    Great first shotgun
This has been a great first shotgun. Being new to shotguns, I was at first skeptical to buying a cheaper pump shotgun. However, now I realize that I was clearly wrong and this firearm was well worth the money. I've ...fired many rounds through this thing and it has definitely earned my confidence as well as improved my shooting. Pros: -Fired over 600 rounds without any failures (birdshot, buckshot, and slugs) -The price is very right :) -Synthetic stock is actually comfortable, even when firing slugs -Rather lightweight -has very visible bead sights -more attractive than my significant other. -can put a sling on it -comes with a choke/is interchangeable -highly customizable (parts interchangeable with the 500) Cons (but don't let them scare you off): -You can't customize the forend easily (stock's easy to change though) -cheaper paint job but holds up well -no rails for scopes or sights -plastic trigger guard -it is a smooth bore (does not bother me though) more

    Good value gun
Good value shotgun. Cycled several rounds through it. Had a little issue with the magazine taking rounds at first but a couple of light taps on the plunger and it freed up and took rounds and cycled them just fine. So fa...r, so good. more

    Great gun at great price!!
If you want a good gun at great price then look no further! I have owned Remington 1100s, Browning A5s all good guns but this Maverick 88 has surprised me. Especially for price you can buy 7 for price of one A5. Lol. I a...bsolutely love this gun! more

    Excellent Inexpensive Shotgun
I bought this about 6 months ago and have fired several hundred slugs through it. I have not had any issues. The only challenge with this gun is making sure the extractor pieces stay in while reassembling. Once you get t...hat down, it is easy to take down, clean and put back together. Can't beat the price. more

    True value
Don't let the price steer you away. This is a good shotgun. I fired some birdshot and slugs through it. I hit 2 in the same hole at 50 yards with the slugs. I plan on hunting birds, deer, and hogs with this gun. Sho...tguns are so versatile and fun! For 200 bucks, it's a steal. more

    Outstanding value
Purchased this gun today after much research. Shot 50 rounds as soon as I got home of mixed loads - light target to heavy buck. All loaded, chambered, fired and ejected without issue. Gun shot very accurately. As for rec...oil, any 12ga. will recoil. Load, grip and stance all play a part. This gun, held properly recoiled with minimum discomfort. The factory recoil pad works very well, don't think I will need to replace it. Highly recommend this shotgun! PS: Academy in Easley, SC was outstanding! more

    Mossberg 88 = Mossberg 500 -frills
The Maverick 88 is a toned down version of the venerable Mossberg 500. It has a slightly different receiver with a cross bar trigger safety instead of the 500's top receiver safety. Very similar to a Remington 870 s...afety. The 88 will accept any Mossberg 500 barrels and chokes. Major difference other than the safety location is of course the furniture, the 88 is. Fully synthetic stock and forearm with a decent if not pretty finish. The 500 can be had with either wood laminate or synthetic. The same aftermarket stocks that fit the 500 will fit the 88, at least the ones I have tried. This is an ideal first shotgun or for use as a wet weapon such as duck hunting at a very low cost. I have thrown over 1000 shells thru mine, everything from light target loads for skeet to slugs and with the exception of the minishells it swallows them all even high brass. The only issue I had was when I received it the action was slick, a good cleaning and hit with some emery cloth to polish, oiled and it has run like a champ since.. the only complaint if you want to call it that is my local store had a problem keeping them in stock long enough for me to get one. Had to wait a while, but worth the wait $ to value I would find it hard to beat. more

    Great For Turkey.
This gun is one of the greatest guns for the low price. I use it for turkey, skeet, and does. Just recently I killed a turkey at 55 yards. I'm 14 and it's not a heavy gun at all. Very good gun for a great price..., I highly recommend it. more

    Best bang for your buck!
Bought all-purpose model w/ 24" vented barrel to do some clay shooting. Purchased 18.5" security model barrel for $60. Total for all w/ tax $250. Out of the box its tight & jerky - break it down & clean.../ oil it... Bingo - smooth as silk! Nice shot gun - but I'm a little concerned w/ its field durability. more

    Good gun
First shotgun I've owned but not the first I've used. The price is great. Gun is sturdy, aside from the pump handle, which isn't flimsy or faulty in anyway, but is plastic and feels a little cheap compared... to the rest of the gun. Operated perfectly on a dove hunt last week, no problems, smooth action. For the money you can't beat it, I am pleased and would get another or recommend to someone if they were looking for a gun that was good and wouldn't break the bank. more

    Won't rotate shells
Bought a month ago started out dropping shells from the bottom when cycle while shooting skeet then was fine. Booked a dove hunt, then when practicing before hunt shells wouldn't hardly cycle would throw out shells ...but not load no mater how hard I pumped. The Best
I'm a senior citizen and wanted to up the ante a tad with home defense and use while fishing on my boat. This is one very very sweet addition which covers my purposes in spades. Few things in life are as distinguish...able, yet pleasing, as hearing a pump chamber a round. No matter where you read reviews this is the #1 ranked shotgun for the stated purpose as well as other uses. Mine has the 18 1/2" barrel. It looks good, feels good, balance is great and is just a special gun for the price. Enjoy! more

This is a very well made shotgun. While it is certainly on the cheaper end, it's still made by Mossberg. They don't make junk guns. It does exactly what it is supposed to do.

    Great Shotgun
I received this shotgun for Christmas of 2014. Since I've owned the weapon, I've gone trap shooting numerous times and have put more shells through the gun than I could imagine. My father told me the gun was in...expensive, probably wouldn't shoot as well as I wanted it to, and it was just a gun for a starting shooter. This gun is just as accurate as any, and I would recommend for any kind of shooting or hunting, as I have done both. Very lightweight and easy to manage, very comfortable, and I have not had any kind of problem with this shotgun in over a year. more

Cannot go wrong with this shotgun
First gun I bought. I wanted a home defense shotgun that was simple, inexpensive, and super reliable. Now after having it for a year it's still works/looks like the day I bought it. I have shot this gun several time...s at the range and have probably put at least 100 rounds of buckshot/birdshot without any malfunction. I added a light and low light sites just to make sure my wife could use it with ease. Overall I have nothing but praise to say for this gun. Worth the wait
I'm knew i wanted to buy my first gun and because i'm not 21 yet i couldn't get a han gun but that still left me with a bunch to choose from. I finally realized i wanted a shotgun to be my first gun and af...ter hearing this one come up in multiple youtube videos i started to do my research. After rarely reading any bad reviews and realizing how much i can customize it if i want to i just had to have it. So I waited till i got back home from college to make this purchase (felt like forever) and it was completely worth the wait. I can honestly say I've only had one jam in it since i bought it and that was the day of (after cleaning and lubricating of course). Its easy to disassemble and one thing i noticed that i didn't read on any reviews was the cushion pad on the stock. It's pretty good quality and really does help, It shoots beautifully and if i had to do it again I would in a heart beat. more

    Great for the Price!
I was looking for a Remington 870, but decided on this. I cleaned it completely before taking it out. It is great for trap shooting with #8 shot. I later bought an 18.5" barrel for HD, using 000 buck. Lays out a gre...at pattern at 25yds with either barrel. The only downside is the recoil is a bit unforgiving with larger shot, but I've never had a FTF or misfire! more

    Best Bang for the Buck!
Just bought one 11/19/2014. Very happy with it. Mossberg 500 accessories will fit, barrels, chokes and stocks. I was not very happy with the Modified Choke that it came with, the pattern was terrible at 15 yards with 7-1.../2 Target. Bought a RedHead Extra Full Choke and now it is good to 25 yards with Federal #4 shot Heavy Field Load AND my Federal 7-1/2 shot Target. 80% in a 12" circle. Spreads a bit more at 30 yards. The Modified Choke is OK for 00 Buck up to 20 yards. Will be doing some Turkey Hunting in a couple years with it, once I can get my Lifetime Hunting License in South Carolina next year. more

    GREAT GUN
Beginner or veterans shooters alike will do great with this gun. It's great for a kid on a budget who wants to start shooting and it's great for a parent who wants to bring their child into the world of guns. I...'ve put over 3000 shells through my Maverick and haven't had an issue yet. First time learning how to disassemble and reassemble with no previous experience was quite the job,but after a couple times it is a breeze. Plus it makes other shotguns a breeze once you've got this thing figured out. 5 STARS on this little beauty. I've had mine for 6 years now and am just now thinking about buying something else just to switch it up. Seems like a waste of money knowing that I've got a 100% reliable gun for whatever I need already. more

    Great Gun-at any price!!!
I bought a Maverick about 20 years ago for $125 and I am so glad I did! I have several other shotguns that cost a whole lot more, but the Maverick is still my go to gun. It is still reliable today as it was 20 years ago.... If you need a shotgun and you are on a budget- buy one -you will be glad you did. I have put mine up against a lot of guns that cost a whole lot more and it will hang with any of them. Shots just as well and just as reliable. more

Great gun. Only issue is the forearm broke after continued use. Mossberg replaced the forearm for free, though, even after the warranty was up.

    Best bang for your buck!
When I was looking for a shotgun, I didn't want to pay an arm and a leg for something that would do the same job as any other shotgun. So when I saw this one, I knew it was for me. I'll admit, when i bought it,... I was a little skeptical of the quality. But let me tell you, the first time I shot that shotgun, all doubts were blasted out of existence. So far, I've put over 90 rounds through it and it still looks and acts like new. When i go skeet shooting, i can hit 9 out of 10 clay pigeons. But that's not the fault of the shotgun! It is very accurate and the pre- installed choke keeps the string of birdshot/ buckshot very tight. If you want a great quality shotgun but don't want to go into financial trouble, this is the best shotgun you can buy for the price. I highly recommend this gun to anyone. more

    Surprisingly Good
I bought 2 of the Maverick 88s in 12 ga for Christmas 2012 for my son and daughter. They wanted their own skeet guns instead of using my Rem 1100. The price was right on par for what I considered at the time to be a star...ter gun, but I find myself using the Maverick more than any of my other shotguns. There has been only one hung shell (counting both guns) in the 500-700 shells that have been fed through each of these guns. It shoots 2 3/4" and 3" shells equally well and the included (replaceable) choke tube is great for skeet shooting. The butt pad dampens recoil well to let you shoot all day. This gun has some weight to it, but it is not too much for younger shooters to handle. My daughter is a petite 5'4" and she has no issues shooting the Maverick. The stock holds up well to scratches and dings and after a year and a half, they both still look new. Although they are cleaned regularly, the blueing is holding up well. Take-down is fast and easy and all of the parts that require lube are within easy reach. All in all, this is a great shotgun. Buy one...you won't be disappointed. more

Perfect Shotgun for anything you need
I got this after my Yildiz S51P blew up in my face(don't buy that thing, it's a death trap). I've taken it to the range a few times and did clay target shooting by both launching and stationary and it is v...ery accurate. Shot bird shot and slugs fine, I've a couple of shells get stuck in there while ejecting but that's just cheap ammo. The Mossberg 500 barrel is compatible with this as is the stocks. Another Mossberg masterpiece and you can't beat the price. It might not be a 500 but it is very close.  more

this is a fantastic some shotgun
I have several shotguns. Remingtons, browning, etc. Pumps, over/under, automatic, side by side. Saw this shotgun on website and checked it out next time I was by academy. Bought it for duck hunting because cheap and comp...osite stock. I shot 4 shot, 7 shot and slugs out of it. Duck hunting, dove hunting, deer hunting, sporting clays. Fun gun, consistant, dont worry about rain, sleet, mud, brush. I love the way it feels. Other guns kick harder to me. Some do some dont. When I hunt it's the gun I reach for. Never missfired one time. Cheaper ammo hard to eject. Medium grade ammo is no problem. That is the only problem I have had. Have shot 3 inch mags with no problem. I abuse this gun. Takes a licking and keeps on ticking. Had several people shoot this gun and when I tell them what I paid, they go get one too. Just put a sling on mine. Trust me, best shotgun for the price ever. Don't how mossburg did it. more

    Excellence for price
Have this weapon now for 2 months, and take her out shooting once a week at the range. I love the 28 inch barrel for accuracy and the simple mean and nasty intimidation factor of the long gun. I've fired no. 8 shot,... 00 buckshot and slugs from Gladys (I christened her). At 50 yards the slugs were still effective on a splatter target. I've shot water jugs, hard boxes and even a 55 gallon drum. The 12 gauge slugs are actually .72 caliber, at 1625 ft per second travel. Did some serious damage. Being retired military, I appreciate this gun very much, to where you don't really need a rifle when you fire rifled slugs through it. Plus, you can use it in emergency combat if you tuck the stock under arm and fire low using 00 buckshot. However, I do have a pad I wear on my shoulder while firing 00 and slugs..........she will kick your shoulder off!!! more

    Mossberg Maverick 88
I already have a mossberg 500a and it has served me for years, I have all the tactical stuff on it so it's not easy to change barrels w/o messing with all the junk on the gun. Wanted to be better at skeet shooting a...nd priced a 28" barrel out at $165. Went into Academy and walked out with a 88 with 28" barrel for $189! It doesn't feel quite as solid on the fore grips but it works. This thing fires everytime it's asked to, no FTF or FTE. I have been using Federal target shells. This would be a great only shotgun, barrels switched out in minutes. If you wanted to you can trick it out with some off the after market stuff. This is the best $189 I have ever spent on a gun, just paid $219 for a trigger for my AR! more

    Great Shotgun!!!
I absolutely love my Maverick!!! This gun has taken everything I could throw at it. It shoots everything I've loaded it with and feeds perfect. After over 300+ rds of ammo this gun just keeps shooting! No jams, no m...isfeeds, no misfires. Extremely easy to modify. I have mounted a green dot scope( no longer on the gun, went with glo sights), added a gun sling and a thumbhole stock is in the my next and final addition. My only complaint would be that the receiver isn't tapped and drilled which would've made the scope mount easier but that's a quick fix. And for the price this gun is exceptional!!! A great shotgun!!! more

    great shotgun
Whats not to like? Great price, made in Texas, works flawlessly, loves all types of ammo. I bought it for home defense and put an 18" barrel and Knoxx-shock stock. It is an awesome gun to shoot, low recoil, . I'...;ve put probably 500rds. through it using 2 3/4", 3", birdshot, buckshot, slugs, whatever I had and never had any problems with jamming FTF, FTE or anything. A friend of mine has the 500 and you can barely tell them apart. The only thing is that you cannot change the foregrip. I love this shotgun, best purchase I've made. more

This shotgun is one of my favorite out of the three I have. The Maverick 88 12 gauge is the first firearm I have purchase brand new. I normally purchase used firearms; Because they are cheaper. So on to the shotgun it...39;s self. After putting a 150+ rounds through it in three hours I only had few problems. But it wasn't the Mavericks fault! I was shooting clay's. The kick wasn't bad if you are used to shooting a 12 gauge. With having the firearm hot the federal shells I was using wouldn't fire. You'd hear the click as if your dry fired with a live round in the chamber. You could ejected the round and rack another and it would fire just fine. I say it was just firearm being hot and ammo I was using. Not a manufacture failure at all. I'd buy another if I didn't already two other rifles on my list to purchase. more

    Excellent Value and VERY Reliable
The Mossberg Maverick 88, made in Eagle Pass, Texas, is an excellent value for many reasons. First is it's attractive price. Second is the fact that, simply stated, it's just so darn reliable. Anyone who compla...ins that the action sticks, or the shells fail to eject, is one that does not know how to properly clean the Maverick. The instructions for breakdown may be difficult to understand for those not familiar with the terminology, but for the experienced shotgunner, the breakdown procedure could not be easier. I clean my Maverick after each use, taking about one hour to do so thoroughly. It has not failed me one single time. As to the price, it is very affordable when compared to other manufacturers. And good news! If it is scratched, dinged, muddied, or otherwise put to the test, I've not scratched, dinged or muddied a $2,000 shotgun! I am definitely sold on the Mossberg brand, and have purchased a Mossberg 500A since buying the Maverick 88. I highly recommend this shotgun, and also love the fact that the Mossberg line is made in the USA! more

    The 88
I have shot nearly a 1000 rounds through this gun with no failures. The great thing about this shotgun is that you can customize it nearly any way you want to for not a lot of money. Duck Gun Galore
When I first handled this gun it looked and felt very cheaply made. I heard it was a reliable gun so I threw my caution to the wind and gambled with the cheaper(est) option. I mainly hunt the harsh saltwater bays. Bracki...sh water is as close as I get to freshwater duck hunting. I average about 3 hunts a week during the season. I treat the gun like a duck gun and at this point it's about the most unaesthetically pleasing shotgun you'll ever lay your eyes on due to the ridiculous amount of rust on the barrel and mud on the stock. But functionally it is an EXTREMELY dependable shotgun. I've had the gun rained on for hours, covered with mud and saltwater, pulled twigs out of the chamber, and anything else you can imagine on a weekly basis. It still performs flawlessly. I clean it MAYBE two to three times a week during the season which only includes a quick wipe with oil and pumping oil through the chamber. I bought a brand new semi-auto for this season and have only taken it out once. I can't stop using the ol'mav. Can't beat a gun that takes a beating and still performs. more

    Present to myself
Action is smooth and did not fill the recoil when I fired it. I think my AR-15 had more recoil. Very easy to handle and assemble. Have to break it down because it is too big for my bag. I was so amazed with the action th...at I did not even look at the paper target to see if I hit it. This is the second 12 gauge that I have owned and I love it. Even spoke with a co-worker that owns one and he is in love with his. Definitely more bang for the buck. more

    Great entry-level shotgun
Easy for a beginner to become accurate with this shotgun; pattern remains consistent with whatever lead shells I've used (generally whatever's on sale). Just a warning, the barrel quickly gets hot during trap s...hooting. Few parts to worry about & virtually no small parts makes it very easy to clean - just need some spray solvent and just about any cheap shotgun cleaning kit. Only thing I don't care for is the cheapy molded plastic. It's certainly not pretty, but I will say that it takes the elements and a fair amount of abuse pretty well and I guess for the price, one can't really complain. Only other thing to add is that occasionally the action will lock up and will take a few back and forths to unstick it. Could be the ammo, but I did notice that it took awhile for the action to become smoother and lose it's jerkiness. Despite those minor imperfections, it's still a great bargain and definately worth the price. more

    True bang for your buck
I purchased a Maverick 88 12 gauge field model. I've got several much higher priced guns from other manufacturers including Mossberg. When it comes down to it can I say that they do a better job than the Maverick 88... where it counts? Nope. You put shells in it, you cycle the action, it goes bang, and lots of lead goes downrange. Where the rubber meets the road, it is just as good as any other pump gun I've ever owned. Will it be 5, 10, or 20 years from now? I don't know. But for $160, it makes an exceptional gun to throw on the 4-wheeler without caring about mud or scratches. For $75 I picked up an 18.5" cylinder bore for home defense and turned it into a murderous chainsaw inside 50 feet. It shucks through shells without a hiccup. If there were a negative, it'd have to be that it kicks like a mule with anything stronger than light field loads. Its light weight is the culprit. I can't say that it kicks any more though than the 835 Ultimag I used to have when firing the same shells. Does it kick harder than a much heavier 870 Wingmaster? Yes. Does it kick harder than a gas operated Beretta? Definitely. Did it cost $600 or $1000? Heck no and I wouldn't shed a tear if I banged it into something or scratched the stock on a barbed wire fence either. Its a rare gem in the value department. more

    Superb Shotgun
Do not let the price fool you on this gun, it is a great performing scatter gun. It has an Awesome feel to it and the recoil is very mild. Cleaning is very easy as well. This shotgun is surprisingly accurate with slugs t...oo. The action is crisp and easy to use. The only thing I do not like about this gun are the bead sights. There are 2, one in the middle of the barrel that is white and a gold one on the end. The white one in the middle is off center with the other bead so it makes it hard to aim. I wish the white bead was not there at all. But, other than that this is a nice all around shotgun for a superb price. Just keep her clean and oiled up good and she will make you happy. more
