The Jarmann M1884 was a bolt action repeating rifle invented by Jacob Smith Jarmann, a Norwegian firearms designer. The Jarmann M1884 was adopted by the Norwegian Army in 1884. As a repeating rifle with a tubular magazine under the barrel that holds 8 black powder 10.15 x 61mm R rounds, the Jarmann M1884 was a major improvement of the earlier Jarmann that was demanded by a joint Norwegian-Swedish rifle commission. It could still be fired as a single shot or as a repeating rifle, just by selecting it with the fire selector. The Jarmann M1884 with a 10.15 x 61mm R black powder round had a muzzle velocity of 485 to 500 m/s (1,191 to 1,640 ft/s) with an effective range of 2,400 m (2,600 yd) and it was a very accurate rifle for its time. The Jarmann M1884 was a standard rifle for the Norwegian Army for only 10 years then it was replaced by the superior Krag-Jorgensen rifle. The Jarmann M1884 was manufactured by Kongsberg Vapenfabrikk in Norway or by Carl Gustafs Stads Gevärsfaktori in Sweden. In total, over 30,000 of them were made in Norway and 1,500 in Sweden. The first 500 made in Sweden were two-band, as are all of the Norwegian. The last 1,000 Swedish rifles were three-band.
