    Great Bargain Handgun
I have the SD VE version of this pistol and have had zero issues and no complaints. It packs a lot of firepower (14+1) and is pretty accurate. It is a virtual clone to a Glock at half the price. It is a compact pistol, n...ot a duty size, and with a full mag is a little hefty for concealed carry. I do carry it concealed occasionally in a belly band, but it finds most of its use in a hunting pack OR a backpack when I’m hiking in the mountains where it’s size is a plus. This pistol is a great value and completely reliable in my experience . more

    Great pistol for the money.
Love this pistol. It's Smith & Wessons copy of a Glock. It's just as accurate and reliable as my Glocks and it's around $200 to $350 dollars cheaper than most Glocks. I really like the way S&W cont...oured the sides of the slides. Have not had any malfunctions of any kind. The trigger isn't the best but you can get use to it. Well worth the money. more

    Awful gun
Bought this last Christmas; had to buy the store sample since all of the S&W .40 calibers were mis-boxed with serial numbers on the boxes not matching the serial number on the gun actually in the box (4 of them). The... salesman "convinced" me the exhibit gun would be fine as it supposedly had not been dry fired "at all". Took it to the range and it jammed with the first shot - cleaned it really well and it still jammed each and every time it was fired. My bad for being duped by the sales person. more

Great value on duty-size .40 cal
I got mine 2 yrs ago. Very accurate. Had an issue w it going into lock-back during firing. Sent to S&W, no cost (always great svc), & no issues after quick return. Very reliable w all ammo. Some do not like the l...ong trigger pull on this model. I've shot countless DA revolvers - so no problem for me. I consider it a plus for safety. It does not affect my accuracy & I can fire well, rapidly. more

    1500 rounds so far
I have had this sd40ve for about 6 months now. It is not picky on ammo. When I first bought the gun I cleaned and oiled it up. Ran 200 rounds through it. Had 2 ftf on the 2nd mag. Due to the gun not being broke in yet. I... have fired all kinda of hollow points. Just about all fmj rounds. I haven't tried to fire steel case rounds but I dont want to. I just keep it clean and oiled. About every 200 rounds I clean it. The sights are dead on, even at 50 yards. Great shooting and easy to do follow up shots. 40 s&w is not a high recoil round as you might think. I have let people that are 145 lbs shoot this gun and thay are just fine with it. Have not done one single thing to it so far. I might try and put a trigger kit in it soon but the trigger is not horrible for me. Will post back when I hit the 3000 round mark and 5000 mark. more

    Worst trigger ever!
I'm shocked that S&W is still producing this garbage. It has the worst trigger action of any pistol I've ever shot. I even replaced the trigger with the Apex upgrade and then the Garrison upgrade and it sti...ll didn't help. Buy yourself a Taurus PT140 G2C for $100 less and never look back. Much better gun and a fantastic trigger, too more

Great Gun for the Price... Very low sighted.....
I bought this gun about 3 weeks ago, and took it out to the range. It's a great gun for the price and lot of fun to shoot. I fired 150 rounds out of it. No issues with how the gun itself handled. The ergonomics of t...his gun are great, I love the way it feels in my hand. (As someone who is right handed, but left eye dominant... it's great to have a gun that can be comfortably fired in either hand) This gun is very easy to take apart, clean and put back together. It's a handgun that is almost as easy to clean as a revolver. Regrettably the sights were set extremely low. When I fired at the 30 meter range, rounds were going into the ground instead of the target. When I fired at the 10 meter range, I still wasn't on the paper. I had two friends fire it to make sure it wasn't just me.... same thing. For the rest of the day, I just aimed high to compensate for the low sights. I checked the owner's manual, the sights are only adjustable left & right, not up & down. I'm contacting Smith & Wesson in hopes that my gun just had a fluke defect and they fix it. If not, I may file down the front sight or buy after market sights. This stopped me from giving the gun 5 stars, but still not a hard thing to fix. Lastly, if you're in a state where this gun comes with 14 round magazines, buy a speed loader. It's nearly impossible load these mags to full capacity with your bare hands. more

    Really Like the SD40 VE
bought this on sale black friday 2017, saved a few bucks doing so, very basic pistol, and does have some flaws, but it's like thinking you are getting a Cadillac for the price point of a Yugo. the m&p shield is ...a bit better quality but i have seen many reviews commenting on the exact same issues, a gun fits the person not the other way around, i have put about 1000 rounds down range (50 rounds were the cheapest .40 i could find) with no ftf, fte, or mag eject issues. i was military so we took care of our weapons, proper lubrication and cleaning are crucial. the worst possible thing a person can do with a gun is buy one and go to yhe range, failure is immenent. Take it home, clean it, watch some videos about proper cleaning and lubrication, learn the weapon, know how it comes apart, then clean it again, lubricate, and then go to the range. Yes as others have said it shoots low, lollipop method works great. now to the flaws, 3 that are cheaply fixed. 1. I disliked the trigger, apex makes a replacement for about 40 dollars, installed myself, much better, also got the spring kit from them as well. 2. the sights are painted on, if you are adventurous you can get fiber optic sticks for about 3 dollars and drill yours out.(unless you have the right equipment to do so I do not recommend) or for about 50 dollars the m&p sheild sights fit perfectly, or you can invest in trijicon sights, for alot more, I have not changed my sights. 3. is a personal thing, price, for about 50 dollars more you can get the m & p shield, with some of the upgrades I discussed, or for 200+/- dollars more you can get the performance center version m&p shield which I will be buying soon. it comes with the fiber optic sights, ported barrel, but still the same trigger. Why, I ciuld not tell you. the SD40ve is a good weapon, inexpensive, and will do it's job, but remember it's a Yugo not Cadillac. more

    Not Bad
I bought this about a month ago and I have to say it is pretty good considering the price. I have ran about 100 rounds through it so far and no problems what so ever. Their is one thing though when then magazines are ful...ly loaded they tend to rattle a little, all in all not a bad gun for the price. I got it when it was in sale 300$. more

Very easy pistol to handle and carry
I bought my SD40VE about 3 months ago.I have fired many different types of firearms , from my Military time until now. I have fired over 1500 rounds through this pistol without one single misfire or failure to load. At 4...5 feet using 180gr ammo, this baby will cover a circle the size of 1/2 dollar. Fired it 18 rounds at 75 feet and landed 17 in the forehead of a silhouette. So go ahead and spend your money on higher priced guns. As for me I'll put this one up against any of them, especially for this price range. By the way, I have reloaded over 1000 spent casings fired from this gun, and they shoot as good as factory rounds. more

A good pistol for the price.
I have shot allot in my life. I come from a military back ground and have fired numerous pistols. I bought this pistol because of the S&W name, the price, and the barrel/slide are stainless. It does have one issue th...at doesn’t affect the function but it is a little annoying: the magazine has a slight rattle when loaded fully while inserted in the pistol. However, I have shot over 1,000 rounds through it without a jam, failure to feed, “stove-pipe” or any other issues. Again I have shot allot of pistols, makes and models alike. When I was in the Army we would shoot issued Berretta’s that were all the same. However, they didn’t shoot or behave the same. Every mechanical system regardless will perform differently. Pistols are no different. That is why it is common to find the same makes and models will actually have different points of aim: some shoot low and some don’t. I saw one of the comments about this pistol stating that. Well, mine shoots low as well. It really doesn’t bother me because I shoot allot of silhouettes. I have noticed at 25 meters the pistol does consistently strike low. So if I aim at the chest then I hit high in the stomach area. I don’t mind that and look it as just the way the pistol shoots. With a little adjustment with my point and I was hitting right where I wanted. There is older aiming technique that calls for placing the sights at the bottom of the target. Some have called this the “lolly-pop” technique. I have noticed allot of S&W pistols work well with this aiming technique. This pistol isn’t perfect and has it’s issues which I have mentioned. However, I would rather have it than a Glock and I have shot Glocks for years. I like the stainless steel magazines on this pistol rather than the plastic coated magazines on the Glock: I think the S&W mags load easier despite the slight rattle at times. However, I have experienced allot of Glocks malfunctioning, while I have never seen this pistol do that. Lastly, this pistol isn’t perfect but it is a good pistol for the price. more

    Great value...But..
I bought the S&W SD 40 a week ago. My first .40 cal. I put about 150 rounds through it with no problems. Here's the but part. The 2 mags that came with the gun rattle like crazy when fully loaded. Very annoying.... I've researched this and it's apparent others are having the same issue. Any remedy out there? All in all I am very happy with the gun. more

Smooth and accurate, joy to shoot
Only 50 rounds in but I thoroughly enjoyed my first range trip with this gun. I hadn’t shot anything in about 5 years and had YouTube-induced concerns about this gun having a significant upward recoil effect but I ...didn’t notice at all. four stars instead of five only because the stock sights, high viz, aren’t for me. Perhaps because I’m RG color blind, at my ideal aiming distance, the rear red dots don’t stand out. Still was able to maintain about a four inch grouping once I stopped jerking the trigger. more

    Great gun for the price
My wife bought this gun as a gift for me about 3 years ago. Only problems were getting used to the sights and the fairly heavy trigger pull. I installed a Hi-Viz front sight, Apex trigger spring kit, stainless steel reco...il spring rod and a Hogue rubber slip on grip. For $300 + tax ($21) and $100 worth of modifications it has become the best hammerless pistol I've ever owned. I'd put it up against the high dollar semi-autos any day. Buy this pistol and spring for the modifications and you'll have a great pistol that you'll love! Oh, and did I mention that I have never had a jam of any kind with this gun. Very reliable! more

    Perfect Truck Gun
I bought this gun because of its excellent value and perfect function. Shot a friends SD9VE at the range and instantly went and picked up this version of the SD40. It is not the most expensive gun, which makes it perfect... carry gun for your vehicle while out working in the field or running errands in town. Hopefully it won't get stolen, but unfortunately it happens in the world, if it did, you didn't lose a $700-$800 or more gun. Same thing If you ever were forced to use it, you wouldn't lose as much when the police have to confiscate it. The gun shoots great and accurate, easy cleaning and maintenance. Trigger is what it is...I put plenty of rounds through mine with the stock trigger and it was OK, but I did recently install the APEX trigger kit for it, huge difference, would highly suggest but not necessary. Very nice gun! more

    good gun for the price
Not a bad firearm. Glock like, fires every time, works well with a light or laser and acceptable accuracy. Makes a good nightstand or car pistol if you don't want to risk loss or theft of your higher end gun. Found ...the grip to be good enough, you can always add an aftermarket pachmayr. The trigger got uncomfortable after a few mags. 14 +1 of .40 capacity, however it does have the magazine rattle sound, . Overall a descent buy for $300.00 more

    Superb pistol for the money
Love the gun, but 2 shoulder surgeries a 4 fused vertebra in the neck make shooting a lot (200) of rounds is painful for a few days. My issues, not the gun. Also, after hearing about the trigger pull, I put in all of the... Galloway Precision upgrades (under $70) and got the trigger down to 5 lbs or less. Also upgraded to the 21 pound stainless steel recoil spring and it really gives it pretty good rapid rate of fire (18 pound is the standard). My updates overpriced the gun, but I have no plans on selling it so I upgraded as I saw fit. Pros - Fits in my small hands nicely. Not too heavy fully loaded - Wife loves it over my 9mm carry so this is her "home defense" gun, which makes ME very happy (vs her .22). Fits in her hands as well. - 14 ROUNDS! Make me feel better that the wife will hit the B/G somewhere or scare the crud out of him and make him run! - Great price when it's on sale - Solid built. don't let the "plastic" comments fool you, I have no issues at all with this pistol for the price. - Fires ALL ammo I've thrown at it so far. No fail to fire, fail to eject, or stove pipes at all. Cons - Trigger pull was an issue. The upgrade kit corrected all of that (need some basic tools and I had never been this deep into an auto before and I had no issues dropping the kit in) - Take down bar is too small. You can not get a good grip on it. Also fixed with the Galloway kit. Easy as silk now to remove the slide. - No adjustable sights (original shot low and right - bottom/left corner of the bulls eye). Added Fiber Optic sights, a slight wind-age tap and and it's bang on bulls eye at 7 yards. - NO SAFETY. Probably not an issue for most folks, but my carry has a safety and after several practice draws, it's automatic to slide the safety off. - Not a lot of after market add on's (other than the Galloway). Most are for the SW40VE, not the SD40VE. Some will work, others won't (ArmaLaser TR15 will NOT fit this gun). more

    Dependable Pistol
Do not let the price of this firearm fool you, it is a solid built, accurate pistol. I've owned mine since September of 2016 and have had no complaints yet. It digests any ammo you throw in it and is a breeze to bre...ak down. The only sore spot would probably be the trigger. The hinged double action only trigger is kind of sloppy and creaky, but with a little more patience I have no problem grouping rounds center mass and for the price one quirk is nothing to complain about. I carry this girl everywhere I can. There may be better options but for 300.00 I'm not worried about banging her around and scuffing up the frame a bit. more

After 600 rounds the weapon is operating very smoothly. With experience of using a handgun you will learn to control "Trigger Jerk" that Mr. NonTexan elaborates to. After 750 rounds at the range, I upgraded the... trigger spring, very little difference. When & IF you use a tool for protection, law enforcement officers will confiscate the weapon. Therefore, I won't invest big bucks into a carry weapon, or a nightstand gun. I like this, and a streamlight mounts nicely. more

    Fantastic pistol, even better price!
This is my first .40 and I have to say I was a bit skeptical about this model, especially after reading all the negative reviews about the Sigma series, which was (I think) the previous generation (pretty much a glock mo...ck). After putting 200+ rounds through this gun in one sitting, all of my skepticism went away. I used several different types of ammo and not once did a malfunction occur. Pros: You simply cannot be the reliability and price point of this gun. Cons: None. I will most likely be upgrading the sights, but that's because i'm the kind of person that can't leave anything stock. The stock high viz sights are exceptional. Academy experience purchasing this pistol: Exceptional. The young man that helped me out knew way more then I expected, even when I tried to stump him. Immediately after I purchased this pistol, I went to the range and shot with a friend. Directly from the gun range, we went back to Academy and he bought a 9mm. The service is pleasant and everyone appeared to know what they were talking about. more

Good Gun, not great but worth the price
Put about 100 rounds through it so far but not a single issue so far mechanically. The trigger is longer than I prefer but over all at this price point its not really an issue. Im satisfied for what it is.

    Worth every penny
Got on sale yesterday for 299, bought 100 pack of Remington 180 FMJ for 38 bucks, and a Fobus pancake holster for 26 bucks, 390 all together! Shot 50 rounds that afternoon, no problems, and the trigger pull is smooth and... not as bad as reviewed. Accuracy is excellent! 1.7 at 25 yards, 2.5 at 50. Carries very light, has great balance when aiming and has manageable recoil. Plan on replacing the plastic guide rod and adding Truglo sights, other than that it's a great gun. more

Solid gun with Very long stiff trigger pull
I have had this gun for about 2 years now and it is a solid good quality gun, but the trigger pull, +- 10 lbs is very heavy. I have had a trigger kit installed, $24, that made a huge difference. The trigger is now at abo...ut 6 lbs and quite reasonable. Great gun once modified. If it came out of the box that way I would give it 4 stars. Just make sure you know what your are getting into. more

    Long, heavy trigger pull
Maybe OK for Self Defense, hope to never find out. As far as taking it to the range... long and heavy trigger pull, hard to be accurate without plenty of practice. If you're looking for a plinker, I'd look for ...something with a better trigger. Again, maybe ok if you're up close and personal with an assailant, but otherwise, I'd call it a paperweight. more

    Great entry level gun
Have owned the SD-9 for about three months. Have fired about 500 rounds without any problems. Yes the trigger is heavy but you need to remember that this is not a target gun. I did install the Apex spring kit and it did ...drop the pull weight about two pounds to around 5.5 Shoots almost as good as my M&P. Would be a good home self protection firearm. more

Long and heavy trigger pull. Hard to be accurate
Hopefully I'll never know how good this is as a self defense tool, but as a plinker to take to the range it's pretty useless. Long and heavy trigger pull takes you off target pretty quickly. While it's a g...ood looking gun, the double stack magazine is noisy when loaded and moving. I'd recommend getting something else. more

Great Gun & Really Long Trigger Pull
I purchased this gun at the Academy Store on I10 in Katy, TX. It's a great value gun and very well made. My only issue with this gun as it has a super heavy trigger pull. It would be nice if S&W lightened the pu...ll and just added a safety to it. That would make this an extremely ideal gun. I have several other firearms (way too many to list), but I do know my way around guns and ammo. I didn't have any misfires and have already shot about 400 rounds in it. I love the Stainless Steel composition for the barrel and slide and am overall impressed with the durability of the gun. However, the long trigger pull makes its accuracy a little difficult to manage. Someone on another post said they were "shooting down and to the left", well that is because of the trigger pull. I had the same issue. Overall, it's a very good gun, but not as good as a "Glock 24" in my opinion. If S&W would correct this, this would be a stellar and affordable handgun. more

    Easy to upgrade or modify
I bought this S&W .40 a few months ago. It has been a reliable shooter and the stability and low recoil which makes it easy to bring back to the target every time. I also really like the large magazine capacity which... obviously allows for more shots before needing to change magazines. The only reason I gave this gun 4 stars was because of the factory 9 lbs trigger pull. This can easily be upgraded though. more

I expected better quality from Smith & Wesson..
Bought this in Febuary, shot 130 rounds at the indoor range. Aiming at chest center on a body target the shots landed in groin area at 7 yards. That is way to low! Never had a feeding problem, jam or misfire using Winche...ster FMJ 165 grain ammo or 180 grain Blazer brass. I have not tried steel or aluminum casings but don't foresee a problem feeding. The barrel and slide move left to right on the polymer frame way too much. The only safety is the trigger and the trigger pull is extremely long. Fits in the hand well and is rather smooth in and out of my holster. Recoil wasn't bad with 165 grain ammo. more

Solid pistol for a great price!
I have owned this pistol for a little over a month and have put 200 rounds through it with not one malfunction. The ergonomics are great as with any S&W polymer frame pistol. I did upgrade to a steel guide rod with a... 20lb recoil spring and it lightened up the recoil just a bit. My only issue with this pistol is that the magazine has a rattle when loaded to capacity but if you load 13 instead of 14 rounds the rattle goes away!! Not too much of an issue since this is my nightstand gun and not a CCW. Overall this is a great gun for not a lot of money!!! more

    Trust it with my life
I purchased my SD40VE back in Spring of 2013. When I first took it out to the range I only had 3 failure to feed issues with 100 rounds fired which I was not concerned with as I knew it was part of the break in process. ...Since I have owned the SD40VE I have put over 1500 rounds through the pistol. I have never thoroughly cleaned the pistol. I have only taken apart the slide and barrel and cleaned those portions. I have never had any issues with the pistol since the break in period.*This pistol is as slim as you can get in a double stack .40 cal. *This pistol makes for an excellent carry gun - it is my Everyday Carry pistol for conceal carry*The take down is easy and simple*The first pull on the trigger is long and heavy as it is designed to be ON PURPOSE. Its called a SDT (Self Defense Trigger). Practice with the pistol makes this aspect of the gun easy to get use too.*The handle is well designed with plenty of traction for the hands.*Comes with 2 magazinesThis is pistol is great because of all it has to offer for such a good price. No it is not a Sig Sauer P226 (so dont try to compare it to other higher priced pistols instead look at what it has to offer) but the SD40VE is well worth every penny spent and it will last.Bottom Line: Great to handle and I TRUST IT WITH MY LIFE. more

    Great .40 for the price
I and my son in law each bought one last (Black Friday) evening. The following day we went to an indoor range and put +100 rounds thru without any jams or stoppages. My son in law, never firing an semi-auto shot well. I ...shot consistently due to the long trigger pull. This was confirmed by swapping pistols with each other. Just want to say I am very happy with this firearm over all. Everything about it is perfect for me. Very simple to operate and does what its supposed to do. Easy to handle!
I loved this pistol even before I bought it. I was getting ready of buying my first firearm so I did much research. I liked what was said of this pistol. While in El Paso, I went shooting with my friends and brother to t...he dessert. A friend of mine had bought the SD9VE. I did notice that his pistol did have some issues. After more research I bough SD40VE. I took it shooting and I loved it, I'm still a beginner at this so I didn't do a good job at aiming. Two things I want to say, I really did not notice much of a difference in the recoil between the SD40VE and the SD9VE. I make this point because one thing I was told was that I should get a SD9VE so that my wife could use it to if she has to. My wife was able to use the SD9VE easily and this one should not be any problem for her. Second, this pistol is really easy to handle. It's really easy to disassemble, to load, to clean and I love the fact that the trigger has to be pulled all the way. more

    More for the money
This was my first gun I ever bought, for the price thought was going to be one of those guns you shot few rounds and then it was going to be good for nothing. For my surprise the pistol is wow,no words I'd fire over... 500 rounds and no a single malfunction so far. No complaints S&W did a great job on this one, highly recommend it to anyone who wants something that you can depend on but at the same time as cheap as you can find for a gun. Not to mention academy has competitive prices more

I purchased about 2 months ago and I have shot over two hundred rounds with different brands of ammo and it never jammed. I own revolvers and had to get used to shooting a semi. Once I got used to it,the shots group real...ly well and it can be carried concealed. I do recommend this handgun, you will not be disappointed. more

No tools to breakdown and clean and also reliable.
I bought this gun a year ago and right off the box it felt good in my hand. Squeezing the trigger it had a long travel and some resistance before it fired. That is a good safety feature that keeps you from accidentally f...iring a round. Cleaned it and oiled before use and had no problems with it. Qualified for conceal carry with it and is my favorite hand gun for target practice. This is the perfect hand gun to own, why? It is like having a Glock at 1/3 the price. You can not go wrong buddy. more

    SD40VE
This is my first handgun. I decided not to spend almost $600 on a Glock .40 S&W firearm so I went with this could not beat the price, and people seem to complain about the trigger pull. I found no issues with it. Sin...ce it was only $299 it came with no hard case so I also purchased a plano case from academy for 6.99. overall great gun for the price and for the casual shooter more

Fires functions and accuracy just as well as higher priced pistols out there plus you get on extra magazine. I have fire over 400 rounds of different brands of ammo, from Tula to Speer gold dots, no FTF FTE, grouping 3&q...uot; at 25 yards easy, tigger harder than some but easy to get used to, install tigger kit from Apex tactical makes it much better. solid shooter
I bought this gun in April of 14. Price was right and I wanted a 40 cal. I already had the sw9ve which is a very reliable gun. Needless to say I was very disappointed when I took it to the range and couldn't shoot i...t more than twice before it would not extract the casing. I took it back to Academy and they sent it in to be repaired. Smith had it for 8 weeks before I got it back. Fast forward about a month and I finally got back to the range. Guess what? That's right it still wouldn't extract the casing after being fired only once or twice at most. Back to academy a second time to have the gun sent in. This time I made sure the magazines were sent in with the gun, they wern't the first time. Got the gun back in only 3 weeks this time. Took it back to the range and it fires flawlessly. Smith included 2 new magazines with the gun. I'm very pleased with the gun now and Smith and Wesson. Really good warranty dept. My advice, make sure the magazines are sent with the gun if it should ever need to be returned for warranty service. This is a 5 star gun but do to warranty issues at first I can only give it 3 stars. more

    Great Buy!
In terms of look, feel, versatility, accuracy, and performance, you couldn't ask for a better gun. THE ONLY PROBLEM? The trigger. Wow! More than 8 lbs pull, and the return on the trigger takes you from one zip code ...to another. BUT THERE IS AN INEXPENSIVE AND SIMPLE FIX. Apex makes an SD Spring kit for $20. Great video with installation instructions, and once installed, problem solved. For only $20 more this gun remains at the top of the class of inexpensive but outstanding hand guns. more

    good gun for the price
I bought this gun about a month ago and just got the opportunity to fire it today. The recoil on this gun was a little on the tuff side compared to a glock 22 gen III BUT not too bad. The trigger pull definitely has some... getting used too though. I didn't really care for that aspect of it ...especially compared to my Taurus 609 but it works cosidering this one has no safety. Its fairly accurate but the trigger pull I think takes some of that away. Overall though its a gretly priced gun. I fired an assortment of ammo including 100 steel cased blazers, 40 Winchester law man's hollow points 50 remington umc, and a mag of Remington jhp without a hicup. So for that reason I would trust this firearm with my life. Others would argue that but it just plain works. With some practice I could be hitting my marks a lot easier. All and all I'd recommend this firearm to someone that wants a cheap reliable gun. more

I LOVE this gun, it hasn't failed me yet. I was even chatting with a Sheriff one day whop was also a proud owner of this gun, and he told me he would prefer this over his Glock.40 any day. THIS GUN IS A BUY! a few ez mods and walla!
Bought the stock S&W SD40VE, Shot it and immediately noticed HEAVY!! Trigger pull. So I installed the Apex Tactical trigger spring kit, minus the trigger return spring, too light for me, then I went with a Galloway P...recision stainless steel guide rod with the 20 Lb. Spring ( comes stock with a very cheap plastic 17 Lb. guide rod that I would not trust.) P.S. Same 17 Lb. cheap plastic spring guide on the S&W SD9VE. now flawless! no ftf, fte. with a much improved trigger. Another issue is load the magazine one round less, no biggie. I bought this gun about 1 1/2 years ago. the trigger gave a hard time until I took two of the springs out and it dropped it from 12 to 3.5 pound trigger pull. Very nice gun for the price
I got mine a couple of months ago. I've put 300 rounds through it and it shoots great. I did have one FTF but that was with the full 15 in the gun and the really cheap ammo. Other than that, it never missed a lick. ...The trigger is sloppy and heavy though. I dropped an Apex trigger and spring kit in it. It took out all the creep and dropped the pull to 5.5 lbs. So for $280.00 for the gun and $60.00 for the trigger kit, this is now an excellent gun. more

    GREAT DEAL !!!
I bought my SD40VE about 6 months ago on sale for $289.00 GREAT DEAL !!! The trigger takes a little getting use to but once you have it, it's a tack driver !!! I have over 1500 rounds through her so far, and I must ...say She eats whatever I feed her, and has put them all down range with almost boring regularity. NOT ONE FTF, FTE or FTRTB in 1500 ROUNDS !!! It is also hands down the easiest automatic pistol I have ever seen to break down and clean. I also like the frame mounted rail where I just hung a new green laser which I also bought at Academy. The .40 S&W is a "high pressure" round and the SD jumps a bit, so if you are recoil sensitive you might want to consider her twin sister the SD9VE in 9MM The SD40VE IS A GREAT GUN AT A GREAT PRICE !!! more

Beware if you are a reloader
I bought this a while back, If you are a re-loader do not buy this gun, the casings after they are fired have a bulge and a crease in the casing which makes them questionable for reloading, if you look in the barrel ther...e is an indention where the the cartridge is inserted, that indention leaves a bulge after firing. I called Smith and Wesson they said "unfortunately" thats how they were made, Its sounded like it was flaw and they sold the gun any way and thats why it is cheap, I said I wanted a refund or a different gun and the guy told me management told him tell people thats just the way they were made and they will do nothing about it! I asked him if he had any more complaints and he said yes many from re-loaders. if you are not a re loader then this gun is good it  fires well, and is great for the price. This not academy's fault, but Smith and Wesson should say in their advertisement that this gun is not for the re-loader, they are deceptive so they can sell this gun.  I think it has been discontinued. I will avoid buying Smith and Wesson because of their Bait and Hook Tactics. more

Great value But some issues with the new 40
I bought the gun a few day ago and due to the snow storm in the south east I have a day off so I went out on the range I built on my property and shot the new pistol. I was not to happy I only shot 2 mags as I was having... every other round a FTF issue as the slide just push back far enough to allow the next round to load. I plan on contacting S&W on the issue and see what they can do to help. All in all I like the gun and feel sure the issue will get resolved. I have a 9 mm in the same gun and have had NO issues at all with it. SO BUY THIS GUN it is a great back up gun if you carry and a good home defense gun. more

    Great Gun for the money!
I purchased the gun about a year ago and have shot about 700 rounds with it and have not had a single FTF or FTE. I reload my own ammunition and I have no problems with it. With the .40 Glocks you get a bulge in the cart...ridges and it could be dangerous to use the spent cartridges for reloads. Not with the SD40VE which is definitely a plus if you plan to reload. The gun is accurate at 25 yards and is very ergonomic. The Sigma was copied from Glock and IMO you are getting a good gun for $200 - $250 less then the Glock. I added Apex trigger springs which reduced the trigger pull to around 5.5 lbs and the trigger is much smoother now. I also removed the plastic rear sight and replaced it with an M&P metal sight and that improved the rear sights. The gun is a real bargain and I highly recommend it! more

    Excellent Gun
I loved this gun, it is my favorite concealed carry gun, it function flawlessly and feed reliably the frame and barrel is all stainless steel no need to worry about rust or wearing, the thing the slide ride on is also st...ainless steel no worry about shaving, the take down is easy same as a glock, since it's a glock copy how bad can it be right since Glock did sued them i guess it must be very close, did the same dirt test ppl do for glock, work just as good and for 200$ less than a glock its a bargain, the sight are dead on and no pignosing like the glock usually does. Now the only thing i don't like about this gun is the magazine, once you loaded up the magazine it rattle.....Alot! i had people asking me what that rattling in ur pocket, but i think u can find a fix for that somewhere on youtube.  more

More accurate than I expected, and with the Apex spring kit, it's fu...n and what I carry concealed. It's not expensive, but I'd bet my life on it. Waiting for the SD9 to go on sale, I'll get one of them too! My motto, look elsewhere, shop Academy Sports. more

    Updated review
I said I would repost a review after I initially broke the gun in. I have now shot 1250 rounds within the first month. WOW, I LOVE THIS PISTOL! The trigger feels great now. It has really polished up nicely. I STILL have ...not had a single FTF, FTE, stovepipe, nothing! You heard me right, ZERO! This is by far the best $350 out the door I have ever spent. Hats off to Smith & Wesson. The gun is fairly light for it's size, and I can still conceal it, if I need to. Recoil is extremely manageable for a .40 cal. The accuracy is dead on. Very simple to field strip. I trust my life completely with this firearm. I would buy this any day over a Glock. If I had the money for a Glock, I would buy the Smith and Wesson M&P, but never the less, this is a quality piece. I seriously can't say anything bad about the SD40VE. Absolutely LOVE IT! more

    I love this gun.
i bought this and upgraded the guide rod from galloway. ran about 100 rounds through it this week first time shooting it and i love it. best gun you can get for the price. Getting my wife the 9mm this month. She shot it ...with ease and it was her first time shooting a hand gun.  Feels the same as a block to me. Great gun. more

Don't let the price fool you
I purchased this pistol about 2 weeks ago.  At the time I thought this was a steal.  Then I started looking online and reading the mixed reviews about this pistol.  I was a bit reserved about it but after ...I went to the range, I was very pleased.  This pistol performed flawlessly!  It wasn't picky on ammo, I shot Remington & Winchester through it.  Zero FTE or FTF with right at 100 rounds through it.  There is one thing that I do not like about the pistol.  There is no elevation adjustment on the rear sight.  But at this price, you can't have all the bells and whistles.   Bottom line, this is a great pistol for a great price more

    My first hand gun
Bought this gun a few days ago. I LOVE THIS GUN! I took it range the day after I bought it and had a few miss fires but that was due to me not pulling the slide briskly enough. I do not recommend going to Academy to buy ...guns until they have counted there inventory. I had to wait almost 2 hours after working the night before. more

    Best .40 for the money!
Bought this pistol yesterday, and got to the range today. I ran 200 rounds through it without any FTF, FTE, FTF, or stovepipes. I can't say that about the Glock I tried. Very similar to the Glock, but in my opinion ...more reliable. The grip fits my hand better because it doesn't have the finger grooves. Don't get me wrong, it is not as nice as my brothers M&P .40 cal, but it is also a couple hundred dollars cheaper. No complaints so far. It is very accurate, and the recoil is very manageable. One could nitpick the gritty trigger, but mine smoothed out after 200 rounds, and I expect it to get only better in time. Remember, it's only $320! I will repost an update once I fire over 1000 rounds, but so far I am more than happy with this purchase! I would definantly recommend this gun over many firearms for a lot more money. *Cough Cough* Glock! more

    Great Value Gun
We bought one of these several months ago, and have put more than 500 rounds through it.  The mechanics and logistics of the gun are great.  The trigger is pretty stiff and has a hard reset, which some people m...ay not like but which we found either loosened up a bit or we got used to it after a while.  For a home defense gun with no external safety, the trigger is appropriate.  Also, you may want to load the chamber by releasing the slide lock as we found that you have to pull and release the slide pretty hard and quick or it can jam sometimes.  The gun breaks down for cleaning near identical to a glock, which is what you'd expect since it is basically copied from that design. more

    SD40VE Pistol
I bought this pistol at Academy in May and fired about 500 rounds thru it and all ammo except for winchester white box 165 grain bullets have a budge on each fired casing. Talked to Smith & Wesson and they will tell ...you that the gun was gun barrel was notched out to allow for all 40 ca ammo to load, therefore most of the fired casing can not be reloaded. They tell you pistol is in specs and if you RMA it back to them, they will hold it for a week or so and send it back to you. They will not fix or replace the barrel. They tell you it is okay to fire and they have no intentions or replacing any barrel on a SD40VE, therefore I do not recommend that anyone purchase this pistol. more

Something you can rely on: Always ready to go.
This gun was my first and best gun I ever had. I bought it to get my conceal carry license and I just can not get over as to how reliable and accurate it has been. I will never get rid of it. Shooting accuracy and reliab...ility is something you can rely on. And it just feels really good when I place my hand around the handle. It fits like a glove. more

    Worth every $
Just bought from Academy 3 days ago. Went looking to compare Glock 27 and Sig P250. I'm ex LEO so I like the .40. I've always been a S&W guy but thought I'd venture away for something new..........unti...l I held the Sigma. Felt great and much lighter than duty weapon. Immediately went to range with 15 year old son to shoot. Put a couple hundred rounds through it with no problems. He loved it and he has issues with my duty weapon's trigger pull. No issues here!! Worth the money!! more

    Wifes PeePee dance! Wow!
Just purchased the S&W Sigma .40 with 3 boxes of the Monarch S&W JHP .40 180-Grain Centerfire Ammunition 2 hours ago. Gave it at quick wipe down with oil and fired 100 rounds through it, WOW!. Excellent firearm, ...I'm a 20 plus year Military Veteran, and have fired the .45 to the current .9mm, This weapon, in my opinion, out performs what I currently carry as a DoD employe. I have read complaints about the trigger pull, WHAT TRIGGER PULL! It is light and smooth. Let my 110 lb wife shoot her first gun with this, couldn't get her to stop the peepee dance! All she wanted to do is keep firing. Now I have to get her the Smith & Wesson SD9VE Sigma 9mm. Love this weapon. more

    You won't regret it!
I purchased this gun at Academy due to price. It was my first automatic. I have fired at least 700 - 1000 rounds through it. Not one single issue. No matter what low grade target ammo I used. And certainly no issues with... high grade ammo. I'm as accurate with this as I am my $700+ 9mm. Since I originally purchased this I've purchased 3 other autos. One was $450+, One $500+ and one $700+. I've had some sort of issue with each at the range. One won't feed a certain grain ammo, one has been sent back to the manufacturer for repairs, the last one requires lock-tite on the grip screws to keep them from backing out. Not hiccup number one from this baby. Just ready to go everyday, no hassle. If you don't like the trigger pull see a gunsmith. But don't pass up this affordable, reliable and accurate firearm! more

    Excellent Gun
First firearm for me so I'm not able to review as good as others. This is a great gun for someone on a buget. I purchased mine in Concord, NC. At the time of purchase, Academy had this priced the cheapest I'd f...ound it. Has a nice feel to it. Even loaded it doesn't feel too heavy at all. Doesn't seem to have too much recoil either. Holds 14+1. Comes with two magazines. Only disappointment for me is that it comes in a box with no kind of case. But overall I am extremely pleased with it. more
