    The 1858 Remington
It was shipped in very good order. Got it in, cleaned up the oil, installed the stainless steel nipples, and before range time, fired 6 caps. Loaded it with 30 grains Hogdon P, a wad and the .451 balls. Closed off the cy...linder with lard; fired and functioned beautifully. The best part; this revolver is a tack driver at close range, manageable recoil, billows of smoke-and pretty powerful. It'll get the job done. The fit and finish was excellent. This appears to be a durable firearm, in metallurgy and manufacture, superior to the original. I am very pleased with it. more

I own 3 of these revolvers, all purchased from Cabelas. I have the regular 8" barrel, the "Sheriffs Model" and the Target Model with adjustable sights.

Pietta 1858 New Army .44 Cal.
I received delivery of your Pietta 1858 New Model Army this morning. I purchased it from Cabela's. I couldn't be more impressed. This is the second Pietta revolver I have purchased, the other being a 1861 Navy. This one,... however is even more amazing. The fit and finish are incredible. Very nice lustre to the bluing. The trigger is crisp. Upon receiving it, I went to work cleaning the preservative oil from the piece and then lubricated every part. The action is smooth. At the range I found the point of aim to be point of impact with 25 grains of FFFG black powder. My compliments to everybody that touched this piece. more

    Great product
I recently purchased this pistol at the Cabelas in Augusta, GA. The fit and finish are outstanding. Good action and very accurate for a BP pistol. This will go well in my impression of an early war officer in both Union ...and Confederate forces. more

    1858 Revolver
Ordered the revolver, after having much fun with the 1851 Colt Navy replica by the same company. Wanted a black powder pistol with a steel frame, and people pointed me to this gem. After ordering, it said it would take 1...4 days, but it actually came much earlier, to my surprised and joy. Got to go out and fire it that next week on a Friday, and have enjoyed it ever since. more

    Wow
Bought the Pietta 1858 New Army .44 cal revolver and took it to the range the next day. Wow! Lots more fun to shoot than any centerfire handguns I own. Started at 25 yards and got great accuracy. First cylinder produced ...a 6 inch pattern which with practice will get better. Love the look and feel too. more

1858 Remington New Army is excellent

    pietta 44 bp
Bought this item as my first bp firearm, when I received it I was very happy with the fit and finish of the product. It seems very well made and I am pleased with enough that I bought the same gun in a .36 cal and it is ...also very nice. I wished Cabela's carried the Pietta 1863 as I am in the market for one of those also. Thanks Cabela's more

Shoots straight and handles stout loads
I bought this weapon in person at a Cabelas in Rogers, Minnesota and right out of the box it shoots straight on at 25 yards. Handles .454 balls perfectly and the ramrod went very easy after the first plunge. Using Triple... Se7en in 30 grain loads, it does very well for target shooting. Highly recommended. My only issue is for some reason the trigger and cylinder lock spring mysteriously broke in the fours hours after cleaning of the weapon. more

    Picky, experienced user.
I bought this, with the extra cylinder. I took it apart for cleaning, and some deburr work. All the 12 nipples came out just fine. (a complaint in the bad reviews, which I read before I bought this.) Everything was nicel...y coated in shipping oil, so there was no rust. Everything got a cleaning in hot, soapy water in my ultrasonic cleaner, rinsed, and dried with an old blow dryer. All sharp edges on the stamped parts were hand polished with a fine Arkansas stone. This does wonders for the helping the internal working parts operate smoothly. I expected to need to do this. I wasn't disappointed. A small chamfer on the nipples made them much easier to put back, with a dab of moly grease on the threads. The manual does not specify #10 or #11 caps. This should have been addressed, so 4 stars.Shooting: I use a modified loading stand to load each cylinder out of the gun. I prefer Pyrodex-P FFFG over black powder. I can shoot more rounds between cleanings, and It takes about 15% fewer grains. .454 Hornady balls over a single lubed patch works well. I snug the patch down nice and flat over the powder. 23 grains seems to be an optimum load for accuracy, so far, after 96 rounds.Kudos to Cabelas for including the extra instruction manual, and for the great sales price. If you're considering buying your first black powder gun, this is an excellent first choice. Go for it, have fun, above all, be safe. more

    A Great Buy!
The Pietta 1858 New Army revolver is a quality firearm. The fit and finish are excellent. If you're thinking about getting into cap and ball pistols, this is a great choice.I've enjoyed firearms my entire life and was in...timidated about trying a black powder pistol. Boy, was I wrong! While the loading and cleaning process can be time consuming, it's a lot of FUN! Especially if you're a Civil War buff. Firing it takes you back to a simpler time. Even my teenage grandchildren have enjoyed shooting it, which kind of surprised me. It's just fun for all ages. more

    New to Black Powder
My son and I are both experienced hunters and shooters but had never shot black powder until I gave my son the 1858 revolver for Christmas this year. After reviewing the loading and safety instructions included with the ...gun, we went about firing the pistol at our gun club during the holiday break wondering if the loading time and attention required for black powder shooting would be worth the wait. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the procedure was easy and most importantly the gun was extremely accurate at our 15 yard shooting distance. After shooting several rounds our first day we are looking forward to the next black powder outing soon ! more

    Exceptional among BP revolvers!
I have been shooting black powder since 1977 and the 1858 stands out among the revolvers. This is one solid piece of hardware and right out of the box, they shoot fantastic! I own both the 8" and 5 1/2" models ...and they are solid revolvers, deadly accurate, beautiful to look at and work with, and so easy to clean. I use Pyrodex P, 30 grains with a .454 ball and #10 Remington caps and group at 2 1/2" to 3" at 25 yards. I own Colt replicas also, but I just love the feel of solidness of the Remington. Thanks to Cabela's for carrying these treasured firearms! more

    Remington '58
I love my Colt 1860 New Army, but have struggled with unpinning the barrel to remove the cylinder for loading or cleaning. So I decided to try the Remington 1858 repro, as I'd heard they were easier to break down-and it ...is. A very handsome and substantial pistol-she's a handful alright! Excellent but needs a quick fix
The fit, finish, trigger and accuracy were above expectations. Be careful with anything under a full load as the ramming rod hits the frame before fully seating the ball. I have an extra cylinder and checked this careful...ly...it won't fully seat the ball under, say, 20 grains. A quick filed notch where it touches easily fixes this. Great accurate gun and 'fanning' the hammer is a BLAST ! more

I shoot black powder a good bit and purchased this because it looked like it would be fun to shoot, I got home and started shooting and it really surprised me in the accuracy field, the first 6 shots were in a 5 1/2"...; group at 15 yards free hand and the second six were at about the same at about 20 yards. Shooting History
I really like my new Pietta Remington 1858 NEW MODEL ARMY .44 cal. It makes me aware that I'm shooting a firearm that was part of our American Heritage. Best Pietta Yet ...and they all are Great
I purchased this 1858 New Army 44 at the opening of the new store location in Fort Mill, SC. Already put 75 rounds thru the pistol, Shoots GREAT straight out of the box, Did a wipe down of the shipping oil before shootin...g, but no issues with the gun. Put all of the shots in a tight circle. I had already purchased a Pietta 1860 Navy in the Greenville, SC store prior to this purchase and it also is a good shooter out of the box. One Great Revolver!
This Pietta Remington New Army 44 Cap and Ball Revolver offered by Cabela's was my first introduction to the world of black powder. I had researched it out while studying the Civil War. At the range it is very fun to sho...ot, but takes patience to load. I use a fairly light load of 25 grains of 3F Pyrodex P, a .454 Swagged lead ball, then bore butter over the ball to thwart chain fires. In my numerous range visits I have never had one yet, knock on wood. This reproduction is very well made, but needed a little polishing around the inner pieces. I highly recommend this Pietta Remington New Army 44 to anyone interested in black powder firearms. With just 25 grains the recoil is very light and it's large grip gives it stability for it's weight. Cabela's usually carries all the necessary items for the black powder revolvers they sell at reasonable prices. So you can pick up everything you need there, then head straight to the range and have fun. more

    Very Nice
Haven't shot black powder in decades and decided to get back into it. The Remington 1858 has always been my favorite and the Pietta was no disappointment. The fit and finish is very well done. Cylinder indexing is exact.... My first trip to the range, I used Goex powder, and since I could not find .454 balls, I used .451. I see no reason to change now. They seated very well with a nice little lead ring left behind. First shot, hit the bull's-eye and all of my follow up shots stayed within a 2" grouping at 15 yards. Must be beginner's luck, but it's got me looking at another Pietta to keep it company. more

    I Like It
Pietta has done it right. My revolver is a quality example. It has none of the issues complained about by some of the lower ratings. There are no casting voids, no stuck nipples or blemishes in the bluing. The interior o...f the trigger guard is left relatively un-polished , No big deal. Cylinder bores are all .447 and they index perfectly as does the rammer. You can't go wrong for the price! I'll probably get more Pietta products based on this piece. more

Pietta Model 1858 New Army .44 Caliber Revolver
I bought this revolver this week and its the first time I ever experienced black powder shooting. After watching youtube video's on loading it, firing it and cleaning it I went out to buy some black powder and caps and g...ave it a try. Let me tell you I was impressed. Right out of the box the revolver is beautiful. Excellent craftsmanship. I loaded Prodex P in it, used the wads because all I could find locally was .451 balls, and put #11 caps on it which do need a slight pinch.I aimed the gun and the first shot, nothing. I looked and the cap was askewed and had to be replaced. I aimed again and wow, now thats a gun! Fired five more times and it was great. Time to reload.Clean up was easy with hot water like they showed in the Youtube video's. I cleaned right up. Oiled it lightly and its ready for some fun shooting tomorrow. If you never shot black powder before, get ready for some real fun and with Pyrodex P, it did not get that dirty. One last thing, Cabela's I highly recommend for purchasing this gun. Their shipping was faster than estimated. When I ordered it on line they said it would arrive on a Friday and it showed up on a Tuesday. I will be buying more guns and accessories from Cabela soon. more

    Remarkably nice pistol
My daughter got me this for my birthday and to say the least I am delighted. The gun came with a fine film of oil which I removed when cleaning it for the first time. As I cleaned it I found the quality to be exceptional...ly good. Aside from the cylinder pin being tight and difficult to remove everything was a perfect fit. My son-in-law and I went to the range to try it out. Loaded with Pyrodex .44 cal pellets and the lead balls and wadding that came with the gun I found that #11 primers work well but the primer loader is worthless. The gun is quite powerful, about the same as a .45 acp, and amazingly accurate. I was able to shoot one inch groups at 25 yards and blast all the way through a 2X4 with ease. Not bad for fixed iron sights. The whole BP thing is a lot of fun. I think I will get a Walker Colt replica next. more

    Great beginner BP revolver
Purchased a BP rifle last year and really enjoyed shooting BP so I thought I would give a BP revolver a try. The 1858 was my choice based on watching YouTube videos, reading reviews, and ultimately price. The main featur...e that sold me was the reported ease in which cylinders can be swapped which this revolver does indeed deliver on. The one thing I wish I had know more about prior to buying is the availability of #10 and #11 percussion caps. The gun is supposed to work with #10 caps and after hours of calls and online searching, I was able to finally find some CCI #10's. They fit perfectly on the gun I received. Availability initially appeared to be so limited (aka non-existent) that I went ahead and ordered the 45LC conversion so I could actually use the gun (basically doubling the price). Loading the gun was straight forward. I used 25 gr Pyrodex-P, Cabelas lubed wad, Hornady .451 shot, and the #10 CCI percussion caps. Worked great and unbelievably accurate. The conversion cylinder also worked without issues but the boom of black powder is far more satisfying than the 45LC. Bottom line: if you can find the caps, this is a fun and accurate BP revolver. more

    Excellent revolver
I debated buying a Pietta for 2 months due to their past quality issues. But this was definitely a great purchase. Fit and finish are excellent. One tiny blemish in the left grip that can only be noticed with close inspe...ction. Very slight difference in wood tone between the grips, but better then most 2 piece stocks/grips on much higher priced guns I have. Lockup is solid, timing looks to be right on. Trigger and hammer pull are stiff, on par with all factory revolvers. more

Excellent 1858 Remington New Army 44 Reproduction
Upon receiving this fine Pietta reproduction of an 1858 Remington New Army 44 offered by Cabela's, I quickly gave it a thorough inspection. Although there is a very minor issue where the cylinder just misses lining up wi...th the ram rod when loading, it is overall a very well crafted pistol. I have done some extensive online research into Pietta and a few other Italian reproduction fire arms makers and found that Pietta does an excellent job, and their quality control has become much better over the years. Are there better and more refined 1858 Remington reproduction pistols? In my opinion yes, but as I wanted a low cost range pistol that is just for fun and plinking, this model offered by Cabela's is perfect, and Cabela's has most of the accoutrements for it usually in stock The hammer/trigger action is fairly smooth, the cylinder rotates well and freely and the bluing is consistent throughout. Overall I am very pleased with Pietta's 1858 Remington New Army 44 reproduction, and look forward to acquiring a few more black powder fire arms in the future at Cabela's. more

    Nice Gun
Just got back from the range. The 1858 preformed wonderfully. This was my first experience with a cap and ball revolver, so it too me a while to get the hang of it. It was a bit difficult to ram the balls all the way dow...n on the first cylinder. Also had a bit of trouble putting on the caps with the straight line capper in the starter kit. As a result, a couple of caps failed to ignite the charge. However, after the first cylinder the problems went away and I really enjoyed the revolver. It has very little recoil and is very accurate. I was easily able to put shots in the 9 ring from 25 feet when I took my time. more

    Amazing Craftmanship
I'd owned a BP long long ago, & it was a real HUNK OF JUNK, yet I wanted another BP Handgun, so, after reading MOST of the reviews I selected the 1858, which is the proper definition of a "Hog Leg". I also ...selected the "Black Powder Pellets" for a more even load of BP in the hand gun. Also "More Importantly get a "Skinny Ruler" so you can measure the inside depth of the Drum Cylinder, from that you'll subtract the length of the BP Pellet, the Wadding & the Lead Ball that you'll be shooting. I've found that the BP Pellet is MUCH CLEANER & EASIER TO HANDLE THAN THE BP itself. The 1858 that I received is extremely accurate & I LOVE IT. Always remember to remove the SLAG & the NUB, THAT'S THE PART THAT STICKS UP FROM THE MOLD FILL PORT "when the ball was liquid & poured into the mold". ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, WASH YOUR HAND AFTER YOU'VE FINISHED CLEANING OR LOADING YOUR FIREARM, I always use leather gloves when I shoot my revolver, that protects my hands from the explosive discharge & possible shrapnel "if you don't clean up the ball" prior to shooting it. HAPPY BP SHOOTING!!!!!!!!!!! more

    Totally Underestimated Cabela's!
At first I received a faulty 1858 pietta because the hammer kept jamming so I was frustrated and sent it back. Anxiously I emailed Cabela's almost daily and right away they exchanged the item and gave me FREE 2 DAY AIR S...HIPPING on my newly exchanged pietta 1858. The gun is beautiful and highly crafted. Can't wait to take it to the firing range. Totally recommend this gun. THANKS CABELA'S FOR BEING AWESOME!!! more

Internal parts are rough & need filing
When my 1858 revolver arrived, I could not even cock the hammer back. I managed to get the cylinder out and took the gun totally apart. I found very rough edges on the internal moving parts. So I used a very fine file an...d stone to smooth them. I reassembled the gun and now it functions perfectly. It is a great gun for the price. more

    Pietta is not Pedersoli
This gun had lots of sharp edges and fouled so badly when fired that the cylinder would not turn, After much work with a file I have solved the problem. The cylinder was too tight to the barrel and the holding pin was ro...ugh. After lots of work, it finally functions. It does take #10 caps, NOT #11 as stated. Starter kit is needed for the nipple wrench alone. All in all this is not the good workmanship I've learned to expect from Pedersoli. If you like to tinker this is your gun. more

    Great for the money
Not very many bad things to say about this piece. Just two very small sharp places on the hammer. And a small place on the front of the cylinder that didnt get blued. Its not a big deal to me so it will not be returned. ...I plan on getting a spare cylinder, and already looking for a cowboy rig for it. more

    My Confederate 1851 Colt
I am new to BP shooting and I was browsing everything Cabela had to offer. I decided on the Confederate Colt 1851. It isn't historically correct, but for an introductory pistol it is awesome. I took it apart the day UPS ...delivered it and thoroughly cleaned it, removing the wedge was not the ordeal I thought it would be, a quick decisive tap and it was loose, don't forget to loosen the set screw. I finally got to shoot it and it was a gas! I shot up the 30 shots that came in the starter kit, using all the items in the starter kit, measuring power, lubed wads, the shot and sealer, then the cap and finally ... BANG! It was awesome! I was on the range for 2 hours to shoot 30 rounds .. lol. My pistol fired flawlessly, I was surprised at how little recoil there was, compared to my 1911A1, even with a full 24 grains of powder. Now cleaning is a whole other process! Torn my 1851 down, soaked and scrubbed it, worried about the corrosion, but it is fine. Itching to go shoot it again. Looking at other Cabela BP offerings. more

Loading lever out alignment & grips warped....
I purchase this as an in-store pick-up. I only checked to determine if it was the correct revolver that I ordered. I didn't open the Pietta's box & plastic bag to examine if all was well within the box. It wasn't. I ...loaded the revolver using a Cabela's loading stand (which is much better than it's reviews), so I didn't notice that the loading-lever is so out of align that it can't be used to load the revolver. Also, the grips are warped. The wood on this gun's grips seems very porous & very rough (i.e, very unfinished). I had none of these problems with a previous revolver purchase of the same make & model. I marked this as not recommending this purchase, but that's just on the basis of "Caveat Emptor" principle; however, given my my most recent purchase, I'm highly ambivalent about recommend this item for purchase. Awsome value, great shooter
I wanted one of these for awile and finally bought one and Im not disapointed. It has a nice finish, tight lockup and perfect timing.I ordered an extra cylinder and a box of .454 round balls. Remington No. 10 caps fit grea...t but no. 11's will work if you pinch them a little before you put them on.I bought felt wads but havnt used them. I used 22 grains fffg then a round ball and then I packed the ends of the cylinder with Crisco. This load seemed to be very very accurate at 25 yards.Make sure you order a nipple wrench, its not included and a neccesity for proper maintenance and safety. You wouldnt want to shoot it with a loose nipple. You must remove the nipples for proper cleaning. The Ted Cash nipple wrench for pistols works excellent. more

    A mixed review
I just purchased two of these revolvers. The two are only 10 serial numbers apart. The difference in final fit and finish between these two is significant. One of them I would easily rate a 5 overall. The other I'd have ...to rate a 3 overall. It will take a fair bit of work to get the second revolver up to the smooth reliable action of the first. Still for the price, I am happy with the purchase and eager to get out to the range to shoot these. The revolver needing work had the screws seriously over torqued, and I will be replacing a couple of the screws where the slots were damaged during disassembly.. The action is also not smooth or quite properly timed. A bit of careful filing off burrs and some polishing has significantly improved things, but I may yet take it to a gun smith to have it dialed in. more

I am not disappointed.I ordered it online and was a little nervous about not being able to handle the gun in person before buying ...it. I received a high quality BP pistol. It is pretty much what I expected. Very good quality at a very good on sale price. The fit and finish is very good. Before I ever shot it, I fully disassembled and cleaned the gun. Polished every part of the action till ...it was smooth as silk. Then I polished the inside of each chamber and the bore with J-B bore cleaner and bore finish. Took it to the range, loaded it with 30 gr. of Goex, a lubed wad, and Hornady .454 ball. Shot 4 inches low at 25 yards. Carefully filed a little at a time off the front sight taking sighters all the while till I was right on at 25 yards. Easy 2 inch group when I do my part right. Easy gun to work on and fun to shoot. Better than my last one
I no longer mailorder Piettas. The ones I have received in the mail have had annoying issues. Having said that, I inspected two of them at Cabelas during a super sale event three days ago. One was great, and one had a la...rge cylinder-to-barrel gap. I purchased the good one due to the sale. I recommend inspecting them at a store before you buy one. Worth Buying
I bought the 5.5, enjoyed shooting it, then bought the 7 in for a set, then bought another 5 in when it was on sale for a XMAS present. Finish is avg, needed some fine tuning with a stone on the burrs, but for the $$ dec...ent buy. Reasonably accurate for my BP pistol skill level (fun to shoot). 45 rounds, 2 FTEs due to operator error. Recommend getting a Revolver-Cylinder Loading Stand, the arm on the pistol isn't strong enough for extended use (my opinion). more

    1858 Pietta SIMPLY FANTASTIC
Found the sale price online and drove the 80 miles for one. I was just in the store last week and got a 1860 (sweet) and had to have this 1858. Fred was the sales person and he really knows his stuff. Once again the help...fulness of the sale people is top rate. Fred got me not just one pistol to look at but three to look over. The 1858 Pietta is a wonderful arm, the bluing is top noch, machining perfect, locks are tight, balance perfect, and no one can beat the prices and service. I did not get to shoot this revolver yet- but my Pietta 1860 shoots 2" groups and the 1858 will too--I KNOW. Just take them apart and clean them up real good. Hodgdon 30 grain pellet, a cookie and a .451 ball. Honestly these new Pietta's shoot better then many center fire pistols, and they look and feel great. more

Pietta Model 1858 New Army .44
The Pietta Model 1858 New Army .44 Caliber Revolver, is the first cap & ball I have experienced. The finish and craftsmanship is good and it handles well. I purchased the Hornady swaged .451 cal. Round balls and lube...d wool wads at the same time, accuracy is better than expected and no Greasy mess.A well made handgun and fun to shoot, a very good value for the money. more

    Better Late than Never
I was mildly irritated to see reviews of folks that ordered their guns after mine and received them, but only mildly as!!!!!!! When I called customer service, (repeatedly daily) I always got a very friendly sales person,... right here is the U.S.A. The last supervisor I talked to located the SNAFU and arranged for a perfect set of Consecutive Serial guns to be delivered in a matter of days. I have dissembled, cleaned, and oiled them, and as a contractor was amazed at the fit and finish especially given the price. Both have smooth crisp actions, with one trigger pull 1.5# heavier than the other.I have not shot them yet as they are off now to a gunsmith for .45 colt Konverter's, loading ports and Richard-Mason ejectors :-) In the process now of loading up a bunch of Black Powder 45 Colt Cowboy Cartridges with my own hand made big lube bullets, cant wait to get the guns back and shoot them. more

Pietta 1858 Remington New Army Replica
I purchased my Pietta 1858 Remington New Army a few weeks ago. The finish and fitment of the revolver is excellent. I have so far shot apprx 120 rnds through it. I use # 10 Remington caps(which fit perfectly) the Cabella...s lubed wads and 25-35 grains of Alliant Black Mz with .454 balls(perfect fitment, shaves a ring of lead for a tight seal). Accuracy is good at 25-50yrds(I shoot at 8in steel plates). I am meticulous with my cleaning of the gun and so far haven't had a single misfire I fired 70 rnds only having to wipe and lube the ball pressing mechanism and the cylinder support rod every 25 rnds or so... Overall I am very pleased with the firearm. more

    FORGIVE ME SAMUEL COLT
Ditto to about all the reviews below me, not much I can add. This was the first Cabelas BP revolver that I bought some years ago and several more since. I use #10 caps as they stay on the nipple after recoil. I did read ...up on all the info I could get my hands on since this was my first BP handgun. I was absolutely amazed the first time I fired it, very accurate, dependable, and had a smooth action. I have shot it many times and it still looks like new and locks up tight. I was going to buy the .45 conversion kit but for the cost just decided to buy another 1858 with the brass frame, instead. I love my Pietta replica Colt 1860 and 1851 but this model is the best by far for strength and faster reloading so be good to yourself and buy one.... You won't regret it, I didn't. Awsome Purchase
This pistol is everything they claim it to be and then some. I have had zero problems with it, and the fit and finish are unbelievable. I also own an 1851 Navy, and the Remington is a thousand times more reliable. The ca...ps don't get jammed up and stop the cylinder the way they do on the navy Colt. Also, the high blade front sight is much superior. You hit to point of aim right out of the box. No Kentucky windage necessary. In addition, removing the cylinder is a breeze compared to the Colt models which need to be basically disassembled in order to remove the cylinder. Not trying to knock the Colts, I love them too. Just offering the comparison. But in conclusion, it's a great gun for a great price. And paired with a Pedersoli powder flask, you can't go wrong. more

    44 cal Bp 1858 Revolver
I am very happy with both of the Pietta 44's I have purchased. I got the second revolver about 1 year from the first and have had no problems exchanging the cylinders or using a .45 Colt conversion cylinder in either of ...them. They both will shoot to p.o.a. and the fit and finish is actually something to be proud of. I love shooting these in black powder mode, but it is more difficult to clean them well. The .45 Colt conversion cylinder makes it easier and fast to load and shoot and requires less tedious cleaning. Overall this is an excellent product and I will be purchasing one of these with the 5 1/2 '' barrel soon with another conversion cylinder. more

1858 Pietta New Army 44 Blackpowder
Just received one each of these, the 8" barrel and the 5-1/2" barrel. I honestly can't believe the level of quality for the price Cabela's is selling them for! Granted this is a discount sale price, but these p...istols would be impressive even at their normal retail price. I have not taken either one out to shoot yet, but I have little doubt they'll function perfectly. The action on each is so smooth, and lockup is so tight, I'm really amazed. Great Guns!!
Came in the mail today after a few weeks backordered - well worth the wait, IMO. Very nicely done, all parts fit well and tight. Using one of the guides about tuning or slicking up the 1858, I completely disassembled and... inspected this revolver, preparing to make a few tuning adjustments. About all I had to do was clean the shipping oil off the weapon. Again, very nicely done, very tight weapon (tight as in, all parts fit smooth and uniformly/properly). If I had paid full price for this, I'd probably rate it a 9.5 because of a small blemish on the barrel, not noticeale until you notice it ;). Consider the sale price and the qualit of this weapon, I'd rate it a 9.9. If it shoots as well as it looks and is manufactured, I'll be very, very pleased!!! more

Terrific Revolver That Shoots as Good as it Looks
This is the perfect Black Powder Revolver for accurate shooting fun. Although it is black powder, and I have fired it a few times using black powder, I bought two conversion cylinders to use in it and now I shoot Cowboy ....45 ACP's with it. I found that using black powder is fun to do but, it takes a while to load the cylinders and then fire the gun. Plus, it's a bad idea to carry around loaded and capped cylinders since accidental firing could happen (but never to me). In less than a few seconds, I can change the conversion cylinders after firing one complete .45 loaded cylinder and continue shooting. I realize that black powder loyalists won't like this but, I found that using conversion cylinders is much more convenient--plus, I don't have to put up with all the smoke after each shot fired. more

Haven't had a review of these New Army's lately, so I'll do a quick one. Got a pair and they are the nicest Pietta's I've ever gotten. Very few burrs or sharp edges needing attention. Beautiful Gun
My 44 Rem reproduction arrived the other day. After reading all the positive reviews I had to have one. I love American western history, and this gun was used extensively in the Civil War and to tame the west. I was like... a kid at Christmas when I got the box and opened it. I was not disappointed- the revolver was wrapped in plastic and after removing it and wiping off the oil- there it was! My own piece of American history. It is excellent if fit and finish just as the reviews indicate. Movement is tight and precise. This is a heavy gun, and I cannot imagine having two of these beasts strapped and tied down. I am very pleased with my purchase and cannot wait to get to the rang and sling some lead. Thanks Cabela's for an excellent value. I do not know how you can beat the prices of other sellers of this product to the degree that you do, but I appreciate it and am a very satisfied customer.Randy more

    Nice BP Handgun!
The pistol arrived on time and well-packaged. Opening up the "box within a box", the pistol was accompanied by a couple of booklets explaining the "care & feeding" of the pistol. The pistol itself... was fully assembled and in perfect working order. I recently used it at a Civil War reenacting event (firing blanks: black powder, cream of wheat, Cisco). It functioned perfectly with a light, crisp action. Removing and replacing the cylinder was a breeze with no tendency to bind (unlike a couple of other "New Army" pistols by another manufacturer that I have some experience with). I am really looking forward to taking this pistol out to a live fire range soon. So, overall, I am very pleased with this pistol and the great price and service I got from Cabela's! more

    Great Shooter
I have 30 years of experience with firearms, 20 as a professional firearms examiner, and have had hands on experience with a very wide variety of firearms. When the first repro Colt BP revolvers started arriving from Ita...ly, Pietta was not really a contender, and even developed a rather shaky reputation. However, this is a company that clearly learned from its mistakes, and has gone from strength to strength. The 1858 Remington I bought is well finished, with a good grade of wood for the grips, and decent overall fit and finish. I just use mine for recreational plinking, but with modern metals and manufacturing processes, I say with no fear of contradiction, the Pietta replicas are spirit of the original, but better as a shooter (durability, not fit and finish, per se) than even an "NRA 100%" original. more

    Great 6 gun
I purchased my 1858 New Army from Cabela's last November 2010, and finally got a chance to shoot it at the local gun range. The range officer and several of the shooters came over to see what I had. It is everything I wa...nted it to be. Great color and workmanship. I used 454 balls and 30 grains of Pyrodex pellets. I also puchased two more black powder cylinders, and plan to buy a 45 cal. conversion cylinder. Thanks Cabela's for another great product. more

    Happy Birthday To Me
Bought this revolver several months ago and couldn't be more pleased. Fit, finish and overall quality are above reproach. Timing is perfect. Accuracy is on par with any "modern" design revolver. Along with the ...handgun, I also purchased two spare cylinders and a loading stand. The cylinders are exact duplicates of the original. Timing is perfect. The loading stand is a great addition. It offers increased leverage when seating slightly oversize balls. My recomended load is 30gr Triple Seven FFF, a lubed wool wad and a .454 ball. more

    I love this gun!
My wife bought this for me for Christmas because I'm a Clint Eastwood fan and I love historical guns from the old west. And I like to shoot, so a good replica makes alot of sence. If you can find and original working 185...8 Remington at a gun auction you are going to pay 1200 to 1600 bucks for it. Plus you might not want to shoot the heck out of a 150 year old gun!The gun is beautiful! The fit and finish was great! Every time I pick it up it puts a smile on my face! This is the first black powder gun I have ever owned or fired. I have put a hundred rounds through it and it just keeps getting better! Easy to load. Easy to handle. Easy to clean. Surprisingly accurate. I am hooked! I am going to buy more for sure!My wife is so smart! more

    Quality Piece
Received my Pietta 1858 this week and fired this weekend. The finish is superb with a good deep blueing, no machining marks and tight construction.I used 30 grains fffg Goex along with the .454 swagged ball. At 25 yards ...all shots where on target, and the tight construction came to the for front while shooting. It is very well balanced, and much nicer shooter than my 1858 brass framedCVA reporduction. Couldn't be more happy and have now ordered a spare cylinder. Will use during my hog hunts for close in shots or if a finishis required. more

    Black powder revolver
I ordered the 1858 new army on back order. It came in sooner than projected which was great! It was in perfect condition and higher quality than i expected. I have never shot black powder before this gun and was a snap. ...I watched the videos below the the pistal on the Cabelas website and was hitting the target out to 75 yards my first day out. They are more work than modern fire arms but more hands on and rewarding. I recommend this BP revolver to anyone how is interesting in getting started. I also purchased the round ball molds by LEE from Cabels and was easy to cast my own round balls. One tip is to buy the .451 mold in you are casting using wheel weights as the material is a little harder than the purchased round balls. The purchased round balls should be .454 for the 44 cal I recieved. Good luck! more

    1858 Black Powder Revolver
The fit and finish of the revolver is excellent. The 8" barrel provides good point ability and it is a good shooter. My only complaint is the fouling and the cleaning, but that is the nature of the beast. It is an e...xcellent historical replica and every gun collector should have a black powder revolver in their collection. Excellent Looking Gun
So far I am been very happy with what I received form Cabelas. This 1858 New Army was in excellent shape when I received it. I can’t wait to shoot. I ordered it after Christmas when it was in backorderable status so I ...could purchase it at the sale price. They let me know it would be in around Feb 24, 2011 before it would arrive. Well I got to say I was very well pleased when I received on Jan 11, 2011. Thanks Cabelas for your quick order. I am real pleased with what they have sent me. The only problem I have is locating black powder for it. All the local stores in Las Vegas, NV have stopped stocking this item. I don't want to pay for the Hazardous Meterials shipping cost from Cabelas. I was finally got some from a friend while he was in Utah. Can’t wait to shoot my new toy! Thanks Cabelas. more

    Disappointed, VERY
The day I received my Pietta 1858 Remington from Cabela's was the same day I packed it back up to return for a REFUND. Cosmetically there was a huge and obvious bright patch on the left side of the barrel and frame, whic...h contrasted dramatically with the rest of the nice and even blued finish. Functionally the trigger seemed nice, but the plunger could not align with four of the six chambers in the cylinder so that the ball would never seat correctly over the powder if I had ever dared to try and load the pistol. Was this pistol ever inspected prior to shipping from tha factory? more

    Beautiful!
When I showed this beautiful firearm to my nephew, his comment summed it up: "This is so mechanically precise, I can't believe they could machine anything this well during the Civil War." He's probably right. I... suspect Pietta does a better job than Remington did 150 years ago. The gun fires nicely with Pyrodex (the fffg equivalient)--I've put about 30 rounds through it. Great Pistol
I just recieved my 1858 and was really surprised at the quality of the revolver. I read the reviews and thought to give it a chance. I did not find any machining marks, rough spots, or timing issues. I did think that the... box that Cabelas sent it in was kind of funny though. The revolver comes in a box that just fits it and is labeled by Cabelas. They shipped it in a box that you could have put 15 of them in (you could fit a 15 CRT computer monitor in the box they shipped it in!). Tons of bubble bags but found the pistol in its small box on the bottom. Its packaging box (much smaller than the huge box it came in) was not damaged...so no problems there. As for the pistol it is wrapped in plastic and coated with oil. A manual from Pietta and another Cabelas manual with data was included. I am now looking to get another since it was the best deal you can find on these.thanks! more

    Top Notch
My order arrived 2 to 3 days before I expected it. Having read various reviews about Italian made revolvers, I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the product. I had finished an 1858 Rem from a kit about 30 year...s ago and remembered how solid the gun was even though cosmetically there were some problems. Not so with this revolver! But it was burring the loading lever link in handling and given Pietta's spotty reputation for heat treating, I heat tre...ated a number of smaller critical parts. In doing so I made the mistake of attempting to heat treat the nose of the cylinder hand without removing the cylinder hand spring first. That ruined the spring's temper. I tried re-tempering the spring but broke it after several attempts. If I were to try this again, I'd release the spring from the hand, then peen it back into the hand after tempering the hand nose. As it was, I bought a replacement from Uberti (which came heat treated), fit it to the gun, and it has worked fine. I also dehorned the gun -- radiusing away a lot of sharp edges and burrs with swiss files and stones. I don't like a gun that feels like a cactus in the hand, and the originals were not like that. I also knocked the cheezy finish off the grips and rubbed them with linseed oil. Finally took the gun out and shot it today. 50 rounds. I discovered that I had to seat the balls deeper than reccomended to keep them from working forward and jamming the cylinder. After working out that kink, the gun ticked along without a hitch. It does shoot a tad high at short range, but that is simply correct for this design. At about 21 feet / 7 paces the gun is pretty easy to keep on a torso sized target fanning the hammer. This keeps the shooter's line of sight outside the considerable cloud of smoke and makes more sense to me as a practice now than it had before. Another reason fanning the gun was likely to have evolved is the ability to force the gun through percussion cap fragments with this method. Cocking it single action with the thumb is a much less reliable method after the first shot from what I'm encountering. And this means a heavy duty cylinder hand like Uberti's is a good idea, by the way. I suspect that another reviewer posting on the Colts is correct in stating that the Colt's open top design has a reliability advantage as they have less potential to bind the cylinder on cap fragments. I guess I'll just have to buy one and find out -- lol. This gun is a real kick in the seat to shoot. Definitely the way to go for the budget conscious who enjoy a bit of careful home gunsmithing. Just bear in mind that it's a bit light duty as shipped when compared to the original military guns -- and yes, I have handled one of those. Stay safe -- and enjoy! more

    Great gun

    First Black Powder Pistol
Bought the 1858 as my first black powder pistol, and love it. The pistol itself is beautiful. The first time I shot it I was not pleased with the accuracy, but my second trip to the range turned out to be way better. 35 ...grains of pyrodex using .454 round balls proved to be an accurate load. It's a fun gun to shoot, but does take time to load; however, this saves money in the long run. more

    Excellent Value
Excellent value for the Pietta 1858. Delivery was quick which is consistent for Cabela's. The revolver arrived well packed and oiled. Fit and finish are very good. No play in cylinder and it locks-up tight at full cock. ...Note: Check the tightness of the screws and nipples before each shooting session. Great as a cap and ball and a solid and convenient platform for the different conversion cylinders because of the top strap and ease of removing the cylinder. more

    Good Gun - Great Price
This is the second black powder pistol I've purchased from Cabela's. I am very pleased with both guns. The Remington was just what I expected. Metal finish was very good. The wood grips are ok. The stain on them is dull,... but the fit to the frame is very good. The gun handels well, shots are very well grouped and high as the originals. I plan on adding more of Pietta's reproductions to my collection. more

Great Value and a very nice reproduction. I wanted to order it because I wanted to see which model I liked better, the 1858 Remy or the 1860 Colt. Both are fine representations. Well pleased
I bought this revolver on sale a short while ago and just came back from the range this afternoon. This is my 15th B.P. revolver, my 10th Pietta, and my first Pietta Remington. I bought this gun to antique, and use as a ...regular knock around range gun, and I am well pleased. On the plus side, you can't beat the price. Mine shoots dead on at 25 yards and if I do my part, fading eyesight and all, torso shots aren't a problem at 50 yards either. While its finish rivals the premier Italaian replica maker found on my other Remington, it does have a few hidden tool marks; not a problem as I intend to remove the finish anyway and the marks will actually be a plus. This is about the 12th blackpowder revolver that I have bought from Cabela's over the years and I have been pleased with all of them. If you want to buy a historical replica to collect or shoot I highly recommend Cabela's selection as their guns are just as good as others (in many cases Piettta revolvers are more accurate in the details than the OTHER Italian maker) and they are a lot less expensive. more

    not much luck
I guess I haven't been having much luck lately. This is a very popular item and one I've been wanting for a while. When it arrived it had the usual small flaws: a few nicks on the loading arm, mill marks on the muzzle, a...nd grips, whose finish was great, but whose fit was imperfect. Nothing the average person can't deal with. Mechanically it seemed tight and everything seems to function as it should. Then I had a serious run in with the cylinder. I ran out all the nipples but one....and that one ruinned two of my nipple wrenches. Frozen solid...penetrating oil, etc. No luck.Wish I could give it a better review. All in all it's real pretty, but I haven't fired it yet because I wan't everything in working order first. more

This revolver is a fine reproduction. For the money, you can't go wrong with this gun. I took it to the range today using pyrodex 30 grain pellets, #10 perc. caps, .451 lead balls, wads and TC bore butter. Like one of th...e previous reviews, don't buy the starter kit, buy the items needed ala carte. The gun fired with no problem and there was very minimal recoil. Very accurate with head and body shots at 7 yards no problem, even through the same hole at times. 25 yards, center mass every time. Loading takes some time and cleaning is a pain, other than that, go get one and enjoy it like me. Don't forget a good quality CLP oil after cleaning and you'll be good to go. more

Unfortunate manufacturing defect costs two stars.
If it were not for a manufacturing defect, I'd rate this pistol five stars. Overall, the finish is equal to my friend's replica from the other big 1858 producer that charges more. For example, his pistol has marginally b...etter metal finish in some spots but my Cabela's / Pietta has nicer looking and better fitting screws (barely noticeable differences). His pistol has an eye-catching high-gloss finish on the wood grips but this Pietta has a more subdued (and perhaps more authentic) oil or satin wood finish. My biggest complaint with the fit and finish is all the "Black Powder Only" and "Pietta Made in Italy" embossing on the sides of the barrel. Couldn't they have put that on the underside of the barrel? more

1858 New Army .44 Caliber Revolver
The first one was a gift several years ago from my wife, purchased through Cabelas. A great revolver. I bought another to have a matched pair. The one I received did not cock crisply nor did the trigger lock properly. It... was sent back to Cabelas for replacement, no charge. The new one functions flawlessly, and a spare cylinder I bought the other day from Cabelas fits like a champ. These Italian revolvers sometimes have little flaws, but Cabelas stands behind them, no questions asked. Piettas are reliable and well made. Once in a while you will get one that isn't 100%. Good Deal for the Price
I bought this gun specifically to use a Kirst Konverter replacement cylinder in so that I can fire 45 LC through it. Straight out of the box, the fit and finish was pretty darn nice, but the trigger had some very sharp c...orners on it. It pointed naturally but the grip seemed a little bit small. 1858 New Army
I would recommend this gun to anyone looking for a nice, reliable black powder revolver. I've put about a hundred rounds through mine so far and it has shot flawlessly. The trigger pull wasn't very smooth when I first sh...ot it, but it seems to be wearing in nicely. Overall fit and finish is good, there are a few rough spots inside of the handle, but I smoothed those down no problem. It has good blueing and nice grips. The cylinder is in alignment and you can count on the aim. A tin of #11 caps, some .454 balls, and some black powder and you will have a great time. One note: I recommend using the lubricated wads and swabbing once per cylinder load. If you use bore butter or the like on top of your balls for lubrication, it will all melt off after the first shot and you will then be shooting without lubricant. more

I purchased this revolver to target practice and as a side arm for hunting. It has been flawless so far. While putting about 60 rounds through it, I have improved my accuracy quite a bit. I will continue to practice and ...carry this replica for years to come. One thing, I had been using the No. 11 CCI magnum caps (all I had from muzzleloading season) and they do occasionally fall off of the nipples after a couple of shots are fired. If you are going to use CCI No. 11's then they need to pinched and made somewhat elliptical to fit snugly onto the nipple. Afterwards, I have not had a problem. From reading other sites and info No. 10 caps seem to fit much better and I will be trying those in the near future.Thanks... more

    Fun Gun
I have purchased three of these, a brace for myself and one for my son. I'm happy with them. I gave 4 stars because:1. The gun, out of the box shoots way high. You will need to file the front sight appropriately and appl...y some cold blue.2. The hammer is too sort. After 100 or so rounds, all of them had mushroomed hammers where they strike the cap. I filed the sides so it would clear the frame.3. The screws are too soft and the heads were all damaged from repeated disassembly. They can be replaced easily enough. I now shoot triple 7 and use a technique that doesn't require disassembly for cleaning. If you like to shoot black powder, buy one. the price is right. more

    1858 Remington New Army .44cal
A nice piece, a few small flaws right out of the box though. Like others have said, there was a scuff in the bluing on the barrel, and the trigger guard needed to have the slot for the trigger filed a bit, but mine came ...with a good set of grips (they met the backstrap properly.) Overall, for the price I'd say it's a good deal. more

    1858 new army .44
This product has a resonable price, but it also has the flaws that go with it. The poor finish on the wooden grips is easily fixable, but the small casting flaws on the top of the grip frame are not. The fit, function, a...nd accuracy are all within acceptable limits, but the sharp edges, here and there, had to be stoned smooth. more

    Good Buy
The finish on this gun was excellent however I had 2 small changes that had to be made. First the cylinder pin was so tight that I needed a small plastic hammer to remove it. The solution was simple use a very fine emory... cloth to smoth it up and worked fine. Second, the plunger pin kept falling out. This was also a simple fix. Removed the loading lever and plunger, then placed it on my bench anvil and used a very small center punch on each end of the pin while it was in place, works fine. more

    the second time
I bought my first 1858 3 years ago, loved it from the get go and have fired it over 150 times and it still shoots today like day one, So impressed with the first one that I bought the second one, like the first one this ...new one fired like a champ. My two friends like to fire the weapons as well, they are impressed withthe accuracy. I only problem that I have now is that I regret not buying spare cylinders. I am thinking about buying 1858 conversion in 45lc. Great shooting! more

Good service, but a slight problem
I got my 1858 New Army and the plunger pin kept falling out. I was considering returning it, but decided to try Loctite Red 262 first, and it worked great, the pin doesn't come out anymore and shouldn't ever again. Piett...a pistols are great for entry level BP guns, but I heard this problem (and solution) is not unheard of, but not...common, you know? In other words, do not freak out and assume you're going to get a broken gun. You probably won't. If you do, fix it or return it, no big deal. Other than that small problem, I got an EXCELLENT 1858 New Army for an excellent price. more

    Awesome!
I got one of these about a year ago when I was 16, although I hadn't fired it until today. It was awesome, though!I used 30 grains of FFFG American Pioneer powder and a roundball.I love the concusive boom it has, totally ...diffirent from the shorter, sharper sound of modern guns.Plus the recoil was great, you notice it, but it's over a period of time, it's auctually quite pleasant!I just wish I had more chances to fire it as indoor ranges don't accept black powder, lol!But if your looking to buy deffinately get this pistol, it's great! more

    Most accurate!
I just got my 1858 New Army (the standard model- not the target model) and took it out to the range twice in the past week. I expected it to be a fun shooter, but was shocked to quickly learn that this is the most accura...te handgun I own! I have several modern handguns of various models and calibers, and an 1851 Navy percussion revolver, all of which are a pleasure to shoot, but this new 1858 New Army is by far the most accurate of the bunch. I was really not expecting the kind of accuracy I got out of this revolver. For the record I was using Triple 7 FFFG and Hornady .451 44 cal lead balls. My only complaint about this gun is that during the second cleaning the pin that holds the plunger in place on the loading handle assembly simply fell out. Fortunately I was able to put it back in place, and it is a simple fix to keep it from happening again. Based on the overall performance of the gun I would certainly not let that little mishap deter me from recommending this gun. more

    Almost perfect
A few weeks ago I picked this up at the store in post falls, ID. The gun is beautiful! I also bought the buckle down holster, cci #10 caps, round balls, fff triple 7 powder, a colt powder flask because they dident have t...he remington plus I like the look of the colt better anyways, some pistol wads from a different store because they were out, and the powder flask spout kit w/ 5 spouts of diff. sizes. The first time I shot the gun aimed very low about 10''. After cleaning which was easy and useing bore butter to oil. I tried again today with a 30g spout of 777 and the gun was dead on. 3'' groups at 30 yards is fine with me. The trigger pull is great. So the draw backs, or things I noticed. The bar that holds the loading leaver togather slips out very easily when the gun is tilted to put the cylender in, and can be a little anoying. It dosent fall out all the way but makes it so the loading lever cant close. The other thing is the cci caps are great, no misfires and they fit perfectly but you have to put them on by hand and then slowly push them down with the hammer so they are on tight otherwise the first time the hammer stikes the cap it will only push it on instead of fireing. Also get a pistol nipple wrench! I had a universal one and when i tryed to clean the wrench wouldent fit. more

    for first timers
I bought this gun last week after much research. It is one of the best models of cap and ball guns. It is a Pieta, which I’m guessing is better than traditions. I bought some cleaning supplies made by Traditions and th...ey were extremely shotty. Uberti is higher quality but will run an extra 180 dollars at least. This is a well made gun except that the grips don’t exactly match. #10 primers fit fine and work better than #11’s. I know some people disagree. You can use either. I use .451 balls with 25-30 grains of fff powder. This is apparently the best combination for accuracy. Get this model over those with a lot of brass. The steal is stronger and the brass tarnishes easily. Cabelas is the cheapest place I have found both on the internet and in local stores and I have looked everywhere. I was delivered the gun 2 days after ordering with standard shipping. more

    .44 1858 or .36 1851 ..........
As an owner of the Cabala’s 1851 Colt (in .36) the 1858 seemed to be the logical next choice. I’m not sure if it was or not, but, I’ll compare the two.The first question everyone has is “How is the recoil?” Wel...l, it’s about the same as a 9 M/M only slower. What I mean by that is that the 8”, .44 Cal, 1858 has about the same overall recoil energy but it takes longer. This makes for a very nice gun to shoot with the only after effects being really dirty hands. Women really get into shooting it as it’s a big gun with very little recoil. So, how does the .44 cal, 1858 compare to the .36 Cal, 1851? Well, the 1851 has the recoil of a .380 auto: the 1858 has slightly more. But, the 1858 is heavier so it averages out. I guess, if you are thinking about a 1858 in .36 (Police model) you can expect to have even lighter felt recoil then the lighter 1851. OR, if your thinking about a 1851 in .44 Cal, your going to get slightly more felt recoil then the 1858, but, still in the 9 M/M range. At both 15 and 25 yards, the 1851 groups better, I seem to like the sights better and I can acquire the target faster. But, the .36 is on the ragged edge of having enough power for Cowboy shooting. With the 80 grain, .36 Cal ball you’ll need solid hits. The 141 grain, .44 Cal ball, from the 1858, has no such issues! The 1858 seems to have more sharp edges; especially on the hammer. I always seem to have a nick on my thumb, either from the hammer or from the latch on the loading lever.Loading is about the same; both load as fast (or slow) as the other. It seems easier to gob grease into the cylinder of the 1851 (to seal against chain fires) then the 1858, but, that could be just because I’ve done it more on the 1851. In any event, there really isn’t much difference.Cleaning is a different story. The 1851 disassembles into three main parts; barrel, cylinder and frame. This allows you to drop the barrel and cylinder into a solution to soak while you clean the frame. On the 1858 you can remove the cylinder but the barrel and frame stay as one unit so you’ll need to take the wood grips off if you want to “dunk” it. I use a mixture of 50/50 Simple Green to water or 50/50 Windex Green (with vinegar) to water. Both seem to do a good job. The same mixture with an old (soft) toothbrush does wonders for the frame. A small bottle brush does well on the cylinder. Make sure you clean out the flash holes! As a history buff, I oil all my black powder guns with vegetable oil (olive oil works well too). They seem to look even better after a couple of months of cleaning and oiling this way. Now, the tough call, do I get another .44 Cal, 1858 to give me two guns for Cowboy shooting? Or, do I get a (pair?) of 1851 or 1860 Colts in .44? Tough call! more

    GREAT GUN!!
I took it out a couple weeks ago and shot it and it works G-R-E-A-T! I shot about 12 rounds and didn't get any misfires, nor did it jam or fail to fire. The cleaning of it took within 30 minutes (not even) and now it is ...ready to be fired again. The powder i used was Pyrodex. That also made the cleaning easier. As for when i got it, it was clean, and the only scratches on it were on the brass Trigger Guard. But i do not take off rating for the fact that Brass is a generally soft metal. I would most certainly recommend this as a Blackpowder pistol to one of my friends if they were looking into getting one. more

1858 remington 44 cal. mfg. pietta
great. i bought one with a spare cylinder. it was so fine i ordered another with another spare cylinder. everything interchanges beautiful. the timing is perfect. absolutely no cylinder drag at all. the cylinder bolt dro...ps exactly at the full cock position. "pietta" sure knows how to make a fine product. the finish is much like the origionals. there are no buffed out edge's. for the price, it can't be beat. i have a friend who bought one else where (pietta) for double the price. the comparison was exact. i've done plenty of shopping first, and there are plenty of "pietta's" for way too much money. the best deal was at "cabela's. at first i thought they might be "seconds", but definately not at all. i even bought the "spare parts kit". exellent quality (i don't think i'll ever have to use them but it is nice to have them on hand) the only reason i'm doing a "customer's review" is to let other's know how fine "cabela's" store is, and how good "pietta products" really are. enough said. 1858 New Army
I've bought two of these revolvers over the last three years, and have been absolutely amazed at the quality of workmanship. Pietta was not my first choice, and I bought a another version from another vendor. The other 1...858 needed additional work on the trigger, and the fit was not as good as the Pietta's. I use both of my 1858 New Armys with the "Konversion" cylinder in .45Schofield--the load is much more accurate than the .45LC. Although I must admit I do like the recoil of the .45LC load in the Remingtons. Shooting "Duelist" style in Frontier cartridge class I do make a lot of smoke and sometimes hit the targets--but the "style factor" is just too good with these guns as they're set up. These two Remingtons from Cabela's are quality arms I'd recommend to anyone. more

    .44
Everything about the gun was excellent, I cannot complain as of yet. even though it's a .44 it actually takes .45 caliber, so if you buy the conversion cylinder you can use .45 colt (.45 long colt) bullets. There is noth...ing like black powder though and I found the revolver easy to clean in spite of what I have been told about black powder guns. All I do is take the grips off and dunk the whole thing in a bucket of hot soapy water shake and wipe to produce a good clean gun. the finish and polish is not the best out there (some minor buff and machine lines) but it certainly is close enough and makes a fantastic display piece. This is a piece of history and is really a smooth and works well. The Italians make a good replica, good work. more

I ordered the Remington 1858 after much research. The revolver is considered far superior to the Colt. The shipping was extremely fast (about a week early). The gun looks great. 1858 Remington is great!
As an avid hunter shooter and ex navy SEAL, I only accept the highest quality in all firearms I own and this piece did not let me down. After reading all the reviews here, talking to guys who owned them, I figured it was... a 50/50 shot to get a nice replica pistol. Was I wrong! This pistol looks beautiful, no scratches, dings or bad bluing, very tight tolerances and overall, very well put together pistol. I shot it straight out of the box, .454 balls, #10 and 11 caps, 30 g of fffg and at 15 to 25 yds I was getting consistent 1 to 1.5" groups. Cylinder was tight and cocking hammer was stiff first three cylinders but after that and some never seize, perfect. Gorgeous pistol, will buy more soon! more

Neither side was sanded properly and they didn't come close to matching. The gun shoots 4" groups at 25 yards which is pretty good. The gun does shoot 4" low (fine, just file the front sight) and 4" left (not so fine).Based on the other reviews, I expected a lot more and would not recomend someone buy it. more

1858 Remington is a good buy
I have been shooting blackpowder for nearly 20 years. I have owned numerous reproduction arms. This Pietta is well made, shoots well and looks good. Yes, I have found tooling marks in places that are not seen when the pi...stol is fully assembled. Overall, this pistol looks good and fires well. I feel that it is more functional than the average UIberti and I own both. Pietta has a more modern manufacturing process. I highly recommend this pistol. If you can only own one, buy the 1858. It is stronger and more accurate than the Colts. I shoot the .454 ball with 28 grains of fffg and get very nice groups at 20 yards, at 15 feet, most gunfight distances, some balls nearly go throught the same hole. I really like this pistol, it is great fun for a slow afternoon. more

    1858 New Army Revolver
Never having purchased a black powder pistol before, I naturally asked friends and relatives who had. Most of them recommended steel frame revolvers with a top strap, because I planned to fire this pistol on a regular ba...sis. You can use your preference of black powder pellets, and the ease of cylinder changes is remarkable. This pistol is easy to use, and fits my large hand comfortably. The low price was an incentive, too. more

A very good weapon to buy. Along with starter kit and accessories. If you're looking for a weapon with good accuracy and durabilty the New Army 1858 Remington .44 cap and ball Revolver is certainly for you. My father bou...ght this for me and I use it for personal use and also use it at Civil War Re-enactments every year since I've gotten it. more

    Firts BP Revolver
I've always been curious about percussion cap revolvers and finally took the plunge and bought this popular model for recreational use and deer hunting. Overall fit and finish was what i'd expect for a replica in this pr...ice range, you do essentially get what you pay for, it wasnt flawless, but it wasnt shoddy either. The timing of the cylinder is good and so is the balance of the gun. Breakdown for cleaning is EASY. Its nice that there are parts kits so readily available for change outs after wear and extra cylinders are abundant also. I dont know how one could go wrong with these pietta repro's. Nice to have a piece of history, if only in a replica. Keep it up Cabelas. more

    1858 Remington New Model Army
In about 1986 I bought one of these from Cabela's (after seeing the Pale Rider movie) and loved it right from the start.I didn't use it as much as I would have liked to due to the typical nuicances of BP shooting ,or jus...t lazyness on my part, and the mess, greasing the cylinder, etc. Then about a year ago I got a conversion cylinder for it chambered in 45 Long Colt (just like Clint had in the movie). The old '58 has been reborn and I'm loving it more than ever. Mine also is Pieta , the "old silver" model. Love my '58-----Love Cabela's !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! EEEEEEE-H-AAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! more

    Good shooters
I've been using a pair of these Pietta 1858's - with a pair of cartridge conversion cylinders - for a full season. They have never misfired, and are very comfortable to shoot. One caution - the cartridge conversion cylin...ders would not index, but the retailer I purchased the cylinders from agreed to do the gunsmithing to make them work in my revolvers at no charge. They are now SMOOTH. So if you want to fire cartridges through these revolvers, make sure the conversion cylinder retailer will guarantee them to work. more

    44 Army
This is a real nice reproduction 44 Remington. Pietta has remade this gun so well the parts are enter changeable with the orginal. The finish is good and after 900 rounds the cylinder arm is wore out. not bad concedering... what black powder will do to a gun. iam still using the orginal nipples that came with the gun. I dont know about othere cabales stores but the one in Buda Tx has a black powder lover and knows his stuff. more

    1858 New Army .44cal
I had one at one point and liked it. It was fairly accurate for not being a target model. The main issue was, and why I returned it, was that the hammer mushroomed out and it scraped against the sides of the housing and ...did not get to the primer. Also, nobody was able to tell me what kind of primers to use. more

    1858 8" Barrel
I have owned about 10 different Pietta made revolvers, which I've purchased through Cabelas. Their fit and finish is great. Very high quality. Cabelas is the only place I'll buy percussion pistols from.

    Love mine
Used it a fair amount, and love it's performance for the cost. Easy loading, pretty accurate for fixed sights. Need to keep up on the cleaning though or will rust. Great side arm during black powder season
