    Bought My Second One Today
I bought one of these online from Cabelas two months ago. I was really impressed! I have been shooting black powder pistols for 50 years. This gun is really built right. Locks up tight. Very nice fit and finish.

    1858
I've had my 1858 for a little while now. I have never had it fail to fire. Everything works as it should. Even with 30 grains and a conical bullet it's not overly loud. Recoil isn't too harsh either. Only gripe I have is... the cylinder pin can't be fully removed for cleaning but that is just how this gun is. Not a defect. You just have to work around that. It's a very nice gun and a rather light trigger so good trigger discipline is a must. more

    Accurate
My first cap and ball, I love the trigger pull, I'm using the pellets and they are great. At 10 yards it groups right 2-1/2", at 15 around 4" at 25 is where it starts to fly a little. I would defiantly recommen...d this to all wanting to dabble in cap & ball for the first time. more

Got it on sale, couldn't be happier
Just got a chance to shoot it and after a single hangfire it performed flawlessly. Probably due to the oil it's shipped in. It was super accurate and had a nice crisp but wide trigger. Blueing was perfect and very dark. ...I noticed the little slots for placing the hammer between cylinders don't really work (hammer doesn't go in far enough), but I don't plan on using them anyways. I'll just load five. Cylinder indexes very well. Recoil is not too extreme (but I'm coming from only having shot a 22 pistol so who knows) but enough to feel pretty exciting. I shot it along side a single action heritage rough rider 22 and it was spectacular. I'm not new to black powder (I have a Hawken 50) but this was easy and I think it would make a great first cap and ball for anyone inclined to such things. I'm definitely getting a spare cylinder. more

    Accurate Shooter
I'd grown so accustomed to my 1860 Army 1851 Navy revolvers shooting high I really didn't know how to act when the 1858 New Army hit dead on right out of the box. I do like the appearance of the 1860's more, but this one... is a real joy to shoot. Great fit & finish, although I could do without the stamped lettering on the barrel. I took the time to inspect some of these at Cabelas before purchasing. It paid off as one had pins literally falling out of the loading lever. These are tough guns and fantastic shooters, but like anything else, some aren't quite up to snuff. Best to inspect closely before buying, or just accept that a return might be in the cards if you buy sight unseen. Nothing wrong with that. more

    Great Gun!
I've read mixed reviews online about Pietta quality, This is my second Pietta and I think both of mine are the nicest looking and shooting. As for my 1858 sheriff model, I was very happy with the fit and finish. This gun... shoots great! Its not to big and heavy like the 8 inch model. Has a great balance and feel in your hand. You will be very happy with this model! For the new guys looking at this gun make sure you get a nipple wrench for a 1858 model as the nipples are recessed in the cylinder and regular wrench wont fit in there. more

    very disapointed
received my pietta 1858 today. The cylinder pin could not be pulled out of the cylinder to inspect the cylinder after putting the hammer on half cock. The action was very rough.I will send this gun back. Where was "...Quality Control". This gun should have never left the factory!!! more

    Little Remy
This great short-barrel cap & ball Remington 1858 model revolver is a great addition to a hunter's side arm collection. I have been using the 8-inch model 1858 for years until I gave it to my oldest son as a birthday... present last year (his burned up in a house fire). Pietta makes great looking and functioning revolvers and this 1858 Remington is no exception. My primary purpose for owning and using this revolver is as a "back-up" weapon when hunting dangerous game such as wild hogs during the muzzle loader seasons. It is extremely accurate out to 25 yards and packs quite a nasty punch when loaded with 25-30 grain charges of substitute black powder loads with over powder patch and round ball ammunition! The shorter 5&1/2-inch barrel makes the revolver easy to carry in a holster and does not loose any accuracy because of the shorter barrel. more

    Great shooter
Read some negative reviews on Pietta build quality. So far I have no problems with my 1858 Sheriff model. I like the short barrel and the ease of loading this pistol. I bought a conversion cylinder and took it to the ran...ge. Everything works perfect and the action was tight. Shooting this heavy frame with cowboy loads had a moderate kick. Fun shooter! more

I already own the eight inch barrel 1858 and always liked the look of the five inch model. So when it went on sale I bought it and boy do I love it great balance and fill. Like any pietta I took it apart when I got it an...d smoothed everything up and it shot great no problems. I would highly recommend it to anybody. more

    MY FAVORITE HANDGUN!
This is my second Pietta and is my favorite of all the handguns I own. Bought it back in 2013 and have used it a lot over the past years. Feel in love with it the moment I opened the box. The trigger pull was better then... my Ruger Blackhawk. The finish was nothing shot of beautiful. With the 51/2 inch barrel it looked tough and felt very comfortable in my hand. Cleaned it up and took it to the range. I could not believe how accurate this revolver was with both round ball and conical bullets. With 35 grains of triple 7 it shot both round ball and conical to almost identical point of impact. If you want a fun gun that is very accurate and fun to shot, buy this one. It is worth it even if it cost twice the price. Now I'm getting ready to buy a conversion cylinder in 45 long colt. Have heard that they make the gun a really great shooter with less mess. Buy one as you will love it! more

    A quality gun
After much debating I finally decided on picking up one of these Pietta replicas of the Remington New Model Army to add to the collection. I was very pleased upon receiving this pistol - fit and finish is better than I e...xpected for a Pietta. Accuracy impressed me as the sights appear to actually be set at about 25yds versus the 75-100yds you usually get with cap and ball revolvers. A 30gr charge with .454 balls printed very nice 1.5-2 inch groups off hand at 25 yards despite the heavy trigger pull. Timing on the gun I received is good. The only negatives are the slightly heavy hammer draw and trigger pull. Overall a very nice and fun cap and ball pistol. If you're reading this and wondering....for the money just buy one! more

    Very sweet handgun.
I received my 1858 revolver on the 16th and couldn't wait to open the box. Once I got all of the oil removed from and out of it and gave it a proper cleaning and oiling I was amazed. The quality was excellent. The grips ...were from a very good quality of oak. The bluing on the revolver was excellent as well. The brass of the trigger guard was polished to a mirror finish. I cant wait to get to the woods and burn some powder. My next purchase will be a conversion cylinder. Let you know how that goes. Thanks Pietta, job well done. more

    FUN GUN
I took the gun to the range, along with my other collection of guns to see how it compared to the rest. I was so impressed with how it worked that I put everything else away and shot only this one. Of course I had 3 spar...e cylinders because of my brass version, and a loading stand to make loading simple. Never had a misfire. After a few rounds I had it sighted in pretty close. All of my friends with me had to shoot it including my Wife. In the near future I am going to buy the long version. Cabela's was good to deal with shipped fast and was more than satisfied over all. Cleanup after was not too bad. put in dishwasher and voila, clean enough to eat off. Make sure you inspect every part and oil good after. more

Can,t Go Wrong With This One
I've been wanting one of these for quite sometime. This is the third B.P. revolver I've owned since late sixties.Beautiful revolver!Trigger pull is five pounds with alittle creep. Some machineing marks, most are in areas n...ot seen when gun is assembled.Small ding in wooden grips and scratch on the loading lever.I did chamfer the chambers and crowned the muzzle. Been thinking about smoothing the action but will wait until broken in. Number 10 C.C.I. caps are perfect and .454 balls are the way to go. Mine loves 20 gr. with cornmill filler.I do not use wads. With the filler I use homemade shooting grease under the ball.Been able to shoot all afternoon with out cleaning or binding loaded this way.Cleaning is super easy too. When I load for hunting I'll go to30 to 35 gr with wonder wad and grease over projectile.GREAT GUN! and very accurate Had to file front sight alittle, very happy with groups at 50 yards after lapping the barrel.Go ahead and press the purchase now button, you want be dissatisfied.Alot of fun and shooting pleasure for the money. Don't let the work I've done to mine scare you away .I pistolsmith for a hobby and this is what I do to all my handguns. Thanks Cabela's super service and great firearm. more

    Very nice
Just got the gun. It's very nice. I already did an almost complete take down. Only thing I cannot get removed is the loading lever because the screw absolutely will not loosen. It's almost as if a torque wrench was used ...and they over tightened that screw. Everything else works as it should. I hope to find an opportunity to fire it at some point in the near future. more

    1858 Pietta Sheriff Model
Really liked the fit and finish of the metal. Grips a little rough in spots. Barrell length is ideal for me allowing a shorter sighting radius I prefer. Trigger broke perfectly for my preference. You won't be disappointed.
I have owned other black powder pistols but when I was introduced to the features of the 1858 Remington, specifically the easy cylinder removal, I knew I had to have one. I had handled the full sized model and it felt ...clumsy” as my hands are small, so I knew the 5-1/2 inch model is the one I needed. When Cabela’s offered that model at a very affordable price, I ordered one and have not been disappointed. The quality of the workmanship is great and it is easy for my smaller hands to use. more

    Pietta/Remington 1858 C & B 5.5"
This is my first C & B revolver. I really liked the balance of the 5.5" barrel. The trigger guard is too close to the knuckle on my middle finger but that is due to my large hands. What a blast to shoot. haven't... set any records doing reloads but who care it's just fun. 30gr of Pyrodex P, a CCI #10, Hornady .451" ball and a lubed wad and make some smoke. Accuracy is not to bad considering the sights are anything but easy to use. Just remember to clean thoroughly. more

    Quality piece.
This gun is so nice. I received it in September and it's a beauty. I also bought the spare cylinder, here on Cabela's and it fit perfect. I loaded it when I got it in Sept. and wasn't able to make it to the range until J...anuary. It shot flawlessly and was dead on. Loading is so easy with a flask that measures the correct powder amount, and there's tons of videos on Youtube that show how to do it, if you are clueless like I was. I use Triple Seven FFG powder and cleaning was a breeze. No one was at the range when I went, but I'm sure this dandy thing will be a great conversation starter, and maybe I can get others hooked on black powder the way I am now. I'm seriously thinking about getting a black powder rifle to hunt with, now. more

Great value, but fit & QC needs improvement
Once I corrected a couple of issues, this turned out to be a great revolver. The main problem I had is that the loading lever would drop with each shot, locking up the cylinder. I had to modify the loading lever latch to... fix this problem. The fitter at the factory had placed a bevel on the bottom of the spring loaded latch because the loading lever catch was too short to catch the loading lever. I removed the bevel and put a bit of back bevel on it and now it stays put until I unlatch it. The other problem was that some de-burring was necessary in several areas for smooth operation. Once these issues were fixed, it has functioned flawlessly. I have really enjoyed this revolver. It shoots close to point of aim at 25 yards, and is very accurate. It is timed well, and It is really a great value. more

Fun gun for those into Black Powder.
I purchased a Pietta 7" barrel gun at a pawn shop used in a very fancy wooden box with all the accessories. I was hooked the first time I loaded up and shot. But that kit is to nice and I wanted to keep it as new as... possible giving it's from the 70's. more

    Nothing but 44Cal. for me.
I now have eight 44Cal. Pietta BP. This way I save money as I do not have to buy different size ball's. I also do not have to bring all my pistol's when I go to the range, and this allows me to have extra loaded cyl. on ...hand.I just found out about a trick with my BP hand gun's that I am going to try out. Hoot to shoot
This is my first BP revolver and the Pietta 1858 was everything I expected and more. The fit and finish of this revolver is excellent. It shoots tight patterns with a recoil less than a 9mm. I use .451 balls with #10 cap...s and get great results every time. One trick I picked up on a BP blog, is to put bore butter between the wad and ball. This works great for keeping fouling to a minimum, makes cleaning quick and eliminates chain fires. If you're thinking of getting into a BP revolver, this produce from Cabelas can't be beat. more

    Uberti-Pietta Comparison 1858 Remington
I own both 1858 New Army Remington pistols Uberti in 7 1/2 " Stainless and a 5 1/2 " Pietta in Blue finish. They are comparable in fit and finish. The difference being these. Trigger on the Pietta had sharper ed...ges than I liked, the Pietta had an oil finish on the wood which I liked better than the eurathane finish on the Ubert. The cylinders were not quite interchangeable..Uberti's fit the Piatta but the Piatta's was a hair to long for the Uberti, Maybe a .001". If you are ordering the cartridge conversion cylinder get the one for the Uberti.Note: Shorter barrel is handier but leverage on the loading lever is less..Harder to seat balls. also Pietta's ram is shaped for RB and the Uberti's shaped for conical bullets. Both shoot great! more

    I'm hooked!
I bought this revolver as my first ever BP gun and now I am 100% hooked. Ladies and gentlemen if your thinking about buying one of these and you have money for another addiction, DO IT! This model with the shorter barrel... shoots amazingly well and I consistently see 4 inch groups at 25-30 yards. I use a lubed felt wad and 25 grains of FFF Triple Seven for target loads (I’m going to try 15 grains soon) and 30 grains for hunting or protection which gives it a heck of a punch. This gun uses cci #10 caps with .454 lead balls and I have put over 500 rounds through it without a misfire. The recoil feels like a full size 9mm or a .380 except your shooting a large chunk of lead with big boom factor and lots of smoke and its sure punches a large hole on paper. I have had people approach me at the range asking if I was shooting a Raven. Even the ladies enjoy shooting this large caliber pistol with the recoil being as manageable as it is. I am so pleased with this purchase that I am saving for a Stainless Buffalo 1858 with the 12 inch barrel and target sights. I have read online that these are accurate to 50-100 yards and produce muzzle velocities of 1100+ feet per second. If you’re considering this gun, do it. It has pleasantly exceeded my expectations and is now a new passion. more

The best cap and ball revolver ever
I bought my first short barrel Model 1858 back in 2004 and it quickly became my favoite . Beside the short and handy size it hit dead on at 15 yards .My other cap'n ball required so much aimming compensation it took away... all the fun.The only issue I had with the short barrel was that it required extra force to seat the ball home but the more I shot it the less I notice this drawback.I finally get around to buy a second one after so many years. Loads of Fun!
This was my second cap-&-ball revolver and I'm very pleased with it. The workmanship is excellent. Everything is tight and precisely fitted, The more I work with it, the better I like it! It is a beautiful replica th...at sparks conversation from people who visit my home, where I keep it on display with my collection of genealogical artifacts. With a little practice I've learned to swap out cylinders in just about five seconds. It is a little more barrel-heavy than my 1851 Colt replica (also in 5-1/2" bbl), so it's a little slower to bring on target. And the mainspring pull is also heavier, so my thumb gets more of a workout from cocking the 1858 than it does from my 1851. So I now use the lighter 1851 strong-side and my 1858 for cross-draw and the combo is outstanding! more

At the pistol range this handgun shot very well from rest at 25 yards. At 50... yards it did not perform as well as the 8 inch version however, this was expected. This is the 4rth 1858 model Pietta that I have purchased of which two were in stainless. All performed well and have a very comfortable feel. Remington 44 New Army 5½"
Having two of these with 8" barrels got the 5½" versionfor daily carry. These Pietta cap & ball guns are simplysuperb, as accurate as any cartridge revolver/pistolI have, without the hefty recoil of smokel...ess powder. As a carry gun they do need to be regularly fired, cleaned, and reloaded, at least weekly (Wild BillHickok did his daily.) Keep the Rem #10 caps and thenipples free of grease, load with about 24 grains of BPor substitute (I like 777,) dry lube wad optional, and topoff the loaded 451 or 454 ball with Crisco (helpingkeep the ball in place as well as lubing.) Slow reloadissues can be mitigated with spare pre-loaded Piettacylinders (note well that Uberti cylinders do not fit!), butbe aware of the hazards of carrying loaded cappedcylinders around (you will be liable for any mishaps!) more

Different Action than 6-Year Old Pietta 1858 NA
This is my first review of something I've bought at Cabela's, and I may modify it if possible after I've taken this New Army 1858 with the shorter barrel to the range. I have had a regular-length 44 caliber, New Army 185...8 Remington Replica by Pietta for over five years, and I recently bought this one with a shorter barrel to be able to shoot more. I purchased both at Cabela's. more

    Great Fun
I purchased this to go with my 1858 .44 with the longer barrel. They are both fine pistols and fun to shoot. I would not hesitate to buy another. I can't find anything about them I am not happy with.

This has turned out to be an exceptional weapon! It took me a little while to become accustomed to the Western grip, but after a few adjustments it is a tack driver at 30 ft. right out of the box. Pretty Sweet
Mine is quite nice. The grips have below average grain, and so I am having stag grips made. Outside of that (and a loading lever latch spring that sticks a bit), the gun is perfect. It is better balanced than the 8-inch ...version. I am also replacing the nipples with stainless ones. more

    Great Revolver!
HI,This is my first cap and ball gun and it is alot of fun.Its very well made and it does not have that cheap tinny feel. The fact that the cylinder comes out just my simply bring the hammer back is great. This means no pu...lling a metal piece on the side which may require you to used a plastic or rubber mallet. The only thing I would say bad is the front sight is to high and will shot low.I will be filing the sight down to solve this simple problemThis gun is highly recommended. Thanks, slowly 9 more

The best cap and ball revolver for Cowboy Action
I own three of the full size .44 1858 Remies and have run them for SASS shooting for a couple years with out a failure. I adedd two of the 5-1/2" barrels because they are faster in and out of the holster and will be... just as reliable. I also have several extra cylinders and they all interchange and run perfectly. I recommend #10 caps. Also buy some SS nipples and add one to each cylinder to mark your unloaded chamber. I bought a parts kit and have not needed it, must be a good insurance policy. more

    My Favorite to Date
This Remington replica is a well-made, great shooting, BP revolver. The point-of-aim is right on at 25 yards and it's as accurate as my target model with adjustable sights and 8" barrel. It holsters well and feels b...etter balanced with the shorter barrel. With a conversion cylinder and hand loaded black powder cartridges it makes a great .45. As I have yet to fire this, I can only say it appears well made. the action locks up tight. Cylinder has notches so it can be carried fully loaded with the hammer down. Nice Guns, Good price
I did a lot of research when looking into black powder pistols i found the 1858 Remington to be the most interesting. Cabelas had the best price I could find by far and i like the shorter barrels. I bought two of them by... the way... Mindy the rebate champ
With the gift cards given to me as gifts it was a hard choice as to what I would get myself. This gun was my choice, & with an extra $20 off on top of the sale price what a great deal! This gun is on back order so I ...have yet to get it and give a review on it so what this review is about is Cabela’s costumer service. When I was finished checking out I noticed that the $20 rebate was not used on my order so when I called Cabela’s and talked to a very pleasant rep. named Mindy and I told her my complaint. After asking me some info she literally had picked up the ball ran down the field & scored the winning point and I went wild! Ok not so wild but was very happy for the excellent job she did. 1858 New Army 5-1/2" Barrel
This is my third black powder pistol from cabelas. I really like this one. I have nothing bad to report about this gun. Fit and finish is great. bluing is as good as any s&w I've ever looked at. The short bbl. really... helps make it come up fast, faster than the 8" models, and it feels good in your hand. after bringing the front sight down, it shoots right were you point it. these pistols are more accurate than most smokeless powder pistols. you'll be able to keep all shoots inside 3" out to 30 yrds. if you work with your loads a little. I use 30grs. pistol P powder, 44 wads, and 454 rd. ball, than order an extra cylinder when you can, these 58s can be loaded a lot faster than the 51 or 60s they are hard pistols to beat. pietta makes a very fine product, and you don't have to brake the bank to buy one, two, three. If you have one of these puppies, you are not under gunned. You could take deer up close, or maybe from a tree stand with the 8" models. Be sure to try the TDC ratcheting nipple wrench #XL-21-7375 for the # 10 size, on all new cylinder nipples, they come in three sizes You will need # 10 rem caps for this pistol. all from cabelas. Thats all folks. lets make some smoke!!! more

1858 New Army with 5-1/2 barrel rocks!

A Best Buy in my book!
I've had it now for over 2 years. As usual, I got good service and fast delivery from Cabelas. My 58 shoots to point of aim at 25-30 yds with 25 grains of "P" (pistol) powder. I cast my own bullets with a mold ...bought from Cabelas. I also bought a spare cylinder shortly after I got the pistol. I shot it recently after having both cylinders loaded for about 15 months. I live in a very damp location in Appalachia. All 12 shots fired without fail, and my friends were amazed at the accuracy. I only use #10 caps with it, as #11's were not a snug fit. I have many varied arms, but this one rides with me the most. When I choose to open carry, this is the hog leg I usually choose. The 5 1/2" barrel is a real winner on the draw, and it points better for me than the 8". I do not feel under-armed when I have my "Baby-Doll" with me. If legal, I wouldn't hesitate to hunt bear with it, but, alas, it isn't legal. more

    Loved it but...
Cabelas: ***** for customer service.Workmanship: ** The first pistol that I bought had the 8” barrel (same basic pistol with longer loading lever and barrel). It was soon delivering 2” groups at 25 yards, however occ...asionally the hammer became stuck and I had to remove and replace the cylinder in order to resume operation. I exchanged the 8" model with Cabelas for this model (5 1/2” barrel, more $$). I found that it was difficult to latch the hammer, but did not want to return to Cabelas, so I fixed it by deburring the trigger and hammer, improving the trigger pull. Burrs on the plunger caused it to hang up in the cylinder, which I also fixed. The first time that I pulled the trigger, the loading lever unlatched and fell down, and continued to do so with every shot, so I rested it on a bag, and was soon shooting 2” groups(despite shorter barrel). I filed and fit to achieve positive latching of the loading lever, then cold blued my de-burr jobs.Fun: ***** If you have the patience to work through the manufacturing defects (I do) you may love this thing! I have a number of modern semi-automatic pistols, but this is the funnest thing that I own. Both pistols delivered excellent groups, and I can shoot for hours on very little $$ (because it takes so long to load). I am now looking at either an 1860 or an 1851. more

    one flaw
An astounding value, with one flaw that keeps it out of the "too good to be true" catagory. The flaw is the trigger. It is way too stiff and lacks feel. I have noticed a dramatic improvement after 50 or so roun...ds fired. However it remains the weak link in an otherwise excellent product. I know a gunsmith who told me to put about 100 rounds through it as is, then bring it to him if i'm still not satisfied. He said it was an easy job but should be done after it has been broken in properly. All in all I'm very satisfied. more

1858 New Army 5-1/2 barrel with extra cylinder
When I opened the box, I was greeted with the usual Italian maker's four quarts of SAE30W motor oil covering the gun, and after some de-greasing, I began the serious once-over. The gun was well fitted, all parts presente...d no seriously sharp edges. The grips were a little over-sized for the frame, but with a little sand paper I'll get them down to the proper size. The cylinder pin was a bit stiff, but a little dab from an old tube of graphite grease, and it moved much more smoothly. The action is slick and tight, and both cylinders interchanged with just a little work. Some light stoning of the hand, and all works quite smoothly now. Since most Italian reproduction percussion handguns have inconsistently machined nipple sizes, I swapped out the nipples on both cylinders with some American made aftermarket bronze nipples that are a snug fit for CCI #11 caps. I haven't shot the revolver yet, but if it is like my other Pietta 1858 with 8 inch barrel, it should be quite accurate. I noticed the front sight on the new gun to be a bit taller than what I've seen on other "Remmies", so I suspect it should shoot to point of aim at 25 yards with the right load. more

    1858 new army 44 5 1/2"
Just recieved my new 1858 pietta today. Inspected it wiped it down checked operation and headed to the range. I have been shooting black powder for over 30 yrs. Both long guns, single shot big bore pistols and revolver p...istols. I still have a 1973 hewes (no longer in bussiness)1858 36 cal. That was built by pietta and still shooting it, BUT I CAN TELL YOU THAT THIS NEW PISTOLA IS THE BEST I HAVE SEEN. Out of the box the action, finish, and overall quality of workmanship is unserpassed by any I have been looking at. At the range is where you find the proof of the pudding. I loaded it up with 30grains of 3fg and .454 round ball purchased at Cabelas with a 44-45 lubed wad squezzed off the first shot at a target 30' away and caught the edge of a 1 1/2 inch bullseye only to follow up with a group with all holes touching but one and that one I was thinking how good this piece is and not concentrating on my target. I did a cylinder of draw and shoot and again it worked without missfires. I did use # 10 caps that I always press on with a wood cloths pin.out of 24 rounds I only had 1 cap come off. If you are looking for a good shooter this is the one. I am ordering the 8" model tomorrow and I am sure it will be just as good as this one. Thank you Cabelas as alway's you did it again. more

    One great pistol!
Having purchased several cap and ball pistols over the years(starting in 1976 while a senior in high school, an 1860 army .44 cal. What a thrill it was, and still is, to buy a real pistol thru the mail.) I have found var...ying degrees of quality. Most are Pieta and co. and were good overall with a timing problem here and some looseness there, I must say this latest addition is by far the tightest, most well made black powder pistol I have ever purchased. I wouldn't hesitate to buy the smokeless powder conversion cylinder for this pistol and may in fact do so after seeing its high quality. Thanks and I'll be back for more to add to my growing collection! more

My 1st Black Powder Experience is Awesome
I bought this one after much, much thought. Loading the cylinder is much easier on this replica than the Colt Navy or Army models. I used Goex replica powder sticks (I cut them in half to fit in the cylinder) the one mea...nt for .45 caliber and followed the wad and ball course of things. I used CCI No 10 caps. And wow! I had tons of fun shooting. Lots of smoke and inaccuracies on my part, but after much practice I was able to shoot reasonable groups. more

    best of the best
Very well built, remington brand is the best, and Cabelas still has great service every time, I got a conversion cylinder for this to fire 45 cowboy bullets, its awesome, I can load this remington with the conversion cyl...inder faster than I can load my 38 special, its just like poppin in a clip, you put all 6 bullets in at once and close the lever. I love the shorter barrel, its a nice (medium frame revolver) Medium frames are my favorite becuase the barrel is long enough to be accurate and obsorb the recoil but short enough not to be top heavy and is more manuverable. I would recomend this gun for anyone who likes to shoot or even for self defence if you get the conversion cylinder becuase you can load this thing faster than modern day revolvers but it has that classic look as well, this gun is actually the exact same model that Clint East Wood was packing in (Pale Ryder) But anyways, I already had the 36 long barrel but I must say this one is much better. P.S. remington is the best brand for doing a conversion for that fact that they can be loaded and unloaded so quickly, I still like Colts for shooting black powder and lead balls though. more

1858 New Army 5-1/2 inch barrel
This is a fun gun to shoot. The loading lever is shorter than my '58 with 8 inch barrel and my '51 with 7-1/2 inch barrel. It's a little more difficult to ram the lead ball with the shorter loading lever but it's still f...un to shoot. I bought this to have a smaller gun for my shoulder holster but it has the same punch as any of my larger guns. .44 Cap-n-Ball; What a buy!
This is my first Pietta BP pistol and I must say that I am impressed. The fit and finish was even better than I expected and it feels great in my hand. I have owned several other BP pistols of various manufacture and I c...an't say this Pietta version lacks quality in any respect, even though it is by far the least expensive. Its a keeper but needs better nipples to hold cap.
The pistol is well worth the money. I rate it two because the percusion caps # 10 or 11 will not stay on the nipples. It has a nice blue finish and the grips are average. The trigger pull is sweet.I can hit a phone book ...at ten yards dead center. If it wasn't for the percusion caps falling off when firing or tilting the pistol . I would rate it a 5.I think cabelas needs to contact the company or provide better nipples with this pistol. more

This is my first black powder gun. I'm happy with its performance even though I don't know bullet velocities yet. I like the sound and smoke it produces. I've shot it on two occations. All six bullets left with out fail.... I'm using #10 caps and .454 round balls on top of prelubed wads. Accuracy is not bad either. I shot to glass soda pop bottles at 10 yds dead center. I would have given this gun a 5 rating except the blueing is not well done on the triger. Easy to clean and oil. The gun came will good instruction manuel. more

    new army
The revolver looks like it will be fun to shoot. Overall quality was good. One issue with the brass casting for the trigger guard it has some small pin holes on the left side. I look forward to shooting this revolver for... many years to come. more

The 1858 Rem 51/2 barrel revolver
This is a little honey...I have both the bigger barrel and this.I have been using 30 grains of 777 powder 3 fg. Drop a pistol wad into the cylinder followed by a conical pistol bullet and its like firing a modern weapon.... Make sure you use #10 caps. No 11 are too big. The literature on the gun doesn't tell you about caps. The extra cylinder makes loading really fast and great on the range or if your out and about with this baby. Bottom line...highly recommended for black powder buffs. more

    Excellent pistol
This gun is nicely made, balances well, shoot like a dream. I have another Pietta Remington from Cabelas--the regular 7.5 inch bbl. These are my pistols for CAS. They shoot well, make losts of smoke and noise and feel go...od in my hip and cross-draw holsters. I put a conversion cylinder in it and it puts those heavy .45 LC cowboy bullets right to the point of aim. more

    Good Shooter
The center pin was a little large for an R&D, so I had to ream the cyl. Accurate, better than an 8inch uberti. Good action/finish/wood, however I had to refinish the stocks. The 1858 in 5 1/2 is a nice looking unit th...at handles well. more

    Great Gun!
I recieved the pistol in flawless condition and in good time. It is an awesome pistol to behold. The avant garde styling of this pistol with the 5 1/2" barrel makes it really stand out. Very deep bluing and the Fit ...and finish were perfect as far as I can tell. It's very tight and I am thinking that after about a hundred rounds or so, it will seem like an old friend. I purchased this pistol with the express purpose of a full conversion to .45 Long Colt. I bought the Kirst Cartridge Konverter w/gate and the Richards-Mason ejector assembly.I plan to use Magtech 250GR, 761fps Cowboy Action Cartridges. Im very satisfied with the quality and am looking forward to taking it to the range. more

    High quality.
I had already picked out this model of BP revolver from the Cabelas internet site before heading in to the store. When the sales rep pulled up the catalog number, there was another number he didn't recognize. It was this... same pistol with a case-hardened frame and the engraved grips. The catalog shows this model only with the longer bbl, but there is was in a 5 1/2" bbl, and only $40 more. Beautiful! I have been dealing firearms for 35 years. This is a finely crafted and excellent quality firearm. The metal craftsmanship is really nice, deep-good quality blueing and the wood to metal finish is outstanding. Haven't shot it yet, but if it shoots as good as it looks, I will be extremely satifsfied and it will get my high recommendation. Another great product marketed by Calelas, my one-stop candy store! more

1858 New Army 5-1/2" Barrel .44 Caliber Revolver
Wow! This gun is QUALITY! I cannot honestly find anything to nitpick about. Your money is well spent if you buy this gun. The cylinder locks up tight without ANY wobble, and it is lined up dead on with the barrel. It is ...so nice, that at first, I didn't know if I wanted to shoot it. I still haven't yet, but I'm certain that it will be fun to shoot (possibly this weekend since I'll finally have some free time). From the reviews that I have read on this and other sights, it seems that many people recommend using .454 cal round balls, .44 cal pistol wadding, and 24 grains of Pyrodex pistol propellant. This is the setup that I intend to use, as I have read that greasing over the loaded chambers tends to get quite messy after only a few shots. There is no doubt in my mind that this gun will shoot as good as it looks. You can even purchase a .45LC conversion kit for it so that you can use cowboy .45 Long Colt loads. I might look into this in the future, but for the cost of the conversion kit, I might as well buy another one of these guns and have a brace of them. I highly recommend buying this gun. more

    5.5" 44 cal new army
Cabela's has done it again with the 5.5 inch 44 caliber, new army, revolver. Excellent fit and finish. I equipped it with ivory grips and it functions flawlessly. Like all black powder it must be kept clean. I have fired... several Colts and this is an excellent "BANG" for your buck! I bought two additional cylinders and they fit well. Of course after it was broken in they slid in easier. Get a nipple wrench and keep them clean. Dirt is usually the culprit in malfunctions. I recommended this firearm to several shooting friends who saw it and admired it! I use it for quick draw. Again thanks Cabela's. more

    Pietta`s sherrif model a success!
I found my Pietta`s sherrif`s model to be just as good as all the other reiewers said. It does have a very deep rich blue.My only complaint with this fine gun is while it shoots to the point of it`s sights, the octagon b...arrel is not quite screwed all the way even with the frame of the gun. I wonder if it was powder coated in pieces and then assembled, and if that is why it is not even. Anyway it shoots like a dream and the amount of difference is negligable. Nitpicking for sure but if Imade such a fine piece I`d make sure it was all the way on, otherwise, it`s near perfection. Even with this it is a beautifulwell made gun that I`d recomend to anyone! Loaded properlyit could easily save one`s life in a survival situation. No doubt it could drop a deer up close. It`s a well made gun. more

    5 1/2" 58 Army
Nice revolver and a good addition to this shooters collection. This revolver has good balance and sight plane. Cylinder locks up nice and tight. This gun shoots on target and holds a good group 3 1/2" @ 15 yards usi...ng 24 grains of pyrodex. It is a little quicker to get out of holster than the 8" target model that I also have.Good revolver for nice price. more

    GOOD GUN
I purchased this gun 2 weeks ago and was finally able to fire it today. The gun looks good, feels good but most importantly it shoots good. The only problem is that all of the Remington #11 percussion caps fall off with ...the first shot. I was able to get CCI # 10 caps and they work great. I like this gun and will probably purchase another one to go with it. GOOD GOOD GOOD!!!. more

1858 New Army 5-1/2" Barrel .44 Caliber Revolver
If I had it to do over, I would buy this revolver again. First is the ease of reloading.Second is the ease of cleaning.Third is the accuracy. Put 6/6 in a 5" circle at 25 yards.I base this in comparison to the repli...ca 1860 Army Colt that I also shoot.Construction is excellent and the quality is very good.I also bought 2 extra cylinders so I could have extra preloaded cylinders loaded and ready to fire. This is an excellent choice if you are new to black powder orf have been into this hobby for years. more

    Beautiful !!
Just got my 1858 Reminton revolver with 5.5" barrel. I was really impressed with the fit & finish. The action while a little stiff was smooth in operation. I have not had a chance to fire it yet, but if it shoot...s as good as it looks i will not be disappointed. I would highly recommend this gun to anyone looking for a very well made black powder handgun. more

1858 New Army 44 Caliber Revolver
shoots great, problem I don't like it that the trigger is cut so you can't spin it. Also another biggie is that the grips don't fit the frame. They hang out over the frame on the corners.

    Western Movie Prop
I'm very Pleased with this piece! Mostly will be firing blanks through it for a Western and Stage Productions. Which I'm buying the Conversion Cylinder for that and eventually be firing some live ammo through this Bad Bo...y! The shorter barrel makes it a lot easier for quick draws, and I Love the quick reloading of this piece as well. I would recommend this hand gun! more

I have owned about 10 different Pietta made revolvers, which I've purchased through Cabelas. Their fit and finish is great. Very high quality. Cabelas is the only place I'll buy percussion pistols from.
