PPSh-41 Features

The PPSh-41 is an open-bolt, select fire submachine gun that operates on a direct-blowback action and fires at an incredibly fast 1250 rounds per minute.  This gun was built with a 10.6 inch barrel that sits inside a heat guard with a built-in muzzle compensator designed to help control the gun in full-auto fire.  The hooded front sight is accompanied by a dual-range (100m and 200m) rear sight with an open square notch.

PPSh-41 Ballistics

PPSh-41 Capacity

The PPSh-41 is chambered in 7.62x25mm Tokarev, the standard Russian pistol caliber in WWII, and feeds from 35 round double-stack, single-feed curved detachable box magazines or 71 round drum magazines.  These drums lacked reliable interchangeability from one gun to the next, so many soldiers had to go through a trial-and-error period during training to find out which drums worked with their gun.
Measuring 33.2 inches long with an unloaded weight of 8 pounds, the PPSh-41 falls low on the mobility list of submachine guns from WWII only beating out the M1A1 Thompson for its ease of carry.  The high fire rate of the gun also mandated extra ammo to be carried by Soviet conscripts.

PPSh-41 Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The PPSh-41 was built with a wood stock that featured a very traditional design and had a vented handguard that did little to prevent the user from touching the barrel with bare skin.  This led many users to support the gun by grabbing the magazine.  The spent cases in the PPSh are ejected vertically giving them the opportunity to be sent down your shirt and burning your back.

PPSh-41 Fit & Finish

While the PPSh-41 was crudely built, it did have some features not often found on second-generation submachine guns including a fire selector and muzzle compensator.  This gun is made with a lot of stamped components and impressively only has 87 components in its construction as opposed to the much higher numbers of its competition.
