    Accurate cap& ball
I have two of these revolvers both are very accurate with cap & ball or conversion cylinders. I did however upgrade the nipples, so the caps stayed on better.

    Excellent Shootin' Iron
The quality of the revolver is truly impressive; deep blue, no machine marks, and perfect fit of parts. But what really impressed me is the accuracy! With round ball over a felt wad, the revolver is shooting tight, consi...stent groups to point of aim at 25 yards. Right on par with my Smith Model 57. Also put some fun factor back into my range sessions, and makes them more relaxed. It's a bit like instant gratification from reloading at the range. Also draws a lot of interest from smokeless shooters and enhances the social aspect of range time. more

    1858 44 cal.
The 1858 was the first black powder revolver I bought from Cabela's.. It was on sale and I'm so glad I bought it. Its finish and function was excellent. It likes the 454 round balls and is very accurate to shoot. I recei...ved it quickly with no problems with shipping. I would buy again. more

    1858 Remington Love it!
So glad I bought this.. Now if I could just find everything needed to enjoy shooting it. Finish is very nice, No mill marks or dings. Crisp action seems very solid and sure. Right out of the box..no polish or tuning need...ed. Got the starter kit with it. The .451 balls will cut a small ring when loading but next time I want to try the .454.Shoots very well and the #10 Remington caps work fine. I am using Black Powder 3FG and it caint be better. If you are wanting to shoot BP Revolvers.. This one is a keeper. I caught it on sale for less than you find a used one on the market. Thanks Cabela's.. more

    Great BANG for your buck..
I recently purchased the Pietta Model 1858 New Army .44 caliber revolver from Cabella's. I have been shooting black powder weapons for the past 45 years and this is by far the best replica I have ever owned or shot. The ...fit and finish is superb, the workmanship surpasses that of the old gunsmiths and this is an outstanding buy. If you have ever had the urge to shoot black powder revolvers, get this one. Also, be sure to get the spare cylinder for quick reloads. more

    Nice Gun and Kit
Beautiful gun out of the box, excellent craftsmanship and a great replica of a great American Classic. Fun to shoot, mechanically sound. I also purchased a .45 LC conversion cylinder designed for shooting Cowboy Action l...oads, again performed flawlessly. The starter kit will provide you with everything you need to get started except the powder/caps. The powder horn is plastic but gets the job done. At some point you will need to purchase more wads, seals and lead balls once you have exhausted this supply. The lead balls are OK, they have the excess burrs on them from when they were casted. You can also buy quality round balls made by Hornady also sold from Cabela's. Overall a great set. more

fun to shoot and open carry
the only reason why I did not give 5 stars is the instructions from pietta and the ones from cabelas dont jive, for powder charge, I weighed my charge out on my RCBS scale to see if the included powder measure was on...i...t is not. so i weighed 32 grains of Pyrodex (P) and set the measure accordingly shoots well, I ordered Hornady .451 and .454 round balls, have not recieved 454's to try yet. It is fun too shoot, cleaning is easy, check out the video duelist1954 dose on you tube for disassembly and cleaning. My friend shot it today and he will be buying one, a good conversation piece,as I open carry it. I recommend this pistol, remember, pyrodex clean with 1 part water and 1 part vinegar more

    Well Crafted Shooter
I have three Cabela's Pietta revolvers. All three are well fitted, well finished, and strong for replica BP revolvers. I have shot this gun many times with a cylinder full (allowing only a ball to barely seat) of Schuetz...en FFFg, it has held up fine. It shoots quite well for accuracy as well. I recommend it highly. more

    Great value, great gun
I was expecting quality and quick delivery and that is exactly what I got! The 1858 New Army .44 has a good weight and feel and is solidly built. The starter kit that came with it is doable as well. I will be placing fut...ure orders with Cabela's! more

    A good Revolver
I like the Remington 1858. It is well-built and easy to maintain. This is definitely a way to shoot without having to pay outrageous prices for ammo.

    Top quality
My only suggestion for improvement is with the Pietta instructions. All of their cap & ball revolvers are covered by this one manual. Different models are described with different terms, depending on what page you ar...e on. I thought I had researched this gun, but nowhere in the catalog or literature is this described as being a copy of a Remington model, yet there is an important instruction that refers to "Remington" without confirming that THIS one is a Remington . I had to go to the internet verify that. YouTube in particular has been most helpful. more

    Nice purchase
Extremely happy with the pistol. The only thing that kept this from gettng 5 stars was the nipple wrench that came with the starter kit. Already had to modify it. It broke after the first use. The pistol is great!

    Starter kit is worthless
The Pietta pistol is excellent but the starter kit is worthless. The balls are less than .451 and poorly cast and the powder flask is made of cheap plastic. Save your money and purchase individual items.

    Pleasantly surprised
After almost 40 years since I last owned any cap and ball revolver, I decided to re-vist having one. I was amazed at the improvement in quality in the new Italian replicas. With the price of ammunition and components ris...ing, I'll still be able to enjoy target shooting at a fraction of the cost of my cartridge guns. Sure it's more work to shoot and clean but it'll help keep me occupied during retirement. The only thing is the Pietta manual suggest 15 grains of fff powder. The Cabelas manual states 30 grains. I'm using Cabelas recommendation to avoid a gap between the powder and ball. more

Cool gun, well manufactured, a lot of fun o shoot. This gun was easy to load, but had a problem with the caps. #11 caps are in the starter kit but should have gotten #10 because the caps popped off after the first shot. Over all a lot of fun to shoot.

    Cabelas saves the Union!
Due to a promotion in my Civil War reenactment unit, I needed a side arm. I reserached all options and various dealers. The Remington 1858 was my choice and Pietta is, without question, the most popular replica available.... It has a long history of superior finish and performance. That, plus the great price at Cabela's, was all I needed to order mine.It and a spare cylinder, arrived on schedule and exceeded my best dreams. My friends who are active black powder shooters were particularly impressed by the fit and finish and general quality. When I take to the field this spring, my Remington 1858 will be at my side, except when I have it out to impress the spectators and Johnny Rebs! more

    Well worth the wait
This revolver was back ordered when I bought it; Cabelas delivered it as was posted. This revolver is great! The fit and finish are outstanding, defects described such as poor fitting stocks, tool marks etc were not evid...ent on my revolver. The accuracy is right on the money. The finish is very dark, even and smooth. The biggest goodie is the trigger action. It breaks smoothly at a very acceptable pull. more

Love the 1858 New Army Revolver
I have plenty of other firearms but this was my first black powder gun. I'm having more fun at the range than with all my other guns. The quality and craftmanship are great. I'm really impressed with how amazingly accura...te it is. I can hit an average size pumpkin from a standing position at 50 yards 9 out of 10 shots. BTW, I bought a second one because it is such a great deal. more

    dirty enjoyment
this revolver is only for those that understand shooting blackpowder. and that is "cleaning it is no fun". but shooting it is a hoot. my son and i took it shooting and had a blast (pun intended). the first time... loading went a lot slower than the remainder of the loads, but we soon got the hang of it. i recommend watching some of the plentiful videos on the internet as schooling in loading. i can't complain about the starter kit either, it's helpful in getting you lined out on what is needed to enjoy shooting this well made pistol more

    Better than expected!
Wow! From opening the box to shooting the gun, I was very pleased. The quality and workmanship of the revolver was much better than I expected. The gun looks much better than the price reflects. When I took it to the sho...oting range, I was shooting at a 2 inch red round dot at 25 yards. The very first shot out of the gun was 1/2" high from dead center. I don't save very many targets from the range, but I'm saving this one. If you have been thinking of getting a black powder revolver, you can't go wrong here. more

    The real deal
Before I bought this pistol, I thought black powder guns were just a novelty. Turns out, these guns are well made firearms and when properly loaded, they are as good as any modern firearm. The 1858 New Army is a good sol...id pistol and works very well. Although not as powerfull as as some modern large bore handguns, you wouldn't want to find yourself on the wrong end of one. It has made shooting fun again. In the 5 months I have had it, I have fired just short of 1000 rounds with no problems. Great gun. more

    More accurate than expected!
Finally got to shoot the pistol. It is more accurate than I expected. My LEO brother was impressed too as he shot 5 shots in a 1 inch group at 20 yds.My groups were more like 2".I got 2 extra cylinders, 45 colt conv...ersion and the Cheyenne holster, and Laramie drop belt. (The 45 colt is awesome.) Quality of bluing and finish is excellent, brass trigger guard is good, no sharp edges as others have noted. #10 caps fit perfect. #11 caps were loose. As others suggested Trip 7 FFFG powder really rocks. The starter kit is just that a starter kit. Some complain about the price, but top of the line items will really run up a bill. My only complaint on the kit is the flask is hard to load. A small funnel would have been nice. more

Right out of the box this remmie is beautiful, I have found no flaws in workmanship as others have described. Perhaps I just recieved the best one, I also ordered the spare cylinder slips right in not a problem, watch th...e loading lever as it will hold cylinder out until it is properly positioned. 1858 new army .44
i would really give this gun a 4.5 but its a 4 or a 5 so i gave it a 4. i was attracted to this pistol from clint eastwood movies and i also got to fire a black powder rifle at the shooting range one day. i was hooked ev...er since because i was firing a .22 high standard pistol and it wasn't fun compared to the preparation in loading of a black powder. the quality could be better on these pistols because the nipples were smashed, warped, and mushroomed sideways after firing 130 shots. the hammer tends to mushroom on the nipples which requires a little maintenance with a file and the reloading kit with the pistol is a good deal. 4.5 all the way and you can't go wrong! more

    Very Nice Pistol
This is my first 'owned' BP pistol; and I like it! Fit and finish are very nice; bluing is complete, deep and rich. Not perfect, but VG overall. I need to pull the triggerguard and polish out some tool-marks on the insid...e circumference - doesn't effect the operation (not finger-gouging) but it just isn't as pretty as the rest of the gun. Stocks fit very well and are a nice color out-of-the box; they've gotten better after rubbing out a little "accidental over-oiling" when cleaning. Shoots a little high and the trigger let-off is heavy (compared to my K-frame and N-frame S&W's), but that's what files are for! SA cocking force is on a par with both of my DA Smith's. more

    Great Product
Took this out for the first time. I'm a new black powder shooter, so I had to read up on it and educate myself on how everything works. I had a great experience. We went out on a trap shoot in Missouri with the shotguns ...and I took this along to let the family and friends break it in with me, and we had a blast. It was a lot more accurate than I thought it would be! I could hit better with this than I could with my brother's $1,000 HK .45 semi-auto. There is no recoil, it kicks like a .22 pistol, but a loud smoky boom when it goes off though. I got the short barrel version of this, and I have been very happy with that decision. A couple of caps fell off when I shot once, but it was due to the cap loader I was using. When I loaded the caps by hand, never had an issue, very reliable. It cleaned up easily too. For the quality and the value, I would recommend this to anyone. more

    Great revolver so far
I received my 1858 yesterday via UPS. I can't say that I've had a chance to fire it yet, but upon examination, I can say that it is a beautiful piece. The finish is superb (no noticeable scratches or machine/tool marks),... the action functions smoothly, the tolerances seem very tight regarding cylinder/barrel alignment, and overall the revolver looks excellent--it would make a great display piece. more

1858 New Army .44 Caliber Revolver w/ Starter Kit
Item was in stock and received within 5 days! First, let me say that I was very impressed with the fit and finish of the revolver. The front sight was very-slightly bent to the left but, hardly affects shot placement. It... will take some time to become comfortable using the sights as the rear sight is a simple groove in the top of the receiver and the front sight is a very thin, vertical blade. The lead balls that come in the Starter Kit are very inconsistent in their roundness and I achieved much better groups using Hornady .454 diameter .44 caliber lead balls (product #6070), which by the way, weigh approximately 140 grains. Best of three, 6-shot groups measured 2 1/4" (with one flyer), @ 25 yards using approximately 18.2 grains of Pyrodex P measured with one fill of a Lee Dipper - size 1.6cc but, this is my first outing with the gun and further load development will be necessary. A NOTE OF CAUTION: The nipples are set at a slight angle away from the centerline of the cylinder (tilted towards the outside of the cylinder). You MUST align the nipple wrench with the angle to obtain the correct purchase/torque or you will most likely damage or break your nipple wrench as I did! HINT: I put a very small dab of Super Lube grease on the threads, which makes removal much easier. I would not order the combo Gun w/Starter Kit again as the items in the kit are not top-of-the-line and most of them are not really necessary. The gun itself is currently available ON SALE. Regardless of the minor problems noted, I am very pleased with the gun, the price and the quick delivery and I will most likely order a different 1858 New Army model in the near future but, ONLY FROM CABELA'S! more

    Display Looks
My first BP pistol. It looks like it should be on display. I'm glad I didn't get the brass model. It's a blast to shoot. I bought the target model and am impressed. It shoots more accurate than some cartridge pistols. It... really puts you back in time. more

    Old West .44 Caliber Rvolver
I really enjoy my New .44 Cal black powder Revolver. My first Old West collectors item, I plan on trying it out when I go to Washington to vacation a few days with my son & grandkids.I also like to collect old black ...powder rifles, just for display and one of my hobbies. They sure look nice mounted on the wall, something to talk about and show off my collection of old anteques....Ralph more

    My Favorite Pistol
As a collector and shooter of black powder revolvers I must say the 1858 New Army is by far my favorite pistol. The full frame design is far superior to the Colt style revolvers. It is much stronger and allows for quick ...cylinder swaps. On a good day I can get off 12 target shots in 8 seconds with this pistol and a spare cylinder. I have fired mine many times with over 50 grains of American Pioneer fffg with no problems and never a misfire with a pinched #11 magnum cap. It is very accurate with 35 to 40 grains of powder and a patched .451 swaged ball to 50 yards. If you're going to buy a black powder pistol make this one your first choice. You won't believe the quality of this replica for the incredible price. more

I purchased this one a little over a year ago, it's a fun shooter. Shortly after I got it, I noticed that it needed to be pointed down to roll the cylinder. After a complete disassembly, I discovered the the spring on th... cylinder hand had broken, I ordered a replacement through Dixie Gun Works, and after a little "smithing" had it working beautifully again. Don't get me wrong, I get a hoot and a holler outta shootin' this beauty. BTW for a little more realism, ditch the pyrodex and load REAL black powder. I load wad over powder with well "greased" balls. gotta have your balls greased you know, says so in the video. YE HAWW!! more

    Great value
I bought the blued version with walnet grip as a present for a brother, a retired 82 Airborne Army vet, along with a US Calvery holster, belt, bullet pouch, and spare cylinder. I also got a 45 LC conversion cylinder, whi...ch is all we've used so far at the range. I consider the weapon to be a work of high calibre industrial art. You could pay much more for much less beauty. The .44 1858 clicks on all levels- shooting, history, and artwork. more

Gun yes - starter kit no
Since receiving the (Pietta) 1858 Remington New Army .44 revolver I have had the opportunity for two range sessions. The gun is reasonably well made and a pleasure to shoot. With a little practice and load develoment it ...has no trouble hitting the black at 25 yards. Switching from .451 to .454 round balls definitely improved accuracy to that of most modern guns. I have opted for over the powder wads rather than applying grease in front of the ball. At about 36 rounds per session I had little trouble with fouling except the center pin which is a long known issue with this design. CCI #10 caps stay put and work fine. Nobel #11 caps tend to fall off unless you pinch them first. The gun tends to develop a little rust quickly so I recommend a full disassembly, which is not difficult, when cleaning. A Google search will produce good disassembly and cleaning advice. I have been shooting black powder and have not yet tried Pyrodex. It may prove to be a bit easier to clean. If you have any black powder accessories on hand skip the starter kit. It contains a plastic flask with no dispensing release, just a rubber cap on the spout. The kit also contains less than a standard size package of balls and wads. Buy accessories "a la carte" and get a metal flask with the correct size (+/- 24 grains) measuring spout. A spare cylinder and an aftermarket external loader helps make it more pleasurable to shoot. This is my first black powder revolver and I look forward to adding an 1861 Colt Navy .36 as my next acquisition. more

    Nice revolver for the money
I am satisfied with the revolver and starter kit. The finish quality is a little less than I expected, but the revolver is solid and seems to be well machined. My only complaint is the couple of burrs on the trigger and ...guard, and the caps were a difficult size to find in my area. more

    First Blackpowder Firearm
Even though I have been shooting nearly 40 years, every time I ended up with a blackpowder firearm through a trade I would move it along without ever firing it. On a whim, I decided to try out blackpowder and with the st...arter kit this seemed to be a great bargain. Well, the quality of the firearm, the enclosed documentation and the starter kit made my first blackpowder outing so enjoyable I now have three blackpowder revolvers and enjoy them at every opportunity.Thank you Cabela's for offering this excellent product. more

    Great Place to Start!
The pistol is great. The pistol is a great shooter. Its a new gun, so the hammer is a little stiff. But the trigger is fine as is. Make sure you read the manual and use #10 caps.
