    Great rifle for the money
Purchased the 12FV in 308 about a year ago. I love Savage rifles, great accuracy right out of the box, but the stock needs to be replaced. Did so with a laminated stock and added a Cabela's Covenant FFP scope. Love the M...OA reticle with this rifle. I shoot out to 1000 off the reticle. 100 yd accuracy is MOA with good ammo. Mine likes 155 AMAX but may have to go with ELD 150's. 178's are too slow and drop like a rock past 400. Great setup for the money. more

    Great deal for the price
Savage 12FV .204.I bought this rifle to play with at the range and maybe Coyote hunt some. Outstanding accuracy out of the box. I was just using the factory 32grn Fiocchi ammo to start with. Was only using a cheap rest, ...and was getting what I feel are great groups for the 1st few shots out of the box. Im excited to see what this rifle will do with sand bags and reloads! The wife was also shooting it well. The 2 shot 100yd group I'm including was just after getting it half way sighted in, and was after shooting a box of 30-06 and a box of .325WSM. Im sure it would have been better if I hadn't been already shooting some heavy recoilers. more

    Great gun for the money!
Alright. i have had this rifle for awhile now. I believe a review should be written after a person has had time to really use the product. My rifle is chambered in 6.5 CM.Pros: heavy barrel, Acutrigger, price. AccurateCon...s: The stock, the center feed magazine.First thing first had a scope mounted and bore sighted. Next was replaced the stock with a cheaper boyd's hardwood stock.Trigger is great to shoot with no problems. aftermarket stock stiffened it up and shoots even better. I started shooting this gun and was impressed with the accuracy so curiosity grew on how far it can shoot while keeping the accuracy. So far up it shoots very well up to 1770 yards. Not bad for a low dollar rifle! Only problem I have now my shooting range is to short... more

    Savage 12 FV 6.5 Creedmoor
This is a fantastic shooting gun. Clover leaf holes at 100 yards.Handloads can be much smaller mine is liking RL16 41.9 g with the hornady 147 ELD-M . This is my second Savage 6.5 both are top notch in accuracy dept. For... the trigger problem I found a small drop of blue locktite on the trig spring where it screws back and forth will end that problem.I set mine at 2lbs. Forward Stock flex can be fixed with some auto epoxy with flox or chopped/fiberglass in the low areas in the stock. There's plenty of room for it. This gun is an amazing deal for the price. more

    Great accuracy
Bought this rifle in 22-250 and it is very accurate, sub MOA with all 3 factory ammos I tried. It shoots Hornady 55gr #8337 well one hole groups at 100 yards. Will have to try another caliber somewhere down the road.

Very nice shooting gun! Trigger pull was good when I got it and didn't mess with it. Low recoil with a heavy barrel. Put a nice scope on it and use it for coon and coyotes.

    I have 2 of these
I bot a 6.5 and a 308 and both are tack drivers. I spend a lot of time on load developement and it pays off. These will put bullets in the same hole at 100 yards all day. The 308 is also super fun supressed and subsonic.... I had both barrels threaded and changed out the stocks immediately. You are basically buying a barrel and action. The stock is not good but what do you expect for the price. Choate makes a great stock for these. more

    Accutrigger Problems after 40 rounds
I was very excited about the rifle. Put 40 rounds through it and the accutrigger started jamming. I never adjusted the trigger from the factory settings. I cleaned the rifle and tighten up the accutrigger with the tool i...ncluded following the owners manual instructions. Went to fire the rifle again and still had the trigger jamming after 3 or 4 rounds. I am in the process of sending it back to savage for them to repair and adjust....big pain in the rear to go through this process and who knows how long it will take. Very dissappointed more

I first purchased a 12FV in .223 on a whim - primarily for a cheap target gun. It turned out to be a fantastic shooter. Sub 0.75 MOA with just about everything I feed it. Sub 0.5 with handloads. I wanted to start shootin...g F-Class and got another one in 6.5 CM. It's equally as good. more

    disappointed
I bought this rifle in 223. First inspection of the rifle I was thrilled with it. At the range I found it will shoot 1/2 moa with a wide range of loads which made me feel as if I got a real steal. But it wasn't long, fir...st time on the range, that I started to have problems. First is that I can only load three cartridges in the magazine. If I load four it jams nearly every time, with three it jams now and then. The accutrigger is fantastic until it doesn't work. The spring that provides the tension on the accutrigger moves from the recoil of the rifle and as it moves the trigger pull gets lighter and lighter. Eventually it gest to the point where either it will not stay cocked and it releases the sear from the notch against the accu relaese or the sear releases from the notch against the accurelease when you depress the accureleae. In either case you cannot shoot the rifle. This happens often and the only thing you can do is disassemble the rifle and readjust the accutrigger. I am working on a fix for this now. I purchased two Savage rifles within the past few months and both have this same problem with the accutrigger. It shoots too darn good not to recommend it but I recommend it with reservations. Be aware of the problems before you buy. more

    6.5 Creedmoor
Interesting rifle. The 12FV in 6.5 Creedmoor is not a standard item for Savage so I'm guessing this is a special for Cabela's. Was surprised that it has a notched barrel nut. Savage used them up until about 5 years ago w...hen they converted to smooth barrel nuts. I have a 12FV in .223 and it is a real shooter, so when I saw it in 6.5 Creedmoor I bought one with no hestitation. The barrel fouls like crazy but that does not seem to affect accuracy. Followed standard break-in and now have about 75 rounds through it. Groups are shrinking and my last 5-shot group at 100 yards was .5inch. I think it's about ready to take out to the longer range where I live that goes out to 500 yards. Changed the stock out with a Choate tactical, installed a single shot ramp and adjusted the trigger down to about 2 oz. Glass is a 20xSSA. Nice rifle. Great price. more

    Almost
The gun is very accurate. I was able to get 1 hole groups with the gun once I got it loaded. The trigger is excellent. One reason I bought the gun was all the good things I had heard/read about the Savage trigger. The fi...nish on the stock was uneven and this is the first new rifle I bought in my 70+ years that had no sights or mounts/rings. The rifle has an internal clip that you must fill through the action. If you have the option of buying the rifle with a detachable clip or as a single shot, you will enjoy the rifle more. more

Had a problem but Cabelas/Savage made it right
I ordered my 12 FV in 6.5 Creedmoor while they were on sale and had a rebate, so for $269 got a pretty good heavy barrel range toy. They didn't have a creedmoor in stock so had to order it. After it came in and I got it ...home I found a problem the first time I chambered a round. There were several burrs in the chamber scratching the brass when chambering a round. Its a bit disappointing but all manufacturing can have flaws. I called Savage customer service and was very quickly told they would do whatever they needed to make it right. I could send it in or just take it back to Cabelas and have them send it in for me. I chose to take it to the Cabelas Allen TX store. When I explained the problem to them they examined the chamber and saw the problem, instead of sending it back to Savage and having me wait, the Outfitter in the gun library found he had another in stock and after a bit of paperwork I was out the door with a replacement rifle. FYI the replacement shoots sub MOA with ease. So in the end great rifle, and the customer service at Cabelas was top notch. my five star review is an average of the gun and Cabelas customer service. I had a problem with the original gun but the replacement was great...so three stars, Cabelas customer service...an off the chart seven stars! more

I am very impressed with Savage's Accutrigger. It is extremely smooth with a crisp break. Ringing Steel at 1000 yards 6,5 Creedmoor
This gun is amazing, it's accurate and affordable. In less than a week I'm ringing steel at 1000 yards. It really likes the Hornady 140 ELD and 147 ELD Match ammo. Set scopes ele MOA around 28.5 and ring the steel. Handl...oads with 41g of H4350 and Hornady 140 ELDs are giving speeds of 2760 fps and 1/2 MOA at 100 yards. Unbelievable accuracy out of the box
Bought this rifle today. Bought a scope and installed it today. Using an LED boresighter in my basement, determined we were good to go. Shot 5 rounds with store-bought .223 55 gr Fiocchi ammo. Then proceeded to shoot 6 s...ub MOA groups at 100 yards ranging from .433" to .92" with various hand loaded stuff. Best group was with 25.3 grains of CFE 223 and a 62gr BTHP. Savage 12FV
Picked up the Savage 12FV after doing a ton of research on varmint rifles. This thing is not for carrying all day, but put a bipod on it and shoot from a table or platform and it really shines. I think it is around 11.5 ...pounds with scope, so there is no recoil and you can maintain eyes on target throughout the shot. I should have verified bore-sight after Cabela's mounted the scope and told me they bore-sighted it. Off by several feet to the right and about a foot high at 100-yards starting off. I'll know next time. After breaking in the barrel and zero, this thing is shooting sub-MOA at 100-yards. Outstanding value! more

I bought the Savage 12FV on sale with a rebate, so pretty cheap in my book. It will consistently do sub-moa with Winchester White Box 45gr 22-250. Shot many 3/4" groups. Great Rifle for the price
Recently bought the 12 VF chambered in .223 as a Christmas gift for my son after he did a lot of research. Charlie at the Berlin store spent a good amount of time talking to him before we made the decision to by this on ...line. Getting the 100 dollar rebate from Savage makes it even better. We went back to the Berlin store and paired it with a Vortex diamond back scope. Once again, Dan (with the beard) spent a lot of time with my son showing him the different choices for scopes. Cabelas mounted and bore sighted it for free. It was a very Merry Christmas in my house, took it to the range on Christmas morning in a snow storm. After a quick break in, he shot half inch groups at 100 yards. Thanks Cabelas for your time and patience with my son. more

    Savage 12FV in .308
Pretty close to perfect, from a tinkerers point of view. If you plan on taking it out and shooting it as is, make sure the mounting bolts are torqued properly. Accutrigger is so easy to adjust that it seems like cheating.... The barrel is free floated from the factory, I chose to open the channel up a bit more with sandpaper wrapped around a socket. With the heavy barrel and a hollow synthetic stock, the balance of the rifle is quite nose heavy. Filled the stock with concrete crack sealer and bbs. I hand load for it only, so I can't speak to what factory loads work, but the faster twist should handle most common loads. Mine loves 110g vmax at mid range power. Haven't gone heavier than 150g yet, but don't doubt they'll be even more accurate. Have a cheap scope and bipod on it, 1 inch groups at 100yds is good enough for what I use it for right now. Very good value at the regular price, the significant rebate only sweetened the deal. Only issue I experienced was difficulty finding the proper scope bases, make sure you have them fit and installed at the store before heading home. more

    Precision rifle
Just picked up my third one of these. Have a 223, 22-250, and now 308. Barrels are a little rough on the inside at first and require some break in to settle down. With a bit of shooting and standard cleaning they all sho...ot sub MOA with handloads. The 223 is sub 1/4 MOA in a bedded stock with ten shot groups of 69smk and varget! 22-250 with 53gr vmax and 308 with 178 eld are also excellent, shooting 0.5-0.8 MOA in factory cheapo stocks. Originally intended to use the actions for custom builds, but when they shoot so well there is no reason to change them. more

    What a bargain
Bought the 9-twist .223 expecting to immediately throw away the stock and factory barrel. The stock was a little close to the barrel right at the top of the forend, but ten minutes and a Dremel took care of that. Next five shots gave a 5/8" group with PPU Match (who knew?) 69s, followed by a 1/2" 5-shot group with Nexus SMK77s. 30 rounds downrange and it's shooting a half MOA off a bipod with factory ammo, Weaver two-piece mounts, and a Viper 2.5-10x. more

You can't go wrong for the money
I now have 3 of these. 223, 308 and 6.5 Creedmoor. Every one of them is a tack driver. For out of the box accuracy they are second to none at an economical price. The only thing to mention is they are heavy. That doesn't... bother me. I just don't lug them all over the country side. more

    First shell wont eject
Bought a 12FV 6.5 Creedmoor, went out to sight it in, first shot the shell wouldn't eject. Finally worked it out and there was a big scratch on the brass left by a burr in the chamber. Good...but
I purchased a 22/250 Savage FV from Cabelas last Spring. Everything worked fine and it was accurate. So, decided to buy a 204 recently. The issues:1. Front scope mounting screw was messed up. Had to run a bottoming tap i...nto the hole to make it work 2. Will not feed from the magazine. Shell tip is not elevated enough to enter the chamber...currently it's a single shot3. Very long throat. You can't seat 32 grain Vmx bullets close to the lands at all With bullet seated to 1/2 the case neck, you are conservatively 1/8 plus from the lands. In my opinion this is a project gun. Outstanding price, probably makes it ok. Otherwise, I would be totally disappointed more

    The rumors are true!
I shot 3 different loads in this heavy barreled 308 and all groups were within an inch at 100 yards and 200 yards. I tried 150 gr SST's, 125 gr SST's and 125 gr Ballistic tips and it liked all of them. The trigger is set... lighter than I expected it to be but that's not a complaint and is probably part of the reason for the good groups. The stock is cheap like others have mentioned, but a rifle that shoots this good deserves a new stock anyway. It's time to give some heavier bullets a try. more

This rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor has been fantastic so far. I have only shot about 15 rounds so far but its already shooting one inch groups and I expect it will get much better. Great rifle
For the price (definitely so when on sale), you can't beat this varmint rifle for the price for performance. Sure the injection molded stock sucks, but a quality replacement stock can be had for low to moderate prices. I... have the 22-250 Rem and this gun is shooting sub-MOA 5-shot groups at 100 yards with factory Federal American Eagle 50 gr HP ammo. Does what everyone says
After reading many reviews, and doing tons of research, I decided to buy one in .223. Bought on sale with rebate yet to boot. Had never owned a target/varmint rifle before so had no expectations or any comparison. With t...hat being said, I topped it with a vortex HSLR in 4-16 and headed to the range after bore sighting. First two shots, at 100 yards, were 1/3'' apart. Dialed in the scope. Next two of three shots were in the 1" target. Shot 24 rounds total. Shots 22 and 23 were a bit high and to the right but withing the 1" circle, touching one another. All shots with 55 gr factory ammo.I have no doubt, this gun will outperform my abilities. If you're not sure about the quality of savage, pull the trigger yourself and find out. As I said, never owned a rifle as such but my oh my...... Cant wait till this gun comes into its own. more

    Amazing Gun
I have one in .204 Ruger and just purchased another one in 6.5 CM. These are great rifles. They have great barrels which are very accurate. I love the bull barrel and although it makes the rifle extremely heavy I wouldn'...t want it any other way. The .204 shoots sub MOA at 100 yards. The trigger is adjustable and a very good trigger surprisingly. I use it mainly for predator hunting but can't wait to see how far out I can push it. The only bad thing about it is the stock. The stock is cheap and has a weird feel but it doesn't seem to affect the accuracy of the rifle.I just ordered on in 6.5 and plan on changing out the stock and putting some nice optics on it to make it into a long range rifle. I can't wait to see how that shoots. If you want a good value rifle that can shoot sub MOA then go ahead and grab one of these. I picked it up in store after about 7 days from ordering it. If you are on the edge, get one before they go out of stock! more

    Most accurate rifles I own.
I own three of these rifles. One in .204, one in 22-250 and one in 308. They all make nice neat little clover leafs without much effort. Hardly any recoil from the smaller calibers. very light from the 308. If it weren't... for the heavy barrels, I would carry these for all hunting. Maybe I'll buy one and have it fluted. You can't beat the price and accuracy. Highly recommend. Did some cool swirl painting on the stocks of the 204 and 22-250. more

Great out of the box - better with hand loads
Inexpensive with a record of being a great shooter. Agree on both points. Bought in 308 to learn reloading and had a lot of issues to start with that were actually due to my inexperience reloading. Got the reloading thin...gs squared away for the most part and the only things I did was add about 24 ounces of bagged sand into the hollow stock to make the gun balance and smoothed off the rough stock molding seams.Really likes the Herters 150 SPCE for factory and I reload the brass. Likes 150 NBT at .050 off lands and accubond 150 at .040 off. Both with ww 748. Incredible rifle @ an incredible price!
I have started shooting competitively. I am not extremely wealthy, nor do I have the money to go out and buy Defiance actions for every application I need. That said, I buy these Savage 12FV'sas a base rifle for my build...s. I have now bought four of them, three chambered in a .308 and one in a .223. The stock for the rifle is alright, but nothing to write home to mom about. That is fine for me, as I move mine over to chassis systems. My .223 has been pretty much unchanged, other than moving it over to a chassis. This I use as my training rifle. Out of the box, you will not find a truer shooting rifle. My .308's have been used as donor rifles, to rechamber in a chamber that is more conducive to what I shoot, namely one has been converted to a 6.5 Creedmoor and the other two have been converted to 6 Dashers. The reason I love these rifles for my purpose are the out of the box, smooth as silk action, the very high quality stainless bolt, and the accu-trigger. For my precision work, the accu-trigger is such a great option. I like a very light pull weight trigger, as do all who shoot precision. The accu-trigger can be dialed down to 1.5 pounds, and that is where I dial it to. What is great for me is this trigger having two stages. In shooting fast precision, you find yourself jamming the bolt. Light triggers can and do fire without pulling the trigger when the bolt is jammed quickly. I have had this happen in competition, fortunately down range. The first stage lever on the accu-trigger prevents this from happening. I love that. Prevents a DQ for that happening. The bolt on this rifle is incredible as well. Actions are true and the package is highly accurate. These rifles are truly a great value. You will not find a better out of the box rifle for the money. This I can assure you. Buy this rifle and place the money you saved on purchasing a great first focal plane scope. You can also spend that savings customizing that rifle as well, like I enjoy doing. This Cabelas exclusive is a great deal. Buy it and have some fun with it. I have, four times now. :) more

    Impressive Shooter!
After years of building my own rifles I splurged and bought a Model 12FV in .223 from Cabella's while Savage was offering a rebate. To be honest I wasn't expecting much for the money I paid. While I was in the store I pi...cked up a box of Australian Outback 69gr SMK ammo while it was on sale. I warmed the rifle up with some Wolf 62gr and the 1.5" groups were not surprising at all then I switched to the 69gr AO and got 4 five shot groups in a row under .6". It's been a long time since a rifle got me so excited! So back to the store I went to buy a pound of Varget and some 69gr SMK's. Best 5 shot group so far is .26" coming from a box-stock (unaltered) rifle with a flimsy plastic stock. Best money I've spent on a rifle in a long time. more

    Great accuracy for the price
This rifle is a good value for the accuracy it provides. I only gave it 4 stars because i may end up sending it back to savage. I have the .223 caliber, and if you search on the internet, its not hard to find that this c...aliber has primer piercing and light primer strike issues. I've been working through this for the past couple weeks as I try and develop the best handload. It does primer piercing and light strikes with factory ammo and reloads. I've adjusted the firing pin spring and that has helped some. Looking at Savage's website for warranty and its not the greatest, 1yr, must ship in original box with original receipt. Sorta surprising as other manufacturers provide much better service than that. That being out of the way; this rifle is a blast to shoot. It shoots 69 grain Sierras the best so far. I can consistently get sub 1/2" groups at 100, and 1 inch groups at 200. 55 grain ammo works OK and will shoot 1 MOA. I was able to even get 75 grain Hornady AMAX's to shoot pretty good with this 1 in 9' twist barrel. I've got the Model 10T, and I've personally seen the 12FV in .308 and they both shoot great as well (no firing pin issues). The chambers on the 12FV's seem to be a little shorter than the model 10. Add the Savage BA bolt handle to this gun, You can thank me later. Also, the first time you loosen the end cap on the bolt, it's a real pain in the .... you will want to protect it and use a vise to break it free. Its a 6mm hex wrench. YMMV more

Right out of the box with just a basic 3x9x40 I put 4 ro...unds in a dime at 100 yards. I didn't want to spend all day at the range, but was upset that I only needed to fire 4 rounds to get sub-MOA. Managed a 2.125" grouping of 10 shots at 200 yards during break-in using 68gr. hp, so I'm very optimistic this will turn into a good rifle for bench shooting. Loading the blind box is somewhat cumbersome, but I'm hand fe...eding it and was going to modify it with a single shot follower anyway. The stock is pretty homely but I'm in no hurry to replace it since the gun seems to shoot just fine as is. Mounted an old Tasco 16x scope on it for break-in, but considering how it is shooting for starters I'm in no hurry to replace it either. Looking forward to see how it responds to heavier loads. Great service from Bud's on this order, and in addition to their good price Savage has a $100 rebate program going on. more

This rifle was initially shooting some horizontal strings. I checked the barrel for free-floating and found that there were some high spots on the stock contacting the barrel. Also, the stock to barrel main bolt was loos...e. Since the stock is synthetic, I simple removed the barrel and action, and used some fine sandpaper to knock down the high spots inside the barrel groove of the stock. It took just a few minutes. I also made sure to tighten the stock-to-barrel bolts adequately. After another trip to the range, I was getting 1" groups with some ammo and 1.5" groups with another. The magazine is internal and does not have a drop-plate. Therefore, to unload it, you put the safety in it's middle position and run the bolt to extract/eject each cartridge. It's taking a little getting used to loading the internal magazine as the cartridges want to roll to one side or the other. This gun is terrific for the price, but if I had it to do over, I would probably buy the same model but with a removable magazine. more
