Ruger SR-556 Features

The Ruger SR-556 is a semi-automatic AR15 pattern rifle that operates on a short-stroke gas piston and multi-lug rotating-bolt action.  It has a 16.1 inch barrel paired with a mid-length and adjustable gas system that perfectly balances the gas pressure to cycle the action.  It is also built with a MIL-SPEC pattern carbine buffer tube and adjustable stock.  The optics rail atop the A3 pattern upper receiver continues along the top of the free-floating handguard as well as the top of the gas block.

Ruger SR-556 Capacity

The Ruger SR-556 is chambered in 5.56x45mmNATO and 6.8SPC and feeds from typical AR15 pattern magazines.  While the 6.8mm versions are restricted to STANAG box magazines with capacities of 5, 10, 20 and 30 rounds, the 5.56 versions can feed from larger quad-stack 60 and 100 round “coffin” magazines as well as 60 and 100 round drum mags.

Measuring 32.75 to 36 inches long with an unloaded weight of 7.9 pounds, the Ruger SR-556 is definitely on the heavier side of 16” AR15 pattern rifles.  This is due to the added weight from the heavier-profile barrel, aluminum handguard and the solid gas block and upgraded gas system.  Though it’s heavier than a normal AR, it is still the same overall length making it just as easy to use in close-quarter environments.

Ruger SR-556 Ergonomics

Ergonomics
As far as controls go, the SR-556 has standard right-handed AR15 controls.  It can be found with a wide variety of pistol grips and stocks, though all of them are built with an 11-inch quad rail that allows the users to attach any type of grips they want.  The adjustable stock, that can easily be replaced, can be moved to 6 different positions to allow the user to change the length of pull.

Ruger SR-556 Fit & Finish

The Ruger SR-556 is built on a standard AR15 lower receiver and contains MIL-SPEC internal parts with a Nickel-Boron coated bolt carrier.  It has an A3 style upper receiver forged by Cero Fabrications.  All aluminum parts are coated with a Type-III hard anodization.
