Originally produced by Remington from 1863 to 1875, the 1858 New Model Army was a technologically advanced design which incorporated such features as a closed top frame (now standard on nearly all modern revolvers). Only the venerable Colt 1860 Army revolver saw more use than the New Model Army as an issue sidearm in the Civil War, with over 100,000 model 1858 revolvers purchased for military use during the War Between the States. When the market dominance of Colt at the time is taken into account (due in no small part to the prevalence of earlier military-oriented Colt designs such as the 1851 Navy) the popularity of the 1858 New Model Army speaks volumes about its avant garde design.
