Smith & Wesson M&P 40 Features

The Smith & Wesson M&P40 is a semi-automatic short-recoil operated pistol that uses a tilting-barrel action.  This striker-fired pistol is built into a polymer frame and has a 4.25 inch barrel set in a stainless steel slide.  The frame includes a MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rail under the barrel for mounting lasers and weapon lights.

Smith & Wesson M&P 40 Capacity

The M&P40 is chambered in .40 S&W and feeds from double-stack, single-feed magazines with a standard capacity of 15 rounds.  10-round magazines exist for users in states with capacity restrictions, and 30 round extended magazines are available from aftermarket manufacturers.

Smith & Wesson M&P 40 Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The M&P40 was designed during the era of replaceable back straps for the grips, and the M&P is shipped with three different sizes.  Replacing the straps includes dropping the magazine, twisting the nub on the bottom of the grip to remove the strap pin, taking the grip off and switching it with a different size panel.  All fire controls are ambidextrous and the magazine release is easily swapped from left to right.

Smith & Wesson M&P 40 Fit & Finish

The M&P series of pistols has undergone many design overhauls, though all of them employ durable materials with coatings that prevent damage to the components from weather and wear.  Almost all metal components are made of stainless steel.  There is plenty of aftermarket support for the M&P if you are looking to upgrade any parts.

Fit and Finish

Smith & Wesson M&P 40 Concealability

Concealability
Measuring 7.5 inches long, 5.5 inches tall and 1.25 inches wide, the M&P 40 is only slightly easier to conceal than a 1911.  If you plan to carry an M&P2.0 inside the waistband, it is recommended that you wear an undershirt as the grip texturing can cause irritation when held against bare skin.
