General Motors M3A1 Grease Gun Features

The M3 Grease Gun is a direct-blowback operated full-auto-only .45 caliber submachine gun that was developed in WWII to to be easily, quickly and cheaply made.  Its intended role was to replace the incredibly heavy and expensive Thompson M1A1 with a gun that could be made in a matter of hours for about 10% of the cost.  The M3 was built with an 8 inch barrel and a collapsing stock.

General Motors M3A1 Grease Gun Capacity

The M3 Grease Gun is chambered in .45 ACP, the caliber of the patron saint of shooting stuff, John Moses Browning.  The M3 is fed from stamped, double-stack, single-feed detachable box magazines with capacities somewhere between 30 and 32 rounds with the uncertainty being due to the lack of quality control in the magazines’ construction.
With an unloaded weight of 8.15 pounds and an overall length of 29.1 inches (or as little as 21.9 inches) the M3 grease gun is 30% shorter and 3 pounds lighter than the Thompson.  With its slower fire rate, both overall handling and mobility far exceed that of the Thompson.  While its fixed, non-adjustable sights reduce its accuracy, its controllability is superior allowing more accurate fire.

General Motors M3A1 Grease Gun Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The M3 has a large and well-shielded magazine release button on the left side of the magazine well, a lever-style charging handle on the right side, and a trigger.  That’s all of the controls.  The safety is actually incorporated into the dust cover and locks the bolt in either the forward or rearward position and prevents it from moving.  The magazine well actually offers a proper grip area and the wire stock offers a flimsy and unstable feel.

General Motors M3A1 Grease Gun Fit & Finish

The M3 Grease Gun, aside from its bolt and barrel, is made entirely of stamped steel sheets that are parkerized and assembled and tossed out of an airplane for resistance fighters and paratroopers.  The M3 was re-designed to be even cheaper with an A1 model removing the charging handle.
