Bloodied Hands and Nothing to Show For It
I spent seven years in the Army, never had any trouble with any firearm....until this one. Just took it out of the box, my hands are covered with blood and I still cannot operate the slide release one-handed. Taking the ...weapon apart still eludes me, the detailed, photo-laden instructions not withstanding. DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF GARBAGE! more

    Love at first squeeze
I have very wide palms and short fingers and am picky about my guns and knives, well I choose m&p over a 1911 any day. I've put 5000 rounds through these beauties without so much as a hiccup( i do thoroughly clean af...ter each use). And it fits my hand like its custom made for me. more

    Good Buy
This pistol is much lighter than my other 9mm pistol. I take it apart for cleaning and lubricanton at no problem. I shoot several round of ammo and there were no jam. I am happy with this

    Best Feeling, Shooting, Reliable Gun.
You can trust a Smith & Wesson M&P handgun with your life! Easy to take apart to clean. Very accurate. Very smoothe- shooting. Only Beretta 92, 96 will have a feel in your hand like this. It feels like you've alw...ays owned it. If you don't believe me, try to find a friend that already has one and shoot it or try handling one at the store. I have had the .45, .40, and 9mm of this gun many times. (I have a bad habit of selling & trading my guns) but, this one I'm keeping. It is now the only handgun I own for home and carry. more

    great first pistol
I purchased this gun for plinking, 9 mm ammo is a lot cheaper than my 44 mag rounds. Out of the the box 2.5 inch group @15 yes. Not bad for a novice pistol shooter.300 rounds no fails, and real easy take down and cleaning.... Very happy! more

    Best decision yet
Just picked up this gun before Thanksgiving and I'm glad I did. I've been looking for a reliable full size hand gun and being a large man (6' 5") I wanted something that fit in my hand and didn't feel lost. This has... the size and weight that I was looking for as well as the power to stop whatever I need to. more

    S&W M&P 9 Pro
Very pleased with this gun. Really like the feel and accuracy. Very accurate and easy to shoot. I went to Cabelas on a Saturday and they only had the display model left. The salesperson suggested that I order one at and have it shipped to the store. I went home and ordered it on Saturday and it was delivered to the store on Monday and ready for pick up!!! Excellent experience with Cabelas and this firearm. more

    Awesome Pistol!
Recently bought this pistol from Bass Pro and right out of the box it shot great! Shot a few different brands of ammo thru it and it shot flawlessly with each one. Pistol comes with two mags and 3 interchangeable back st...raps to customize a perfect grip. The CORE is a great shooting gun with that great feel. You will not be disappointed with this purchase. I already own a couple M&P 9c's, happy to finally add the CORE to my collection. more

I purchased the 9mm Core. I mounted a Vortex Venom on it, and it has become my favorite handgun. I own 4 different m&ps. Everyone that has shot this gun loves it. It's comfortable to shoot and very accurate. I wish t...hey also made the CORE in a 45 acp. If they do, I'll be getting that one too. more

    I love this gun!
I bought this pistol a couple of months back and am thoroughly pleased with my purchase. It is reliable (fired 1000+ rounds through it with only 2 misfires), accurate, and has a very controllable recoil. Perfect for home... defense or the range. Overall this is a great gun and compares well with other pistols in its class. I enjoyed this gun so much I just bought a second one for my wife. more

    American made
American made! Flawless function, different size back straps for a custom fit. Over all a very dependable gun. Best of all, What makes a gun accurate is sight picture and trigger function as it relates to each individual... shooter. There is a lot of after market stuff out there for this popular gun. Which is a plus to make this fit each shooter. I made a few changes in the trigger and internals added a rubber grip wrap and a different front and rear sight to fit my personal needs. Which made this an extremely accurate pistol given my personal variables. more

    Excellent Hand Guns
I have a M&P compact in 40 cal I purchased 7 yrs. ago and like it.Excellent accuracy.Especially like the trigger, best I've found in a semi-auto.Don't know how many rounds I've put through it--all I know is that it fu...nctions flawlessly.Good, solid firearm that I would trust in any self defence situation.I purchased a M&P Shield recently also in 40 cal and can say the same things about it as I said about the M&P compact.Great handgun. The Shield is more slimmer & shorter which makes it more comfortable for carry which is why I bought it.Love the 40 cal cartridge. The only complaint I have is the Shield magazines. Why S&W put such stiff springs in them is beyond me.You could replace the front springs in your 54 Chevy with them and not know the difference. You need a mag loader to load the mags or kiss your thumbs & nails good bye. more

Great gun and Made in America,
Started out to buy the Glock 22, then looked at the Springfield XD. Ultimately found the SW M&P 9 mm. Had a far superior feel and shoots great. Looks better than all three and plenty accurate. Springfield is made in ...Croatia. Glock mainly in Austria, with some part in the USA. SW is all American. Plus, I selected the thumb safety for added safety. more

    Great gun
The people at Smith and Wesson take all there hand guns very seriously. This hand gun is great I would not recommend M&P40 I would insist on it for your home for the range for your life. Go ahead and buy another hand... gun, but if your life depends on what is in your hand when trouble comes your way. There is no other option .This hand gun will give you years of trouble free service. Just clean it periodically. more

    Great Pistol, Great Value
I'm a bit of a re-entry shooter so took my time trying to find a good modern 9mm handgun. Glock was an obvious one to look at as they are popular and my father has a Glock 17 that is a real nice weapon. I looked at them ...all. The guy helping me the other day at BP was a young nice patient guy that let me take my time and look and hold everything. He steered me a bit towards the Glocks and the Springfield. I was mulling that over and started looking at S&W and ask him about those. He smiled and said, "Yeah, Smith & Wesson! Gun felt great. Felt heavier but better balanced than the G17, not sure if it is heavier. I took it to the range with my pop and we had a ball! He liked the M&P over his G! So did I! Seems easy to take care of and like a good book I can hardly put it down! Dead accurate, less kick than I thought. more

    Awesome Pistol
I have the 9mm version and absolutely love it. It is extremely accurate and a fun pistol to shoot. I bought this to use in competitions. I installed a Doctor Red Dot sight on it, which was very simple to do with the base... plates that come with in the box. Not only is this pistol a great shooter, but with the sleek lines and the red dot it looks impressive and I get a lot of questions about it at the range. more

    Outstanding Guns
I now have three M&Ps. All in .40 S&W. Sub-compact, compact and full size. I like these guns so much that I will be purchasing another in Pro Series C.O.R.E. Plan on pitting a Leupold red dot on it. As some compl...aints state, the trigger pull is a little heavy. The M&Ps were designed this way. With no external safety, the trigger is considered the safety. I have never had a problem with miss feeds in any of my M&Ps. The interchangeable back strap is a big plus. Allowing you to fit the gun to most any size hand. Most of the other complaints have some validity. Just remember, you are purchasing a factory mass produced firearm. If you want something super smooth in all features, go ahead and spend 3-5 times more money on a custom firearm. For the money, you can't go wrong with an M&P. more

    Good pistol
So far so good. I put about 50 rounds through it today. Just cheaper FMJ ammo so far with no problems. It's more accurate than I am. Shooting from a rest at 25 yards, it shot a 3-4 inch group today which is plenty g...ood for a production pistol. I think takedown and cleaning is pretty simple, but I am used to the shield 9mm and they have the exact same procedure. more

Easy to learn, shoots well, great gun
I bought this gun about a month ago. I was considering this gun and a Glock 17. The deciding factor was grip. It is very comfortable. At the range, I put about 300 rounds through it. It shot consistently. I did not have ...any problems with it. It is very easy to field strip and easy to clean. I have been teaching my 13 year old daughter how to shoot and she took to this pistol. She was able to group consistently without ever shooting before now. I am looking to pickup the compact or the shield. Frankly, the grip is so great, the compact will probably be the choice. more

    Comfortable grip- accurate.
As a new shooter, I am still finding what works. I keep coming back to renting the M&P lines at the range because of the comfortable grips as well as the accuracy. Being a beginner, I am still learning but it seems d...ifferent guns aren't as accurate a shot for me as M&P- I'm sure the grip makes a difference but I also think this M&P is just a really well made gun and is accurate. Nice option for home defense and interchangeable backstraps are a really useful feature, especially for smaller hands. Considering purchasing this full size M&P 9mm. more

    Flawless Full-size
Having been thoroughly pleased with my M&P9c for two years, I went ahead and added a full size M&P9. It has operated flawlessly from the first shot, and after 142 rounds, has maintained its perfection. As with it...s sibling, it is solidly built and extremely comfortable to shoot--the interchangeable grips just fit the hand. This is a great option for the range or for home defense. Did I mention the two included magazines each hold 17 rounds? Easy take-down, easy to clean, super reliable. Another fantastic offering from Smith & Wesson's M&P line. more

    A real workhorse
I purchased this model in 2010 and could not be happier or more satisfied. Out of the box, it required minor adjustment to be dead-on accurate, and it's remained so to this day. I've put in excess of 50K rounds through t...his weapon, and it has jammed only twice--both times after it had been fired in excess of 200 times, and both times with (perhaps substandard) hand loads. It has always performed exactly as it should. more

I have been shooting pistols since I was 12 years old and anymore, not easily impressed. I look at every handgun and want to know how well it will group. Sometimes it is a waste of money to find out first hand. With the ...C.O.R.E., it is definitely not a waste. It is a fun pistol to shoot. I just shot a 4 inch group at 45 yds. with a 25 mph side wind. I have a Burris Fastfire III on it which was also a great addition. Sure the trigger isn't like a Sig, but it is striker fired with the safety built in the trigger. You will overcome it. I purchased this pistol for a critter gitter, not self defense, paper shooting, or shooting competition. I plan on taking it 'yote calling next winter for anything under 50 yards. I know a lot of people write reviews and I am about as particular as they come. You won't be disappointed if you buy this pistol. more

Great gun, my primary home defense gun..
This gun is great. Feeds/shoots every brass ammo I have ever put in it (about 2500 rounds so far). Very reliable. Smith M & P CORE 5" is the Real Thing
I have several M & P pistols, but everything about the 5" barrel CORE model reigns supreme above the others. There is a balance to this particular pistol that the 4.25" pistols do not posses. It is light fo...r a competition handgun, but it shoots better than most modified 1911 style pistols. The iron sights are amazing, and from personal experience, they do co-witness nicely with the S & W recommended optic choices. Even the enhanced grips prove worthwhile. If you do compete, there are reasonably priced trigger improvement possibilities that will take the trigger pull under 3 pounds...and go for a reflex sight. The slide is already milled for it. Your groups will instantly shrink. Can you carry with an optic? For sure! There are many holsters that leave a deep enough cut on the front to allow for the optics. With optic battery life up to 4 years, left on full-time, there is no reason not to go red dot--and if the battery goes away, you can still see your iron sights. Awesome! S & W scores 100%. more

    February 7, 2014
  • 80

    Excellent Choice in competition pistols
This pistol has it all. It is competition optic ready. If you don't need optics, you probably shouldn't consider it. The iron sights co-witness the optic in case of a battery failure during competition. The factory pull is a miss for a competition oriented pistol so designated as C.O.R.E. Trigger work is inexpensive in relation to having a standard Smith M & P slide milled to accept a reflex optic. Smith includes mounting plates for 5 different sights, but all of them are pretty high-end. Seems like a mount for a Burris Fast Fire III should have been included. more

I am very happy with my M&P , the price , the look , the feel in your hands, the performance and reliability it's had since I bought it 6 months ago. I work armed security and the feel and ease to draw the gun w...hen practice shooting at the range makes me feel very comfortable carrying it. I switched from my G22 gen 4 to this one, but don't get me wrong my g22 is my go to gun on the streets and at home. The new M&P was to not beat up my glock at work but let me tell you it can take more than what I thought, rain and cold weather sun and heat , dusty winds it's hold up very well.  more

    The Glock alternative...for real.
The M&P is a real sturdy and unbelievably reliable pistol. The ergonomics are a slight improvement over glocks. However one clear advantage is the stock sights are much better than glocks. I pulled my M&P out of ...the box. it was soaking wet in packing oil. literally dripping off. I fired off 150 rds in short succession with no problems. the trigger is a bit mushy compared to glocks. however some practice can over come this. this gun feels and looks like a $800 handgun. The one negative is there are some known issues with accuracy. The barrel tolerances can get out of spec with respect to chamber and bore. This can mean reduced accuracy past 15 yds. If S&W could get a hold of this problem, this would be the greatest polymer frame handgun ever made. more

    Great fitting gun
I've owned my M&P 9mm for 5 years now and love it. Compared to the Springfield XDs, the M&P is much lighter and fells better in your hand. About the same weight of a Glock Gen 3, but the M&P fits my hand...s perfect. The ergonomics of the M&P make it very attractive. However, my biggest compliant was the trigger. I wanted more of a Glock or Springfield trigger. After some research online, I order new competition springs and a new trigger. This gun now shoots like a dream and I consider it my range/competition gun. I also scored perfect on my Texas CHL shooting exam with my M&P. Every one who shoots my M&P 9mm loves it. Highly recommend the M&P to anyone and will always have in my arsenal. From a gunsmithing standpoint the M&P take more work than a Glock and is probably on par with the Springfield XDs. I'm now considering buying the M&P Pro cause I love the M&P line of pistols. more

    Finding a Fit
My interest in semiautomatic handguns gets renewed ever couples years only to be met by the disappointing reality that I just can't find one that fits my hand. You see, not only are my hands small, my index finger is onl...y 2" long (birth defect). It's a real challenge to be able to hold a handgun properly and reach the trigger with enough surface area of my fingertip to get a steady squeeze. The only success I've had in the past was with my Smith & Wesson J frame fired with the hammer engaged in single action mode. A local indoor gun range advertised that they had several rental guns available to "try before you buy" and I thought this would be a good way to satisfy my curiosity. The gun guys at the range were very patient and helpful. It took a while but I tried 9 different pistols in 3 different calibers before arriving at a winner. Although I desired a full-size/high capacity service style pistol, my assumption going in was that the slimmer concealed carry style would be my only option. I was pleasantly surprised to discover some new designs that were realistic candidates. I started with the Smith & Wesson M&P Shield 9mm and liked it from the first shot. The grip fit and the trigger had a very clean break. The shots weren't in a tight group but better than I'd ever shot with a semiautomatic pistol. My next trial was to be the Springfield XD-S 9mm but, unfortunately, they didn't have any Springfield XD's to try. Apparently, there is a major safety recall and all their XD's had been sent back to the factory for a fix. Hmm... So, next I tried a Kahr CW 9mm and a Kahr CW .40S&W. Already owning a Kahr K 9mm, I thought this would wind up being the perfect choice. However, after shooting the M&P Shield, my performance with the Kahr's was disappointing. I hit the target but shots were spread out and it just didn't feel right. Trying the same gun in .40S&W was interesting. The recoil didn't seem that bad but the pattern on the target proved that I had less control. At this point, one of the gun guys suggested that I might try the Smith & Wesson M&P Compact model even through the grip was wider than on the M&P Shield. I had serious doubts but figured this was the time to find out. They gave me a Compact 9mm. It felt awkward in my hand as it had a thicker and shorter grip - my pinky finger was dandling. I shot it better than the Kahr's but not at well as the Shield. However, it did prove that I could reach and squeeze the trigger even with the wider handle. I told the gun guy thanks but not for me and moved back down to the concealed carry sizes. The Walther PPS 9mm was next on the list. It's a funky little gun about the size of the Shield but with unique european styling. I didn't like the way it operated. The groups were not as good as with the Shield. Probably a very good gun but just not my taste. Then I tried the Sig Sauer 938 9mm. It's a beautiful gun that looks like a baby 1911. In fact, it has the exact same single action of the 1911 that so many swear by. I really wanted to like it more. My finger easily reached the trigger and it was pretty accurate. In the end though, the single action is not what I'm looking for right now. Someday I'll probably have one but not now. I was about to give up when the gun guys said that if I liked the S&W M&P Shield but didn't plan on using it as a concealed carry weapon I should really try altering my grip a bit and shoot the full sized M&P. Okay, let's go for it - let me see the big M&P .45auto. Surprise. I can handle it pretty well but nowhere near as comfortable to shoot as the small Shield 9mm. Step down (not really down - more sideways) to the M&P .40S&W. Wow. It shot it even better than the .45auto. Finally they hand me the M&P 9mm, with a knowing grin. Groups better than the Shield 9mm, feels like a real gun and holds 17 rounds in the magazine. So, armed with this experience, I made the trek to Cabelas. It was a real struggle deciding between the Smith & Wesson M&P Shield and the full size M&P 9mm. The Cabelas exclusive kit that came with the full size service style M&P was a good deal and that's what I bought. Next day, I went to the indoor range and fired 200 rounds through it. So far, I'm thrilled with the gun. It's easy too shot, had no jams or problems at all, and I could hit the broadside of a barn with it. In fact, I tried shooting out to 15 yards with the last magazine and actually hit the 10" Shoot 'n See target a few times. That's something I would have never thought possible for me and a hand gun. The loading device that came as part of the kit (and I had dismissed as a gimmick) made it almost too easy to keep all three of the 17 round magazines full. It's amazing how quickly one can burn through the ammo shooting a high capacity semi auto. Glad I bought a can of 500 rounds and a cleaning kit when I got the gun. Be safe, have fun, shoot hard, shoot often. more

    Best handgun!
I've shot lot's of different guns since I was twelve years old, but this was my first purchase. I bought the 9mm full size for my concealed carry, thought it would be difficult to conceal, but I was way wrong. Even durin...g the summer with just a t-shirt, my wife couldn't even tell when I was carrying. I bought this gun back in June, have put close to 1500 rounds through it, not a single jam yet. It's also incredibly easy to take apart and clean. I use some CLP and it cleans it up good. Love this gun! more

I just bought this gun after reviewing it for almost 2 months. It's got a great feel in the hand and it's almost as light as my Glock 22 gen 4. Also for its full size its easy and comfortable to conceal to your... 3 o clock inside the waistband. Accurate at 15 yards but don't expect to get 3" groups at 25yrds or more. Great for self and home defense, the 17 + 1 rounds is more than enough.  more

Bought the M&P 9 about 6 months ago and love it. Went in wanting to pickup a ruger sr9 but were sold out. Sales staff in Mitchell, SD was very helpful and knowledgable about all their guns and recommended the m&p.... It has performed beautifully with tight groupings. Muzzle flip is nonexistent. My 80 lb. 12 year old son can pop off 2-3 quick shots with ease and be right back on target. Shot nearly 1000 of cheap $10/100 rounds through it with absolutely zero issues. Thanks to the Mitchell staff for directing me to this gun. more

    Nice Pistol
Very well made pistol, feels great in your hand and is easily concealed. Has an ambedextrious thumb safety for added security unlike the Glock, huge benefit in my opinion and comes with 3 interchangeable palm swell grip ...backstraps that can be changed out to fit most any size hand comfortably. My only complaint would be the trigger pull is too heavy, otherwise would be a solid 5 stars. more

    great gun
I cant say enough good things about this gun. I am a part time gunsmith so I have handled and shot tons of guns. with the ammo being in short supply, I have put many different brands and bullet weights through it without... the first hitch. this is the gun I carry- so I would depend on this gun unconditionally. my son carries a sig and I wouldn't trade him for two of them. more

After a 6-month long search for the best handgun for me and its intended protection/defense uses it came down to 3 choices for my first handgun. It was not until I went in and handled all 3 that I decided the feel of the... gun in my hand and the Smith&Wesson M&P-9 was for me. Good balance, nice fit, and the slide lock on both sides was an added bonus. First trip to the range and all 100 rounds hit the target and there was very limited kick or sway, then a basic handgun class where it went great! Shot 200+ rounds without a single problem, and the instructor even gave it a few shots and proclaimed it was a great engineered gun and a great choice. Now my wife wants a S&W M&P-22 as her first gun. more

    Excellent Hand Gun
I bought the M&P 40 two tone. What an awesome deal for the price that includes: Gun, 3 Interchangable Grips, Gun Holster, 3 Magazines, 2 Clip Mag Holder, Ammo Speed Loader, Gun Case, Gun lock, and Manual. Took it to ...the range and put about 500 rounds. The first 50 were off just a little. It was getting broken in and after that it shot like a dream. Not a single problem with it at all. S&W M&P 9mm Excellent first gun
I bought this gun less than a month ago. It is the very first firearm I have ever owned and think it is a great value for the money. I have put 500 rounds through this gun in the past few weeks with zero FTL or FTF issue...s. I bought this for home protection as well as fun at the range. The 9mm is perfect as it doesn't kick as hard as I'm told a .40 or .45 would so the other half is comfortable firing it as well. A .40 or .45 might have been too much for her. I'm really enjoying this gun and looking at concealed carry options such as the S&W Shield as well. more

    not a plinker
This is a big handgun (I use the 40 cal.) but not nearly the kick I was expecting. First hand gun I've used in a very long time. Fired 650 rounds in two day training for work. I don't own one (yet) but will likely do so ...shortly. The gun is set up for either right or left handed and can be broken down quickly and put back for either hand. Comes with three grip sizes for pretty much any hand size. I have the largest size but trained with a very small gal who is quite comfortable with the smallest size. I found the mag release a bit awkward to use quickly for a fast reload but not too bad. I've talked to some who switch the mag release to the opposite side and use the index finger to release. Don't know how well that works and we're not allowed to do that at work. Quite pricey to use at the range, even if you do your own re-loads but I for one don't intend to make it a regular habit of shooting a lot with it at the range. Nice feel and balance, not too heavy and, as stated, not a whole lot of recoil. more

    M&P 9 Full Size
I was torn between this and a glock, and am glad I went with the M&P. Feels Good in the hand with interchangeable grips and beaver tail. Has much better three dots sights than a glock, and has options. I went with an... ambidextrous thumb safety which is optional, and is capable of firing with out the magazine in it which is also optional. It has a good trigger and is able to switch the mag release to either side. I also love how simple it is to dissemble and clean. PS also comes with two magazines. more

    Can't shoot it enough.
I bought my two tone M&P at Cabela's about a year ago to add to the full size M&P I already owned, and the Shield I bought last Spring. The two tone is set up with a Streamlite TLR-1 and Blade Tech tactical I also had S&W send me some flat earth palm swells as I prefer the monotone look, like the VTAC model. My other full size M&P carries a Crimson Trace laser and CT Lightguard which came with a slide holster to fit. Both are great bedside and carry guns. I do find myself carrying the Shield a lot as well, as the tacslide holster fits it well. All 3 are 9mm. I'm looking to get the M&P in .22 for my son. He's a lefty, and it's the only .22 I've found with a reversible mag release and ambi slide stop. By the way, I can't remember having a problem with any of them, with somewhere close to 10,000 rounds put through them together. more

    Amazing firearm
I was on the market about a year ago for a handgun and looked at the M&P line. After reading other reviews and looking up videos of testing with them I decided to get one. When I found the 2 tone kit at Cabelas I fel...l in love with it even more. I have had the handgun for just over a year and have about 1000 rounds through it with no problems. The range kit is a super deal with the 3 magazines, 3 back straps, and holsters. I have been looking for a M&P 40C or even a M&P 40 SHIELD for a cary gun. I would recomend this to anybody and everybody that wants a great firearm for an amazing price. more

    It's a keeper
I had tried three other major brand striker fired .40S&W handgins, and I kept one fo them for a long while. It served me well, but after shooting a friend's S&W M&P40, I decided to sell mine and buy one of th...ese M&P's for my own. Had I bought this one first, I would have never tried the others. I decided on this Dark Earth Carry kit because I liked the looks and 3 mags is a plus. The holster rides a little low for my liking, and doesn't have that "snap" I'd like from a kydex holster. But as for the pistol:This is the softest shooting .40 S&W handgun I have ever shot or owned. I use the smallest palmswell adapter as I have very thick hands and that is the one that works best for me. I don't know how else to describe it but it just is an amazing fit for my hand. more

Smith & Wesson M&P Pistols are awesome!
The M&P line of handguns are one of the best production lines I've seen from from S&W in a while. I am very impressed with the design and ergonomics of these weapons. The ability to change the grips out in order better fit your hand help tremendously. These guns are also very accurate right out of the box too. In addition, I will have to say that S&W has one of the best customer service departments in the business. I purchased the 9mm right after Christmas, I have put 400 rounds thru it. The... trigger does take a little bit to get use to it, As far as using the sears deactivation lever, I didn't have a problem with, I liked the safety feature of it; you don't need to use it if you don't want to. I had previously owned a Glock23 / .40 cal., a S&W 686 plus .357 Magnum revolver and a Beretta FS92 INOX 9mm. After doing much research between the new Glock GEN 4's, Springfield Armory XDM's and the M&P's and re...ading review after review I finally bought the M&P 40 almost 3 weeks ago. Of the 3 pistols I have owned this is hands down the best pistol I have owned and shot. It feels very comfortable in my hand with the factory medium grip and is very accurate out of the box. I have put over 400 rounds through it without a hitch. This feels to have less recoil than my older Glock 23. I am planning to switched to small grip to see if I can tighten up grouping which is about 4" at 15 yards. Keep in mind I am not an avid shooter, but plan to practice much more. Cabela's was extremely helpful in the purchase process and going through the features of the 3 manufactures I was looking at. I plan to get another M&P, the Shield in 9mm or maybe the 40, for the reviews are very good on it as a concealed pistol. Likely the 9mm though, just like to have more rounds if I plan to carry concealed. You will not regret buying a M&P! Bottom line try all the pistols you think you like and close your eyes and buy the one that feels the best in your hands. You have to feel comfortable with your choice, my was the M&P series and no regrets! more

I just recently purchased this gun on Friday at Cabela's. Shot 300 rounds through it already and am very pleased with the gun. The gun is breaking in nice and very accurate. The kits that come with the gun, the carry and... range kit are perfect. The only thing I didn't care for too much was the Kydex holster it came with. Smith & Wesson M&P Family
When I completed my CHL class I needed to qualify. The only hand gun I had at that time, to qualify with, was my S&W Model 10 4” revolver. If you qualify with a revolver, you can only carry a revolver, but if y...ou qualify with a semi automatic you can carry either. My instructor had a S&W M&P 9mm that he said I could use to qualify. He brought it to the range the night I was to qualify. This was the first time I ever fired a SA, much less the pistol he brought for me to qualify with; my score was 250 out of 250. That was enough for me to know what I would carry. Not only did I qualify that night, but so did my wife, my daughter, and my son-in-law using the same gun, not with my score, but higher than I thought they would qualify with. Great size
I purchased the two tone kit recently in .40 after debating for months between the XD and the M&P. I shot an XD and they are definitely great guns, but I just could not get over how much bigger the XD was while smaller capacity than the M&P. Granted, when you move up to the XDm, you get more capacity, but it also costs more and you are only gaining one round capacity in .40 and two in 9mm. I was truly surprised at the size difference between the two. The M&P has been a great shooter for me and I absolutely love the gun. The two-tone colors are hit or miss. I personally like the coloring a lot but one of my buddies didn't, so I guess that is up to personal preference, but what isn't debatable is the fact that the kit is a great value. I also prefer the holster in the M&P kit as opposed to the XD's. The XD's holster leaves the bottom half of the barrel exposed to potential scratching and the M&P's covers the whole barrel. As a shoooter, the M&P is very comfortable and has very little recoil in .40 as compared to most 9mm's I have shot. Add in the fact that you can order a factory S&W 357 SIG barrel for cheap and reuse the magazines, or order a 9mm barrel and get 9mm magazines; you can basically have three guns for the price of one! more

    Best 9mm regardless of price
This is an excellent 9mm. I highly recommend it. I am a Glock man and I like this even better. Note to people who do not understand:The lever on side is "NOT" a slide release! It is a Slide "LOCK" you... need to pull back the slide just a small amount "THEN" release the "LOCK" lever! Crazy accurate in the right hands. Lifetime Warranty! Superbly made pistols you can depend on
I bought a S&W M&P .40 Compact model in 2007 on the recommendation of a salesman at a local gun dealer and at first I thought I made a mistake. I didn't like how the pistol shot and I felt it was very inaccurate.... But after shooting it more I figured out all the issues weren't the guns fault but my own. more

    Great Gun
I've been looking for a great reliable gun for a while now and I have found it. Shoots great, it's powerful, accurate, and not a lot of recoil. Gun is large so it is hard to conceal carry. Have shot 150 rounds through it... so far with no problem. Even the wife enjoys shooting it. Happy that it came with 2 mags. It does have a long trigger pull but it's not that bad. Overall this is my new favorite gun and I plan and using it for a long, long while. I give it a 95/100. more

Great gun for a first time buyer.
I bought this gun today after many months of looking at Glock's, 1911's and Sig's. The reason I chose this gun was because not only is the M&P a solid reliable gun, it also came in the carry and range kit. The by bladetech are great! Also, 3 magazines is a huge plus as well, the Uplula loader is fantastic. I put 100 rounds through it tonight with no issues. Looking forward to shooting it more in the future! more

I chose M&P over competion(G17,SR9,24/7) due to warr anty(lifetime), extras, price, quality and ergonomics(my wife uses it also). will need plenty of break in time due to being tight. can b taken down w/o tool(u can ...pull trigger instead of using sear) there are others with closer tolerances but M&P is close. slide release needs to be worked in due to being tight. mag loader is nec. b cus mag spring r super stiff. KICK AXE looks. cant comment on accuracy as i havnt shot it yet(I cant wait!!!) if ur considering buying competition, watch 'youtube' reviews for some reviews. my first handgun and im stoked!!! more

    M&P 2tone Kit a Hit!
I am already a fan of this handgun, and own one in 9mm. When I saw Cabela's offering this in the two tone range kit, I could not pass up the deal. 3 mags, 3 palm swells, one mag loader, one holster. Really? all this plus... the very fact that you have a super sweet gun. Fit and finish were flawless. I was able to hit and group out a 5 inch circle at 25 yards- This is my home defense gun, my other M&P was gladly taken by my brother- Now we go to the range together in style! more

    Best handgun I own
I went looking for an upgrade to my newbie pistols ( a pair of Hi-Points) and boy was this an upgrade. My first pistols went bang every time I pulled the trigger and served their purpose, but as I learned more about shoo...ting I wanted something of higher quality. I bought the M&P 9 based on reviews and a little time I spent handling the pistol at the new Cabela's in Marysville. The staff made this purchase a great experience even in the midst of the chaos of a new store opening and non-stop gun purchases. I might have found a similar package for less online, but the expertise and personal attention made a real difference for me.The fit and finish is outstanding; every component of the package is very well made with no visible flaws. The M&P 9 balances well in my hand, and the choice of backstraps gives the gun a customized feel. I was amazed the first time I stripped the gun down to clean it just how light the polymer frame was compared to the stainless steel slide. But when the magazine is loaded and inserted, the balance feels just right to me.My son and I took the M&P out to the range for the first time yesterday and ran through about 250 rounds of Federal and Remington UMC with no failures. The accuracy was impressive without any adjustment to the sights. Both my son and I realized that this gun is reliably accurate but also revealed many flaws in our shooting technique. I know that our skills will improve when practicing with this gun in the future.Bottom line for me: it's made in America, extremely high quality, reliable, and accurate. I feel the Cabela's package is a good value with the holster and extra magazines. Now I'll be saving my money again for another one. more

Bought this gun (9mm) a couple months ago and i think its just ok. I would have liked to have a thumb safety, which this one is lacking. I took it shooting and only had about 300 rounds through it until i had to take it ...back. The front sight became loose and almost fell off. Very outstanding firearm
I purchased my M&P40 1 month ago and I will admit I'm very impressed / pleased with this firearm. It has both met and completely exceeded my expectations of what a quality semiautomatic handgun should be.I've taken my... M&P40 to the shooting range a few times and have fired approximately 500 rounds through it using ammunition made by Mag tech,Federal,Remmington,Winchester. You may hear stories of various handguns experiencing issues with FTF:Fail to fire, FTE:Fail to eject which is why many people will tell you to experiment with various types of ammo to find what works and what doesn't.Well I'm here to let you know all ammo I fired from my M&P40 had absolutely no issues with either FTF or FTE.Also the accuracy of this firearm is outstanding with hardly any noticable kick when firing.Field stripping is very simple and has only 4 parts:Slide, barrel, receiver, spring. and cleaning this is a breeze.I will highly recommend to anyone who's reading this that if your seriously considering buying a 40 cal.handgun then this is the one you will want! more

Still Needs Just a Bit More.
I purchased a S&W M&P 40 recently and have fired a thousand or so rounds at varying ranges. So far, this pistol has left a few distinct impressions.Pros:-Ergonomic; I can switch the grips based on how I feel at t...he time.-Low Barrel axis; the muzzle rise, while significant, is not as much as similar full sized .40's.-Accurate; after considerable practice, this gun is capable of excellent accuracy for a .40.-Low Recoil; the overall recoil feels less than other .40's I've fired, likely due to the overall design of the grip, beavertail, low axis, recoil spring,etc.-Reliable; I have not had a single malfunction so far. I clean every two hundred rounds or so. more

Bought this gun because of a few reviews I've read on it recently. Wow am I happy! The Perfect Gun
When I purchased this gun a couple of months back it was my first ever gun purchase. I have shot many guns before this one and was never really comfortable with them. My intentions were to go over and buy the S&W .40 (because of Price) but ended up purchasing the M&P .40. This was a very good decision on my part. This gun is perfect in every way. My wife and I liked it so much I purchased another one a couple of weeks back. I actually got an amazing deal on a used one at my local range. I got a very lightly used M&P .40, 6 magazines, night sights, and a consoled carry holster all for about $500. If you are hesitant about buying this gun don’t be. Even if you are hesitant about buying a used one, don't be. They are a good reliable gun. Also think about this if you don’t like it you can always trade it or sell it for a good price because it is a very popular gun that a lot of gun shops and ranges want for resale. Also look at YouTube videos they are full of info from consumers of this product. more

    Great Semi-Auto
I purchased this Smith and Wesson M&P40 a couple weeks ago. It is my first semi-automatic. I read a lot of reviews and spent time in the store checking out different models. The Smith felt the best in my hand. It als...o looks great. The weight is perfect - substantial enough to steady your grip but not too heavy. S&W M&P 40
This is my first S&W gun, have been partial to Ruger's in the past. Overall most features are acceptable, but for a high performance/price gun it has failings in a couple areas. First the slide release is a stamped p...iece of metal with rough edges, I could not release the slide without taking pressure of the lock. Honing off the rough edges with my ceramic stone, it finally worked correctly. Second the trigger pull is rough and coarse. The hammer sear has an irregular surface and again the ceramic stone was applied to create a smooth polished surface. Same with the sear release, a sharp edge drags against the sear and with the long pull of the trigger, in my opinion, creates more of a "jerk" activity than a continuous "squeeze" on the trigger. Read somewhere "after 1500 rounds the trigger action smooths out", that works out to a lot of wasted ammo and frustration of getting some accuracy on the target. For somebody not comfortable doing what I did, sure is an extra expense at a gunsmith to get it to shoot correctly. more

    Fantastic firearm!
I purchased the M&P 45 in full size and am extremely happy with it. Absolutely no FTF's or FTE's. Hit the bullseye on the first shot. Recoil was less than expected, no more than my Beretta PX4 .40, and fully manageab...le. The replaceable back-straps made it easy to fit to my hand. Trigger pull was smooth and reasonable for a DAO action. This was my 7th handgun and my new favorite! I totally recommend this pistol for a high quality, American built weapon. M&P 40 kit Great Value, Great Gun!
Received as an anniversary gift from the wife. She did good! The amount of extras that come in the kit for only a small premium over just getting the M&P 40 by itself make this kit an extreme value. As far as the fir...earm; It handles great. I have always had a preference to revolvers but this firearm just feels balanced perfectly in the hand (the added ability for three different grip sizes straight out of the box insures a good fit). Straight from the box (after a simple cleaning and lube, not needed but my habit) to the range it fires perfectly with no jams or misfires (using Winchester Ranger 135 GR. JHP) and a very low felt recoil. The factory set adjustable sights were dead on out of the box with the standard three dot pattern having nice bright white dots, giving a nice center ring accuracy using standard pistol target with 4“ ring diameter bullseye at 20 yards. The trigger guard area gives plenty of room for use if you were warring gloves (something often overlooked here in the desert, but I spend a lot of time up north in bad weather conditions). After the range the takedown was a breeze allowing for simple full cleaning and care. To me the only downside to this weapon is the striker fire action that would require a round that didn’t fire to have to be manually ejected, not having an option to rotate to the next cylinder or strike the primer a second time for firing like a DA/SA (but with good quality ammunition this shouldn‘t be an issue). This just may be the replacement to my standard carry, a .357 S&W 686. more

No misfires or jams yet. The 3 grips that come with the gun will fit any size hand. My father just bought a M&P 9mm compact with the laser grip and he likes it a lot. I love this gun! It feels right in my hand.My wife and I shot several models (SA-XD9, Block, Sig 250, Ruger SR9, M&P9 and a couple others). My wife liked the XD (So did I) and I loved the M&P.I've put just over 1...000 rounds down range with NO failures of any kind (PMC, WWB, Win PDX1).The trigger pull felt fairly gritty out of the box, but smoothed out after around 600 rounds. I also did have the S&W Performance Center do an "Action Job" that reduced the trigger pull a bit and made it more smooth and consistent.I have no problem taking out the X ring on a B27 target at 20 yards.Mine does have the external ambidextrous safety, which is easy to engage/disengage. The recoil can engage the safety if your thumbs sit too close on firing.Pros:Comfortable to fireGood sightsGreat triggerReliable:Cons:The 8 round magazine for the compact (offset by S&W sending me 2 freebies as an incentive to buy (though I would have bought it anyway!)Front sight blacks out after around 75 rounds (could be the ammo) more

    My new favorite!
Like another reviewer I have always been a 1911 fan, and I still am. But the M&P40 is a real threat to my Kimber! The interchangeable backstraps feel great to me no matter which size I put on the gun, but even my wif...e--who has tiny hands--can use it with the small straps in place. This gun has one of the best grip shapes that I have ever tried. So far not a single failure of any kind, and accuracy is excellent. My particular M&P likes the 165 and 180gr rounds best, placing most loads I've tried right over the front sight. The trigger on mine is a tad heavy, but it's not bad. My buddy tried mine and now he wants one, and my Dad was so impressed with the feel of the grips that he's considering one as well. more

    M&P .40 Cal
Boy am I glad I bought the M&P instead of the Sigma. I love this gun. I bought the .40 caliber and it shoots nice. Trigger pull is a lot nicer on the M&P. Breaks down easy to clean. Holds 15 rounds in the magazin...e. Can't wait to get reloading dies and start reloading and shooting more often. more

    Excellent Choice
I was in the market for a new .45 and was looking at several different modles. The M&P in 9mm is the issue weapon at my job so I had some privious experience with it, and I own an SA XD. Hands down my new .45 M&P... is the best pistol I have ever owned or operated. The extreme comfort of the grip makes for a pleseant shooting experience. The weapons action is smooth and reliable, have not had a hang-up yet. S&W did an excellent job on the design of this weapon. more

    Favourite handgun
This has become my new favourite handgun. I have both the compact and the full size and I now plan to get the pro model. There are perhaps a dozen handguns in my house but the other 10 see very little use now. Carrying o...r playing the M&P stands out. An added bonus is the stamp on the slide which says made in USA rather than made in Croatia or Austria. An excellent handgun for the price. more

    gotta love it
When I decided to buy a new hand gun I test drove about 10 modles, and the only one that stood out to me was the m&p 40 full size. I liked everything about this gun, how the grip fit me like it was made for me, the e...ase of working the action, and releasing the magazine. Smith and Wesson broke the mold when they made this hand gun. I know that this gun will be my favorite for years to come. more
