetic i would recommend this gun to anybody looking to have some fun. more

This is my fifth Hi Point pistol and haven't had any problems with any of them. Accurate, well built (heavy) and cheaper than most any other gun out there. If you're looking to shoot at 50 yards, this can do it, but only... provided you're a really good shot (I happen to practice at that range). If you aren't a good shot, at 25 yards you'll feel like one with this weapon. Of the 5 Hi Points I have only one time did I have a failure to feed, and that was with a reload. Use good ammo and take your time aiming on the range - this is a very good handgun and the price is right! more

I am very pleased with my .40 from Hi-Point. This weapon is very reliable and durable. The first time firing this weapon, I put 39 rounds through it and at the 40th load in, the weapon mis-fed the last round. I put 2 mor...e 10 round clips through it thereafter and continued to run into the same problem on the last round of both clips. After cleaning my weapon, I did not run into the problem again. Considering it is a new weapon, I will update of how the performance with the weapon is after I've put a couple hundred rounds through it. Thanks for this great firearm Hi-Point!!!! more

Buds rocks as usual. No issues with ordering and delivery. As has been stated before, this is a heavy gun. It is very clunky but it shoots just fine. If you are in the market to add a cheap truck gun then this is not a b...ad option. It is not pretty, but it will go bang every time. When compared to other brands, this is about 40{34bae5d97fd345fbd2efa2b7ce884f0f280a424cf224d0d8ebe8b5226f699451} larger and the same ratio in weight. For the price, try it yourself and you will see. Got the gun the other day shipping was good. Great service by Buds. Ignored any skeptics and bought this gun and I dont regret it one bit . When I first saw it yeah its a large gun but no one said its a compact its heavy... but make the thing crazy accurate i think cause it positions right back where you were aiming. I have shot the glock 23 and its not close to the accuracy. The gun fits perfect in my shoulder holster and the operation of the weapon is great. For $160 its a steal I love the gun, why pay $200 more another gun that does the exact thing. Great gun would recommend it to anyone, love the red and yellow sights, much better than the 1911 white sights. Just be cautious if you have small hands if so the 9mm fits in hand beautifully! more

This gun shot extremely well right out of the box. I would definantly recommend this gun to any first time buyers out there on the fence. Hi-points are actually a very reliable weapon (they also look way better in your h...and than on the website). gun snobs will tell you that they suck, theyre heavy and theyre ugly. Well they are heavy, about 2 lbs, but this has some pros, the biggest being the weight of the gun actually reduces recoil signifcantly. A 14 year old girl could shoot this gun and be accurate as hell! I love this gun and will be back to buy the 9 mm soon for my CCW. more

You will not get a better pistol for the money. This Hi-Point is just as reliable and more accurate than my Glock; which cost nearly $400 more. Now, if your making your decision based on appearance, then this Hi-Point is... not for you. This thing is built like a tank: big, heavy and ugly. If your looking for an accurate, affordable and relaible piece, then stop thinking and buy this gun. Out of the box it was all over a 6x6 target at 40yds, which is where I typically test a rifle from. I was also shooting cheap TulAmmo, which my Glock hates, but this Hi-Point cycled right through 30 rds. with no problems. Also, Buds was great as usual. more

Out of the box , I hated this gun. It was heavy, clumsy and it felt 'plasticky'.. I stopped at the local Wal Mart on the way home and picked up a box of Tula 40 S&W ammo for 12 bucks.. I loaded the mag, hating this gun. ...cycled a round pulled the trigger and thought' it wasn't so bad', shot that box of Ammo , went back for another thinking ' this gun is great'. very accurate, heavy enough to steady us old codgers, and goes bang without incident every time I pull the trigger. I wouldn't want to carry it, but for the nightstand or in my truck, or at hte range it is fine! Yes, it is very reliable. I have 150 rounds of cheap ammo through it without a single problem. i have hit the lid from a spray paint can every time in my back yard at 25 yards . As for Buds. On a fixed income, I put this on layaway. After i made the last payment, the Pistol arrived at my local FFL three days later. couldn't be happier. Buds was perfect as usual, I have bought 2 different orders and a total of 4 firearms and all arrived as described. As for the Hi-point it is what it is, a cheap gun that performs well for it's price! It's no Ruger, sig o...r Kimber but if you use decent ammo and polish the feed ramp it is reliable and accurate with minimal recoil due to the weight! Like Boris the Blade says "Heavy is Good!! What can I say.... a .40 S&W for 160 bucks. It's big, it's heavy but that is not a bad thing. The weight reduces recoil to that of my 380. No it's not a concealed carry gun. It's a 3 AM intruder in your home gun. It's a ...protect your family and property during civil unrest gun. As for reliability. I sent 2 full mags downrange without a single jam or misfire. Using quality LE ammo. Only issue is ONE MAG. because of that I am giving it 4 out of 5 stars As for BUDS as usual they are great. WIll be back for my 12Ga and my BFR .500 Magnum more

First purchase from Bud's was this HiPoint 40cal out of the box i discovered its too heavy you could make a full humvee out of its weight is steel. my second problem is i carried this gun on duty for my private security ...job and my first night on the job on the first day with this gun I came under fire from an armed intruder and it double fed 2 bullets into the chamber and almost cost me my life i have a wife and a baby on the way and they almost lost me due to this gun thank god for partners he saved my life. I took it to the range 4 days later to test it in a non combat situation and it double fed 20 times in the process of 10 magazines but it is very accurate when it doesn't jam or mess up. Firstly, Buds was great. Secondly and on topic, the "Hi-Point JCP .40 Smith & Wesson" is a great pistol. Cost, excellent. Accuracy, excellent (Targets where 35yards to 50yards). Surplus Ammo, No problems (350rnds of Tul...a). Weight vs. Recoil, beautiful match (I'll leave the compact pistols for my wife and daughters). Accessories, the "ghost ring" is ok. If the "ghost ring" was of a more solid material I would rate it better. So the "ghost ring" is just that, an accessory and not a major part to the pistol. more

Gun is great and love shooting it. 300 rounds of cheap ammo from Wal-Mart and hollowpoints with no problems. Did sand the magazines edges down and no feed or jams. Gun is stiff when new, but after 100 rounds it starts to... loosen up. Mags get better with each loading and I let them set full for several days at a time. Gun is for home security and I feel comfortable about depending on it. Learn to use your gun even if it is inexpensive. more

POS. Jams first and second round. OK until last round, which jams. I purchased 3 additional factory mags which produced the same results. If you search the net you will see this is a common problem with Hi Point guns. Th...eir mags are garbage... Spend a few bucks more and get a quality firearm. I wish I would have. I contacted Buds about this and they pretty much told me to F off. Never buying from Bud's again. They don't stand behind what they sell. They know this product is S***, but they continue to sell it. nuf said. RESPONSE BY BUDS: We sell a significant amount of Hi-Point firearms and the majority of customer reviews are 4 or 5 star. We would never knowingly sell defective firearms, but with the volume we do there will occasionally be problems with any manufacturer. You pay for a warranty when you get a new firearm, Hi-Point will take care of any problems. more

good for the price. I bought this gun as a wedding gift for my friend and have had the chance numerous times to shoot it. Here is what i have found; This gun is surprisingly accurate, more so than my springfield 5" BBL X...D40 tactical was. actually a lot more accurate. This gun is heavy. it is a tank. the finish is not refined, but for the price you cant expect much. it seems very solid, BIG and I can't imagine it ever breaking. The trigger pull is monstrous. Compared to a glock, springfield or even any double action revolver I have ever shot, this has the heaviest trigger pull. The magazine release is also very heavy. you really have to mean it when you operate this gun. For the price you really can't do any better. you might get lucky buying something used, but not likely. at about a third or even less the cost of the competition, this is a winner. more

I just came back from the range with this gun that I just received from Bud's. It was loose in my medium to large glove-size hands and it seemed uncontrollable as it is HEAVY! I wrapped the grip with a rubbery grip wrap ...for a bow and what a difference. This shoots extremely well for $160! I will keep it in the truck locked and loaded for when needed. The only failures I had in 200 rounds were mag related where the round was driven into the front of the mag rather than feeding properly about every third mag. I had seen another post about this and was not surprised and will find a fix. Also I could not force a 10th round into the mags with my Maglula loader. I think this is a good deal and only wish that the version with the hard case for $11 less had been available when I ordered this. Bud's gave a great delivery on this order. more

Picked it up from my FFL holder on Thursday, and it was on the range on Saturday These are the first 5 rounds out of the gun at 20', standing/no elbow rest: http://www.midiwall.com/bang/pics/20090419_Ugly_BANG.jpg Simple... review: It goes BANG! when you pull the trigger; it's heavy (39oz unloaded); it's unbalanced (nose heavy because of it's length); it's generally impossible to field strip (you need a drift pin); you would NEVER carry it; the magazine has an interesting loading quirk; the sight paint is cheap... But look again at the target pic right outta the box. I bought this as a HD weapon that will make a good sized hole where I point it, and I won't be sad to lose it to a police investigation. I'm VERY happy. more

I bought a 40 cal, used, at a gun show in November initially because of price ($150) , lifetime no-questions-asked-regardless-of-the-number-of-owners Warranty and the comfort fit in my large hand. Great balance and wonde...rful acquisition of the sight picture also helped my decision to buy. I shot one-hand, off-hand, 5 rounds of FMJ and 5 rounds of JHP on my range and at the self-defense distance of 7 yards, & put 10 rounds in a 2-1/4" group. None of my other high-priced guns can match this accuracy. Not too bad for a 73 year-old with mediocre eyesight and a shaky arm.. I do a lot of match shooting with Rugers, Taurus', Uberti's, Pietta's and Rossi's and this gun is equal in quality, simplicity and comfort to any of them & a better guarantee. So, just because they are inexpensive (not cheap) do hesitate to buy one. A lot of gun buyers go by price, the more expensive has to be better. Well, think about it...no Cadillac can equal a Toyota so that cost logic is not a valid one. Buy for "bang for the buck" and you will include HiPoint in your final selection group. Go to your gun shop and handle one....if you can find them as they are selling like hotcakes. I own 4 and soon five hipoints the .380 .45 .9mm and the 9mm carbine just purchased the 40 s&w and have had one prob...lem and that's the break in process the gun jams time to time but after putting over 500 rounds through each one they all work great. the first time I pulled the triger on my 9mm it was a shock to me and had a better grouping than my karh p9 the first time out of the box. Nice cheap gun more
