    Not everything i expected
I purchased this shotgun about a month and a half ago and have not been able to use it. I couldn't load shells into the magazine because the spring or the follower was stuck. I ended up cutting myself trying to push... the spring in the magazine to load shells---to no avail. I returned the gun to Academy to have them ship it out for repair, but I didn't notice that the manager that sent it out gave a very VAGUE description of the problem. Needless to say, Mossberg shipped the gun back to Academy without repairing the problem. I did NOT expect to be having these issues with this gun. Maybe it's not common, but it happened! more

    Good shotgun for the money.
Shot a few boxes out of it and so far so good. Nice and lightweight, and with that the recoil is up there but nonetheless the Maverick 88 is a versatile tool.

    Love my 88
I bought this a few months ago and took it to the range. It shoots nice and kicks hard. I purchased a stock, fiber optic bead sight, a sling, and a heat shield for about $65. It feels very nice and I am sure felt recoil ...will be less and control will be better. Overall a good inexpensive home protection option that is easy to find accessories for. more

I added the 6 position stock and fore arm grip, this will greatly reduce kick, I shot 3” triple 00 Buck off my shoulder with these add-ons, still kicks, but not as bad- I love it

Great Value, Solid Gun for Home Defense
I had never shot a 12 gauge and was a little nervous, not knowing if I would enjoy shooting it. I purchased it on sale for $179 about a month ago and finally had a chance to take it to the range a couple of days ago. I r...an 35 clay target shells (1250 fps) through without a hitch. The recoil wasn't bad at first but after the 34th shot, my shoulder started getting sore. I shot one more and the soreness was still there so I called it a day. This gun was very accurate from several different distances. It now resides next to my bed where I hope I never have to use it. But it's nice to know it's there and will do the job, if needed. more

Best Bang for your Buck (pun intended)
I had been looking for a good home defense/varmint gun; something with decent quality, functionality, but nothing too fancy or expensive. My dad's 70's model Ithaca semi-auto 12 gauge is a great gun, but just t...oo pretty for frequent use and has too much barrel for home defense gun. I knew I wanted the pump action and a shorter barrel. I was shopping at Academy in Waco, TX. when I saw the Mossberg line. The Mossberg 590A1 Mariner is an awesome weapon, but a bit on the spendy side for what I'll use it for. The Mossberg Maverick 88 Security with 18.5" barrel on sale for $179, on the other hand, was a tremendous find! What you see is what you get; simple, clean, easy to maintain. I took out the plug so I can get 5+1 in the mag. I've put a dozen or so shells through it so far. It's fun to shoot. Recoil (shooting relatively light game loads) is what you'd expect from a shotgun, but it isn't overwhelming. It seems louder than dad's Ithaca, maybe due to the shorter barrel? It might be a good idea to start using earplugs... Since the Maverick 88 is a bare bones gun, I did purchase some add ons: sling swivels, a mounting bracket for an LED flashlight, and a 25 shell bandolier. I wove a sling out of black 550 paracord. The LED light, extra ammo capacity, and the paracord sling and swivels give it a tactical feel without going over the top. If you want a reliable, inexpensive gun, that is a good platform for upgrades the Mossberg Maverick 88 is the one for you. more

Best Bang for your Buck (pun intended)
This is probably the best deal out there currently on the firearms market in general. I bought my 5+1 security model with the 18" barrel when it was on sale for $179.99 and have absolutely fallen in love with this s...hotgun. Having used the Mossberg 500 in the U.S. Army, I was pleasantly surprised to see how this less expensive Maverick 88 was almost identical aside from the safety and trigger group as well as the pump assembly. Otherwise everything else is completely interchangeable with Mossberg 500 parts. I chose this variant over the 8 shot security model sold at other places because there are A LOT more different barrel options for the 5+1 security model. While this is my primary home defense firearm, I plan on purchasing a rifled slug barrel with a cantilever scope-mount to use it for hog and deer hunting in the future. So far I've modified only with sling swivels (which it does not come with) and replaced the rear stock with a ATI collapsible pistol-grip stock along with a side-saddle shell holder. The ATI stock I added in order to shorten the length of the shotgun for better maneuverability inside the tight confines of a home. I just REALLY wish Mossberg would sell these in a bullpup configuration. (There is a 3rd party bullpup kit I may get in the future). I should note that I have run so far over 500 shells through it to include various birdshot loads, Spartan 00 buckshot, and Federal slugs through it and so far it has not had a single malfunction thanks in part to the double extractors that it inherits from the Mossberg 500 series. It also will take 3" shells but I prefer standard 2 3/4" shells. Recoil is as you would expect from a 12 gauge....stout. However with a proper stance it's easy even for a short guy like me to keep the shotgun on target doing rapid fire pump action. The pump action itself feels fairly smooth but demands that you rack it with authority so you don't short-shuck the shotgun and get a misfeed. That being said, I have yet to short-shuck it which I was very happy about. You also don't need to baby it as its very rugged. Even if some part were to break, the replacement parts are fairly inexpensive, but such an event is fairly rare with these shotguns. From my understanding the parts are manufactured in Mexico to a high standard while it is assembled with good quality control here in Texas. The main reason however why I chose this shotgun over others in the price range was because of it's interchangeable parts with the Mossberg 500's, it's solid reputation, and because it's at least partly made here in America. There are also tons of 3rd party accessories that you can buy for it and many modifications that can be done to it. To me the Maverick 88 shotgun is by far the best value in a firearm on the market today hands down as well as a true jack-of-all trades firearm that can do many tasks. Also btw, if you are sensitive to recoil, I recommend that you look at their 20 gauge models which are still plenty powerful for most home defense and hunting needs. more

    Solid reliable cheap
Bought this three years ago. Accuracy is not a real point with shotguns - not a rifled pipe so if you expect much accuracy with slugs beyond 80 yards you will be disappointed. What it can do is cycle through hundreds of ...rounds of slugs, OO or bird shot without needing much love in return. Clean it now and then after every thirty rounds is about right and oil the mechanisms once every month or two and it should last you for years. more

I bought this shotgun for home defense. It has an 18.5" barrel which makes it easy to maneuver in close quarters such as a house. For the home and the range
First and foremost, for the price point of this pump-action it is an overall steal. Upgrade the stock to M4 adjustable one and not only do you get a better grouping, you can even use it to shoot skeet. You feel it though... since Mossbergs are known for their kicking action. But the changing of the stock helped. The only downside to this is the forearms cannot be changed out as easy, if you want to upgrade, but you still can. No issue with any shells that have been ran through it to this point. If you are looking for a fun gun or just short on cash, GET THIS more

    Perfect shotgun package
I will be purchasing this shotgun in the next 10 days. I have used my cousins and have been by the local store to look at their inventory. The sales staff was great! Informative and helpful.

    Only One Problem
I got this shotgun almost 2 years ago. It worked great for the first year, but then it began to have issues extracting the shell from the chamber. However, after some quick research, I learned that I wasn't the only... one who had this issue. Mossberg apparently has sketchy quality control on their barrels. So I spent around a hour polishing the chamber with some oil and steel wool and it shoots fine now. If you can afford it, I'd go with a Mossberg 500 or a Remington 870. But if you only have $200 to spend then this is an acceptable shotgun. I wouldn't make it a permanent solution for home defense though. more

    Great Shotgun
I was new to duck hunting and didn't want to spend a fortune to get in. I was going to buy a more expensive shotgun, but the clerk introduced me to the Maverick. It was cheap enough so I bought two. One for my son a...s well. We both are avid duck hunters now and I had thought about upgrading, but to be honest I am happy with this gun and I find no need too. My son and I have been able to bond through hunting and I don't think it would have happened if it were not for the exceptional price of this fine firearm. American made, affordable, and dependable. more

    Love it!!!!!
I purchased this to go to turkey shoots. I was very nervous to shoot it. I was expecting it to kick hard. I was shocked. I even hit the target the first time. I did purchase a extra full choke to go to the next shoot. Hu...bby says that it works even better now. Can't wait until the next shoot to try it out. Love the sound of it. Great buy for the money. more

    very nice
I bet my life on this shotgun every night. For the price you really cannot beat it. If you are wanting to do a lot of mods to it you might be better off paying more for a big name shotgun. But for home defense this is gr...eat. more

    Awesome shotgun
I purchased this in the store in Knoxville, TN and it was very economical. I have taken it to the range twice, both times to the police range in Norris, TN. I have run several rounds of bird-shot and several rounds of bu...ck-shot and this gun functions flawlessly. I have purchased Hornady Critical Defense 00 Buck-Shot for the home-defense rounds and they cycle perfectly (with a hard kick). I also have some reduced recoil loads that I am going to try, but everything so far has cycled perfectly. I have disassembled the gun twice (after both range sessions) and cleaned and reassembled with no problems whatsoever. I tried a pistol grip, but found I could not hit anything, so I put the original stock back on (suggest you keep the original stock). I plan to install a light and a strap, but have recommended this gun to several friends. Out the door with tax and background check, I spent just over $200...that is a bargain for this gun. I highly recommend this gun for a simple, reliable home defense weapon. more

    Excellent Purchase
I bought this from a friend and between us we have dumped hundreds and hundreds of shells through it. Sometimes 13 shells at a time because of the side saddle I have. The barrel gets hot but this gun just keeps running. ...The action is smooth and reliable and the gun shoots like any other pump shotgun. This shotgun is significantly lighter though because of its construction so it will kick harder than a Remington. more

    Great Shotgun
You can't go wrong with the maverick 88. I have put over 250 rounds of slugs with out any jams. This is almost the same as the Mossberg 500 except for the safety and the forearm.

    Awesome shotgun for the price
Awesome shotgun for the price. You can add the 18.5 barrel for it for half the cost of the 500 shotgun. Mine did not come with a cap so check before leaving store. Or will be awkward if questioned by wildlife agent why y...ou have 6 shells in the gun. Highly recommend a sling for it. Will have to drill a hole in the stock for the eye for the sling. Add a allen company shell sleeve and it is ready to go hunting with. more

can't beat it for the price
There's no way to go wrong with this shotgun. For $200.00 you're getting a solid firearm. If you change to a pistol grip it is a handful. It's a good home defense gun.

    Pretty sweet for the money
You just can't beat this weapon for the money... They are made a bit more cheap than the mossberg 500.. Trigger assy is made of polymer like the stock and fore end. The safety is by the trigger guard and is my only ...complaint.. I like the safety location on the old 500s.. I bought mine.. Removed the plug.. Loaded it up with 000 buck. Stuck it by my door.. Good home defense weapon.. I can see some modifications are in it's future.. more

Very Similar to the Mossberg 500
For the money, you can't beat this gun. The mechanics are almost identical to the Mossberg 500. It is a well made gun and can handle the abuse of being thrown around in the back of your Jeep or pickup. It makes a ve...ry handy Self-Defense shotgun as well. If you change out the butt stock, be prepared to keep a stiff wrist when you fire it with the pistol grip. Great Gun!! more
