    Great pistol for the money.
Love this pistol. It's Smith & Wessons copy of a Glock. It's just as accurate and reliable as my Glocks and it's around $200 to $350 dollars cheaper than most Glocks. I really like the way S&W cont...oured the sides of the slides. Have not had any malfunctions of any kind. The trigger isn't the best but you can get use to it. Well worth the money. more

    1500 rounds so far
I have had this sd40ve for about 6 months now. It is not picky on ammo. When I first bought the gun I cleaned and oiled it up. Ran 200 rounds through it. Had 2 ftf on the 2nd mag. Due to the gun not being broke in yet. I... have fired all kinda of hollow points. Just about all fmj rounds. I haven't tried to fire steel case rounds but I dont want to. I just keep it clean and oiled. About every 200 rounds I clean it. The sights are dead on, even at 50 yards. Great shooting and easy to do follow up shots. 40 s&w is not a high recoil round as you might think. I have let people that are 145 lbs shoot this gun and thay are just fine with it. Have not done one single thing to it so far. I might try and put a trigger kit in it soon but the trigger is not horrible for me. Will post back when I hit the 3000 round mark and 5000 mark. more

    Worst trigger ever!
I'm shocked that S&W is still producing this garbage. It has the worst trigger action of any pistol I've ever shot. I even replaced the trigger with the Apex upgrade and then the Garrison upgrade and it sti...ll didn't help. Buy yourself a Taurus PT140 G2C for $100 less and never look back. Much better gun and a fantastic trigger, too more

Great Gun for the Price... Very low sighted.....
I bought this gun about 3 weeks ago, and took it out to the range. It's a great gun for the price and lot of fun to shoot. I fired 150 rounds out of it. No issues with how the gun itself handled. The ergonomics of t...his gun are great, I love the way it feels in my hand. (As someone who is right handed, but left eye dominant... it's great to have a gun that can be comfortably fired in either hand) This gun is very easy to take apart, clean and put back together. It's a handgun that is almost as easy to clean as a revolver. Regrettably the sights were set extremely low. When I fired at the 30 meter range, rounds were going into the ground instead of the target. When I fired at the 10 meter range, I still wasn't on the paper. I had two friends fire it to make sure it wasn't just me.... same thing. For the rest of the day, I just aimed high to compensate for the low sights. I checked the owner's manual, the sights are only adjustable left & right, not up & down. I'm contacting Smith & Wesson in hopes that my gun just had a fluke defect and they fix it. If not, I may file down the front sight or buy after market sights. This stopped me from giving the gun 5 stars, but still not a hard thing to fix. Lastly, if you're in a state where this gun comes with 14 round magazines, buy a speed loader. It's nearly impossible load these mags to full capacity with your bare hands. more

    Really Like the SD40 VE
bought this on sale black friday 2017, saved a few bucks doing so, very basic pistol, and does have some flaws, but it's like thinking you are getting a Cadillac for the price point of a Yugo. the m&p shield is ...a bit better quality but i have seen many reviews commenting on the exact same issues, a gun fits the person not the other way around, i have put about 1000 rounds down range (50 rounds were the cheapest .40 i could find) with no ftf, fte, or mag eject issues. i was military so we took care of our weapons, proper lubrication and cleaning are crucial. the worst possible thing a person can do with a gun is buy one and go to yhe range, failure is immenent. Take it home, clean it, watch some videos about proper cleaning and lubrication, learn the weapon, know how it comes apart, then clean it again, lubricate, and then go to the range. Yes as others have said it shoots low, lollipop method works great. now to the flaws, 3 that are cheaply fixed. 1. I disliked the trigger, apex makes a replacement for about 40 dollars, installed myself, much better, also got the spring kit from them as well. 2. the sights are painted on, if you are adventurous you can get fiber optic sticks for about 3 dollars and drill yours out.(unless you have the right equipment to do so I do not recommend) or for about 50 dollars the m&p sheild sights fit perfectly, or you can invest in trijicon sights, for alot more, I have not changed my sights. 3. is a personal thing, price, for about 50 dollars more you can get the m & p shield, with some of the upgrades I discussed, or for 200+/- dollars more you can get the performance center version m&p shield which I will be buying soon. it comes with the fiber optic sights, ported barrel, but still the same trigger. Why, I ciuld not tell you. the SD40ve is a good weapon, inexpensive, and will do it's job, but remember it's a Yugo not Cadillac. more

Very easy pistol to handle and carry
I bought my SD40VE about 3 months ago.I have fired many different types of firearms , from my Military time until now. I have fired over 1500 rounds through this pistol without one single misfire or failure to load. At 4...5 feet using 180gr ammo, this baby will cover a circle the size of 1/2 dollar. Fired it 18 rounds at 75 feet and landed 17 in the forehead of a silhouette. So go ahead and spend your money on higher priced guns. As for me I'll put this one up against any of them, especially for this price range. By the way, I have reloaded over 1000 spent casings fired from this gun, and they shoot as good as factory rounds. more

A good pistol for the price.
I have shot allot in my life. I come from a military back ground and have fired numerous pistols. I bought this pistol because of the S&W name, the price, and the barrel/slide are stainless. It does have one issue th...at doesn’t affect the function but it is a little annoying: the magazine has a slight rattle when loaded fully while inserted in the pistol. However, I have shot over 1,000 rounds through it without a jam, failure to feed, “stove-pipe” or any other issues. Again I have shot allot of pistols, makes and models alike. When I was in the Army we would shoot issued Berretta’s that were all the same. However, they didn’t shoot or behave the same. Every mechanical system regardless will perform differently. Pistols are no different. That is why it is common to find the same makes and models will actually have different points of aim: some shoot low and some don’t. I saw one of the comments about this pistol stating that. Well, mine shoots low as well. It really doesn’t bother me because I shoot allot of silhouettes. I have noticed at 25 meters the pistol does consistently strike low. So if I aim at the chest then I hit high in the stomach area. I don’t mind that and look it as just the way the pistol shoots. With a little adjustment with my point and I was hitting right where I wanted. There is older aiming technique that calls for placing the sights at the bottom of the target. Some have called this the “lolly-pop” technique. I have noticed allot of S&W pistols work well with this aiming technique. This pistol isn’t perfect and has it’s issues which I have mentioned. However, I would rather have it than a Glock and I have shot Glocks for years. I like the stainless steel magazines on this pistol rather than the plastic coated magazines on the Glock: I think the S&W mags load easier despite the slight rattle at times. However, I have experienced allot of Glocks malfunctioning, while I have never seen this pistol do that. Lastly, this pistol isn’t perfect but it is a good pistol for the price. more

    Great gun for the price
My wife bought this gun as a gift for me about 3 years ago. Only problems were getting used to the sights and the fairly heavy trigger pull. I installed a Hi-Viz front sight, Apex trigger spring kit, stainless steel reco...il spring rod and a Hogue rubber slip on grip. For $300 + tax ($21) and $100 worth of modifications it has become the best hammerless pistol I've ever owned. I'd put it up against the high dollar semi-autos any day. Buy this pistol and spring for the modifications and you'll have a great pistol that you'll love! Oh, and did I mention that I have never had a jam of any kind with this gun. Very reliable! more

    Made extremely well!
I've had this gun a couple of months and have put probably a thousand rounds or more through it without any issues. Yeah, the trigger is a little heavy, but you get used to that. It is very easy to take apart and cl...ean and then put back together. It is a full size pistol and a little harder to conceal, but overall a great gun. more

    good gun for the price
Not a bad firearm. Glock like, fires every time, works well with a light or laser and acceptable accuracy. Makes a good nightstand or car pistol if you don't want to risk loss or theft of your higher end gun. Found ...the grip to be good enough, you can always add an aftermarket pachmayr. The trigger got uncomfortable after a few mags. 14 +1 of .40 capacity, however it does have the magazine rattle sound, . Overall a descent buy for $300.00 more

I bought this gun about 6 months ago and put about 1000 rounds through it. It works great and has no problems whatsoever unless you use aluminum rounds then it tends to jam so you have to use either steel or brass rounds... but other than that I couldn't be happier with this gun more

    Superb pistol for the money
Love the gun, but 2 shoulder surgeries a 4 fused vertebra in the neck make shooting a lot (200) of rounds is painful for a few days. My issues, not the gun. Also, after hearing about the trigger pull, I put in all of the... Galloway Precision upgrades (under $70) and got the trigger down to 5 lbs or less. Also upgraded to the 21 pound stainless steel recoil spring and it really gives it pretty good rapid rate of fire (18 pound is the standard). My updates overpriced the gun, but I have no plans on selling it so I upgraded as I saw fit. Pros - Fits in my small hands nicely. Not too heavy fully loaded - Wife loves it over my 9mm carry so this is her "home defense" gun, which makes ME very happy (vs her .22). Fits in her hands as well. - 14 ROUNDS! Make me feel better that the wife will hit the B/G somewhere or scare the crud out of him and make him run! - Great price when it's on sale - Solid built. don't let the "plastic" comments fool you, I have no issues at all with this pistol for the price. - Fires ALL ammo I've thrown at it so far. No fail to fire, fail to eject, or stove pipes at all. Cons - Trigger pull was an issue. The upgrade kit corrected all of that (need some basic tools and I had never been this deep into an auto before and I had no issues dropping the kit in) - Take down bar is too small. You can not get a good grip on it. Also fixed with the Galloway kit. Easy as silk now to remove the slide. - No adjustable sights (original shot low and right - bottom/left corner of the bulls eye). Added Fiber Optic sights, a slight wind-age tap and and it's bang on bulls eye at 7 yards. - NO SAFETY. Probably not an issue for most folks, but my carry has a safety and after several practice draws, it's automatic to slide the safety off. - Not a lot of after market add on's (other than the Galloway). Most are for the SW40VE, not the SD40VE. Some will work, others won't (ArmaLaser TR15 will NOT fit this gun). more

    Dependable Pistol
Do not let the price of this firearm fool you, it is a solid built, accurate pistol. I've owned mine since September of 2016 and have had no complaints yet. It digests any ammo you throw in it and is a breeze to bre...ak down. The only sore spot would probably be the trigger. The hinged double action only trigger is kind of sloppy and creaky, but with a little more patience I have no problem grouping rounds center mass and for the price one quirk is nothing to complain about. I carry this girl everywhere I can. There may be better options but for 300.00 I'm not worried about banging her around and scuffing up the frame a bit. more

Put about 100 rounds through it so far but not a single issue so far mechanically. The trigger is longer than I prefer but over all at this price point its not really an issue. Im satisfied for what it is.

    Worth every penny
Got on sale yesterday for 299, bought 100 pack of Remington 180 FMJ for 38 bucks, and a Fobus pancake holster for 26 bucks, 390 all together! Shot 50 rounds that afternoon, no problems, and the trigger pull is smooth and... not as bad as reviewed. Accuracy is excellent! 1.7 at 25 yards, 2.5 at 50. Carries very light, has great balance when aiming and has manageable recoil. Plan on replacing the plastic guide rod and adding Truglo sights, other than that it's a great gun. more

Solid gun with Very long stiff trigger pull
I have had this gun for about 2 years now and it is a solid good quality gun, but the trigger pull, +- 10 lbs is very heavy. I have had a trigger kit installed, $24, that made a huge difference. Long, heavy trigger pull
Maybe OK for Self Defense, hope to never find out. As far as taking it to the range... long and heavy trigger pull, hard to be accurate without plenty of practice. If you're looking for a plinker, I'd look for ...something with a better trigger. Again, maybe ok if you're up close and personal with an assailant, but otherwise, I'd call it a paperweight. more

Great Gun & Really Long Trigger Pull
I purchased this gun at the Academy Store on I10 in Katy, TX. It's a great value gun and very well made. My only issue with this gun as it has a super heavy trigger pull. It would be nice if S&W lightened the pu...ll and just added a safety to it. That would make this an extremely ideal gun. I have several other firearms (way too many to list), but I do know my way around guns and ammo. I didn't have any misfires and have already shot about 400 rounds in it. I love the Stainless Steel composition for the barrel and slide and am overall impressed with the durability of the gun. However, the long trigger pull makes its accuracy a little difficult to manage. Someone on another post said they were "shooting down and to the left", well that is because of the trigger pull. I had the same issue. Overall, it's a very good gun, but not as good as a "Glock 24" in my opinion. If S&W would correct this, this would be a stellar and affordable handgun. more

    Busting the myths
First off let me say I thought about getting this gun for months but all the hype I read about it's accuracy and mainly the trigger pull made me go in a different direction. I finally decided to buy it and put it to... the test. As for as accuracy goes I always believed guns is more accurate then us so it's for us to figure how to use it. This gun was on point for me and any further distance I think I would just pull out my rifle. As of all this talk about heavy trigger pull. It turns out it's not bad at all. It doesn't throw me off, make me shake,or anything else people might be saying. Some say i wish the grips could be changed or it had a safety grip like my xdm or glock have but you can't compare that. The gun is very well built and solid for the price. I should of bought it sooner. more

    Easy to upgrade or modify
I bought this S&W .40 a few months ago. It has been a reliable shooter and the stability and low recoil which makes it easy to bring back to the target every time. I also really like the large magazine capacity which... obviously allows for more shots before needing to change magazines. The only reason I gave this gun 4 stars was because of the factory 9 lbs trigger pull. This can easily be upgraded though. more

Great combination of reliability and performance. Aside from the heavy trigger pull which is certainly no surprise, the only issue I have ever experienced is having the trigger pin slowly work its way out when firing sev...eral rounds quickly in succession. more

I expected better quality from Smith & Wesson..
Bought this in Febuary, shot 130 rounds at the indoor range. Aiming at chest center on a body target the shots landed in groin area at 7 yards. That is way to low! Never had a feeding problem, jam or misfire using Winche...ster FMJ 165 grain ammo or 180 grain Blazer brass. I have not tried steel or aluminum casings but don't foresee a problem feeding. The barrel and slide move left to right on the polymer frame way too much. The only safety is the trigger and the trigger pull is extremely long. Fits in the hand well and is rather smooth in and out of my holster. Recoil wasn't bad with 165 grain ammo. more

Actually competing with my .40s M&P and Glock
Bought this gun and some very cheap ammo for the range. It worked excellent with 250 rounds no hiccups of any kind. Would use as ccw if it wasn't for the size though some people won't mind given the 14+1 magz. ...Only thing I disliked were the slide letters, very poorly engraved. more

Solid pistol for a great price!
I have owned this pistol for a little over a month and have put 200 rounds through it with not one malfunction. The ergonomics are great as with any S&W polymer frame pistol. I did upgrade to a steel guide rod with a... 20lb recoil spring and it lightened up the recoil just a bit. My only issue with this pistol is that the magazine has a rattle when loaded to capacity but if you load 13 instead of 14 rounds the rattle goes away!! Not too much of an issue since this is my nightstand gun and not a CCW. Overall this is a great gun for not a lot of money!!! more

    Fantastic Pistol
I purchased this pistol today after having the SD9VE for about a week and loving it. The SD40VE is it's big brother and it has not disappointed. Took it right to the range and put 50 180gr Blazer rounds through it a...long with 100 180gr Winchester rounds through it and about 10 180 gr Hornady American rounds through it no issues. Ate all the rounds. Easy disassembly, easy to clean. Average recoil for a .40. Thus far, I am really liking this pistol. more

lightest high capacity 40 cal pistol
Equal to the glock 23 but lighter and holds 1 more round. Shoots well; no jams with factory hollowpoints . Has front grip serrations to clear jams while glock 23 is smooth in the front. Easy to conceal carry with right h...olster. Costs $265 less than a G23; leaves money for a precise fit holster, laser mounts , extra magazines and ammo. Awesome. Better than my glock
I bought this gun about 1 year ago from academy. Black friday sale I couldn't pass up for the price. I put a green beam on it and it's awesome and accurate. Went shooting in a thunder storm (on purpose) with th...e S&w and my glock 26. Both have beams and no safety. S&w won that challenge. Neither jammed up, but the S&w was more accurate and smoother on the recoil during the storm. I felt I had a better (wet grip). Great .40 for the price
I and my son in law each bought one last (Black Friday) evening. The following day we went to an indoor range and put +100 rounds thru without any jams or stoppages. My son in law, never firing an semi-auto shot well. I ...shot consistently due to the long trigger pull. This was confirmed by swapping pistols with each other. A 6 inch drop at around 21 feet is acceptable for me at that range for home defense/ auto carry, I just hope it dos'nt ruin my shooting ability with my other pistols. more

Great feel and weight to this polymer hand gun. This was my first hand gun and I'm glad I chose it! I beat Dad in a shooting contest against his 1911 .45 caliber. Excellent value
I have purchased this model Smith and Wesson and the model before it both in .40 caliber. I love the newer model as a good all around pistol and have zero complaints-except of course the trigger. It's not too heavy ...but its noticeably heavier than say a flock, but with the money saved buying this gun I can always get a aftermarket trigger. Overall no jams no ftf but I haven't shot it ALOT. I would say yes of course I would suggest it as a good value and good pistol to anyone looking to not drop 600+ on one. Overall excellent value. more

    Excellent firearm!
Just want to say I am very happy with this firearm over all. Everything about it is perfect for me. Very simple to operate and does what its supposed to do. I have seen a lot of negative reviews concerning the trigger. I... for one have not found a single problem with the trigger. Being that the firearm does not have an external safety a heavier trigger is not a bad thing to have. The trigger is still not too heavy, it is just right. Easy to handle!
I loved this pistol even before I bought it. I was getting ready of buying my first firearm so I did much research. I liked what was said of this pistol. While in El Paso, I went shooting with my friends and brother to t...he dessert. A friend of mine had bought the SD9VE. I did notice that his pistol did have some issues. After more research I bough SD40VE. I took it shooting and I loved it, I'm still a beginner at this so I didn't do a good job at aiming. Two things I want to say, I really did not notice much of a difference in the recoil between the SD40VE and the SD9VE. I make this point because one thing I was told was that I should get a SD9VE so that my wife could use it to if she has to. My wife was able to use the SD9VE easily and this one should not be any problem for her. Second, this pistol is really easy to handle. It's really easy to disassemble, to load, to clean and I love the fact that the trigger has to be pulled all the way. more

    solid shooter
I bought this gun in April of 14. Price was right and I wanted a 40 cal. I already had the sw9ve which is a very reliable gun. Needless to say I was very disappointed when I took it to the range and couldn't shoot i...t more than twice before it would not extract the casing. I took it back to Academy and they sent it in to be repaired. Smith had it for 8 weeks before I got it back. Fast forward about a month and I finally got back to the range. Guess what? That's right it still wouldn't extract the casing after being fired only once or twice at most. Back to academy a second time to have the gun sent in. This time I made sure the magazines were sent in with the gun, they wern't the first time. Got the gun back in only 3 weeks this time. Took it back to the range and it fires flawlessly. Smith included 2 new magazines with the gun. I'm very pleased with the gun now and Smith and Wesson. Really good warranty dept. My advice, make sure the magazines are sent with the gun if it should ever need to be returned for warranty service. This is a 5 star gun but do to warranty issues at first I can only give it 3 stars. more

    Great Buy!
In terms of look, feel, versatility, accuracy, and performance, you couldn't ask for a better gun. THE ONLY PROBLEM? The trigger. Wow! More than 8 lbs pull, and the return on the trigger takes you from one zip code ...to another. BUT THERE IS AN INEXPENSIVE AND SIMPLE FIX. Apex makes an SD Spring kit for $20. Great video with installation instructions, and once installed, problem solved. For only $20 more this gun remains at the top of the class of inexpensive but outstanding hand guns. more

    good gun for the price
I bought this gun about a month ago and just got the opportunity to fire it today. The recoil on this gun was a little on the tuff side compared to a glock 22 gen III BUT not too bad. The trigger pull definitely has some... getting used too though. I didn't really care for that aspect of it ...especially compared to my Taurus 609 but it works cosidering this one has no safety. Its fairly accurate but the trigger pull I think takes some of that away. Overall though its a gretly priced gun. I fired an assortment of ammo including 100 steel cased blazers, 40 Winchester law man's hollow points 50 remington umc, and a mag of Remington jhp without a hicup. So for that reason I would trust this firearm with my life. Others would argue that but it just plain works. With some practice I could be hitting my marks a lot easier. All and all I'd recommend this firearm to someone that wants a cheap reliable gun. more

I LOVE this gun, it hasn't failed me yet. I was even chatting with a Sheriff one day whop was also a proud owner of this gun, and he told me he would prefer this over his Glock.40 any day. The ONLY complaint I have read about this gun is the trigger has a stiff spring, but I like mine being that way. HIGHLY recommend! more

    Great purchase for the price
Bought the SD40VE aover 2 months ago, at first I was a little concerned at the mixed reviews but for the price baught it anyway. I will never regret it, I have put over 450 rounds through it in a short period of time and... no mis-fires or feeds. Composite material was a conern, not tpo worry, 450 rounds and no wear, great gun and fo the price I don't worry when I am out and about on the quad, if I run it over I can afford to throw it away and get another one. more

    Great gun!
I received this as a Father's Day present from my 3 son's & wife. I had been looking at Glocks, but this gun is amazing. It fits my hand well, the recoil is light.. The only issue I didn't like was the... heavy trigger pull, but that was easily fixed with a trigger kit from Apex Tactical more

    Decent Gun
I have shot several hundred rounds through this gun. 2 rounds have stovepiped but it was cheap steel ammo. For the money you can't go wrong. the trigger is tight but it is SAFE .You really need to pull it kinda hard... but once you get used to it it's no big deal. I think it's one of the better looking guns out there looks much better to me than glock.Feels good in your hands. more

Reliable pistol that will not break the bank
Excellent gun for the money. Went through two hundred rounds in one day with not a single hiccup. It does have a long trigger pull (which many seem to complain about) but it also serves as a safety so it doesn't fir...e that easily. The two mags are a plus; I do, however, recommend purchasing a case for it. It does not come with one so you'll need it for storage or carrying it around -- for the price, it is expected. Buy it and take it to the range; you will not regret it. more

THIS GUN IS A BUY! a few ez mods and walla!
Bought the stock S&W SD40VE, Shot it and immediately noticed HEAVY!! Trigger pull. So I installed the Apex Tactical trigger spring kit, minus the trigger return spring, too light for me, then I went with a Galloway P...recision stainless steel guide rod with the 20 Lb. Spring ( comes stock with a very cheap plastic 17 Lb. guide rod that I would not trust.) P.S. Same 17 Lb. cheap plastic spring guide on the S&W SD9VE. now flawless! no ftf, fte. with a much improved trigger. Another issue is load the magazine one round less, no biggie. love the gun
I bought this gun about 1 1/2 years ago. the trigger gave a hard time until I took two of the springs out and it dropped it from 12 to 3.5 pound trigger pull. I lost count of how many rounds guessing 1000 +. I put threw ...it. but I can count on one hand the number of times its jammed on me. I shoot a lot from 7 to 25 feet I can put every round inside a 3 inch circle. and cant do that with my glock to this day more

Very nice gun for the price
I got mine a couple of months ago. I've put 300 rounds through it and it shoots great. I did have one FTF but that was with the full 15 in the gun and the really cheap ammo. Other than that, it never missed a lick. ...The trigger is sloppy and heavy though. I dropped an Apex trigger and spring kit in it. It took out all the creep and dropped the pull to 5.5 lbs. So for $280.00 for the gun and $60.00 for the trigger kit, this is now an excellent gun. more

I truthfully cannot find any flaws with this gun since it does everything I ask of it . A g...reat choice for a concealed weapon yet one that I am not afraid to trust my life to if the situation should ever arise . I have read the reviews about the trigger pull and my response is this . GREAT DEAL !!!
I bought my SD40VE about 6 months ago on sale for $289.00 GREAT DEAL !!! The trigger takes a little getting use to but once you have it, it's a tack driver !!! I have over 1500 rounds through her so far, and I must ...say She eats whatever I feed her, and has put them all down range with almost boring regularity. NOT ONE FTF, FTE or FTRTB in 1500 ROUNDS !!! It is also hands down the easiest automatic pistol I have ever seen to break down and clean. I also like the frame mounted rail where I just hung a new green laser which I also bought at Academy. The .40 S&W is a "high pressure" round and the SD jumps a bit, so if you are recoil sensitive you might want to consider her twin sister the SD9VE in 9MM The SD40VE IS A GREAT GUN AT A GREAT PRICE !!! more

Beware if you are a reloader
I bought this a while back, If you are a re-loader do not buy this gun, the casings after they are fired have a bulge and a crease in the casing which makes them questionable for reloading, if you look in the barrel ther...e is an indention where the the cartridge is inserted, that indention leaves a bulge after firing. I called Smith and Wesson they said "unfortunately" thats how they were made, Its sounded like it was flaw and they sold the gun any way and thats why it is cheap, I said I wanted a refund or a different gun and the guy told me management told him tell people thats just the way they were made and they will do nothing about it! I asked him if he had any more complaints and he said yes many from re-loaders. if you are not a re loader then this gun is good it  fires well, and is great for the price. This not academy's fault, but Smith and Wesson should say in their advertisement that this gun is not for the re-loader, they are deceptive so they can sell this gun.  I think it has been discontinued. I will avoid buying Smith and Wesson because of their Bait and Hook Tactics. more

Great value But some issues with the new 40
I bought the gun a few day ago and due to the snow storm in the south east I have a day off so I went out on the range I built on my property and shot the new pistol. I was not to happy I only shot 2 mags as I was having... every other round a FTF issue as the slide just push back far enough to allow the next round to load. I plan on contacting S&W on the issue and see what they can do to help. All in all I like the gun and feel sure the issue will get resolved. I have a 9 mm in the same gun and have had NO issues at all with it. SO BUY THIS GUN it is a great back up gun if you carry and a good home defense gun. more

    Great Gun for the money!
I purchased the gun about a year ago and have shot about 700 rounds with it and have not had a single FTF or FTE. I reload my own ammunition and I have no problems with it. With the .40 Glocks you get a bulge in the cart...ridges and it could be dangerous to use the spent cartridges for reloads. Not with the SD40VE which is definitely a plus if you plan to reload. The gun is accurate at 25 yards and is very ergonomic. The Sigma was copied from Glock and IMO you are getting a good gun for $200 - $250 less then the Glock. I added Apex trigger springs which reduced the trigger pull to around 5.5 lbs and the trigger is much smoother now. I also removed the plastic rear sight and replaced it with an M&P metal sight and that improved the rear sights. The gun is a real bargain and I highly recommend it! more

    Excellent Gun
I loved this gun, it is my favorite concealed carry gun, it function flawlessly and feed reliably the frame and barrel is all stainless steel no need to worry about rust or wearing, the thing the slide ride on is also st...ainless steel no worry about shaving, the take down is easy same as a glock, since it's a glock copy how bad can it be right since Glock did sued them i guess it must be very close, did the same dirt test ppl do for glock, work just as good and for 200$ less than a glock its a bargain, the sight are dead on and no pignosing like the glock usually does. Now the only thing i don't like about this gun is the magazine, once you loaded up the magazine it rattle.....Alot! i had people asking me what that rattling in ur pocket, but i think u can find a fix for that somewhere on youtube.  more

    Updated review
I said I would repost a review after I initially broke the gun in. I have now shot 1250 rounds within the first month. WOW, I LOVE THIS PISTOL! The trigger feels great now. It has really polished up nicely. I STILL have ...not had a single FTF, FTE, stovepipe, nothing! You heard me right, ZERO! This is by far the best $350 out the door I have ever spent. Hats off to Smith & Wesson. The gun is fairly light for it's size, and I can still conceal it, if I need to. Recoil is extremely manageable for a .40 cal. The accuracy is dead on. Very simple to field strip. I trust my life completely with this firearm. I would buy this any day over a Glock. If I had the money for a Glock, I would buy the Smith and Wesson M&P, but never the less, this is a quality piece. I seriously can't say anything bad about the SD40VE. Absolutely LOVE IT! more

Don't let the price fool you
I purchased this pistol about 2 weeks ago.  At the time I thought this was a steal.  Then I started looking online and reading the mixed reviews about this pistol.  I was a bit reserved about it but after ...I went to the range, I was very pleased.  This pistol performed flawlessly!  It wasn't picky on ammo, I shot Remington & Winchester through it.  Zero FTE or FTF with right at 100 rounds through it.  There is one thing that I do not like about the pistol.  There is no elevation adjustment on the rear sight.  But at this price, you can't have all the bells and whistles.   Bottom line, this is a great pistol for a great price more

    Best .40 for the money!
Bought this pistol yesterday, and got to the range today. I ran 200 rounds through it without any FTF, FTE, FTF, or stovepipes. I can't say that about the Glock I tried. Very similar to the Glock, but in my opinion ...more reliable. The grip fits my hand better because it doesn't have the finger grooves. Don't get me wrong, it is not as nice as my brothers M&P .40 cal, but it is also a couple hundred dollars cheaper. No complaints so far. It is very accurate, and the recoil is very manageable. One could nitpick the gritty trigger, but mine smoothed out after 200 rounds, and I expect it to get only better in time. Remember, it's only $320! I will repost an update once I fire over 1000 rounds, but so far I am more than happy with this purchase! I would definantly recommend this gun over many firearms for a lot more money. *Cough Cough* Glock! more

    Great Value Gun
We bought one of these several months ago, and have put more than 500 rounds through it.  The mechanics and logistics of the gun are great.  The trigger is pretty stiff and has a hard reset, which some people m...ay not like but which we found either loosened up a bit or we got used to it after a while.  For a home defense gun with no external safety, the trigger is appropriate.  Also, you may want to load the chamber by releasing the slide lock as we found that you have to pull and release the slide pretty hard and quick or it can jam sometimes.  The gun breaks down for cleaning near identical to a glock, which is what you'd expect since it is basically copied from that design. more

    SD40VE Pistol
I bought this pistol at Academy in May and fired about 500 rounds thru it and all ammo except for winchester white box 165 grain bullets have a budge on each fired casing. Talked to Smith & Wesson and they will tell ...you that the gun was gun barrel was notched out to allow for all 40 ca ammo to load, therefore most of the fired casing can not be reloaded. They tell you pistol is in specs and if you RMA it back to them, they will hold it for a week or so and send it back to you. They will not fix or replace the barrel. They tell you it is okay to fire and they have no intentions or replacing any barrel on a SD40VE, therefore I do not recommend that anyone purchase this pistol. more

Just bought from Academy 3 days ago. Went looking to compare Glock 27 and Sig P250. I'm ex LEO so I like the .40. I've always been a S&W guy but thought I'd venture away for something new..........unti...l I held the Sigma. Felt great and much lighter than duty weapon. Wifes PeePee dance! Wow!
Just purchased the S&W Sigma .40 with 3 boxes of the Monarch S&W JHP .40 180-Grain Centerfire Ammunition 2 hours ago. Gave it at quick wipe down with oil and fired 100 rounds through it, WOW!. Excellent firearm, ...I'm a 20 plus year Military Veteran, and have fired the .45 to the current .9mm, This weapon, in my opinion, out performs what I currently carry as a DoD employe. I have read complaints about the trigger pull, WHAT TRIGGER PULL! It is light and smooth. Let my 110 lb wife shoot her first gun with this, couldn't get her to stop the peepee dance! You won't regret it!
I purchased this gun at Academy due to price. It was my first automatic. I have fired at least 700 - 1000 rounds through it. Not one single issue. No matter what low grade target ammo I used. And certainly no issues with... high grade ammo. I'm as accurate with this as I am my $700+ 9mm. Since I originally purchased this I've purchased 3 other autos. One was $450+, One $500+ and one $700+. I've had some sort of issue with each at the range. One won't feed a certain grain ammo, one has been sent back to the manufacturer for repairs, the last one requires lock-tite on the grip screws to keep them from backing out. Not hiccup number one from this baby. Just ready to go everyday, no hassle. If you don't like the trigger pull see a gunsmith. But don't pass up this affordable, reliable and accurate firearm! more

First firearm for me so I'm not able to review as good as others. This is a great gun for someone on a buget. I purchased mine in Concord, NC. At the time of purchase, Academy had this priced the cheapest I'd f...ound it. Has a nice feel to it. Even loaded it doesn't feel too heavy at all. Doesn't seem to have too much recoil either. I've shot over a 150 rounds through this gun and it's a very good weapon. After owning a G27 i didn't think anything would come close but I was wrong. This gun feels better in my hand and holds a tighter p...attern at 25'. A great gun to add to any collection. Every gun is different in the way it performs, that's why it's so important to take your time to get familiar and comfortable with it. Some people don't like the trigger pull(8.5), not a problem after a few clips. For the workmanship and price, it's worth owning. more

    Love it!
So far I've only shot 50 rounds, but it goes where you aim right out of the box. I like the construction and ease of disassembly. No problem with the trigger at all. I had read a few reviews of the earlier model hav...ing a heavy trigger. Being accustomed to revolvers I had no problem with this 8 lb. trigger. Sites are good and accurate. I can't believe you get this great of a handgun for the price. Excellent. I am so glad I chose the Sigma .40. I noticed the clip initially rattles a bit, but the rattling stops when you chamber a round. Feels good in the hand. Buy it, you won't regret it. more

    Good gun for the price
I have put over 300 rounds through it and its DEADLY accurate as long as your target is less than 25 yds. For the price, you CANNOT beat this gun. Ive shot all sorts of ammo through this gun, from Hornady Critical Defens...e (preference) all the way to reload bulk ammo for target practice. It took all ammo, not one failure to feed, failure to fire, or failure to eject. I like the capacity of this gun. Conceals easily too. Would for sure recommend to anyone. more

    Great Pistol
Got this around the end of Sept. I have put about 500 rounds through it so far no problems from the gun. Shoots good groups and feels great in my hand. Smith and Wesson has fixed the trigger in this model from the origin...al Sigma's. No gritty trigger pull and the feed ramp is much better as well. The trigger pull is still a little hard, manual says it is 8lb +or-. If you are used to a standard automatic pistol trigger this one will take a little getting used to. If you shoot a lot of double action revolvers you should be right at home with this trigger. One thing, do not try and do the trigger jobs you can find on youtube with this model. The assembly is entirely different from the original Sigma and there are not multiple springs in this one. Only one pig tail spring that is a real bear to get reassembled once taken apart. This pistol has eaten up any ammo I have tried without any problems. You really can't go wrong for the price. more

    The gun has issues
We planned on buying a compact pistol for cc. Not sure why we left the store with this oneEnded up going back and getting a S&W 38. We've had a lot of fun shooting the sd9ve probably 500 rounds so far. Its had an iss...ue with the slide locking back with an empty mag. The mag fits pretty loose and if you push it up into the gun the mag will work as it should. I sent the both mags back to S&W hopefully I get better ones. more

The Sherman tank of the S&W line up
I love this gun, it never fails (in my experience) always accurate. The only negative I would give it is the trigger pull, it does take a while to get used to it, its very long..with that being said once you get used to ...it its a non issue. For the money I dont think you would find a better gun. more

    Great Value for the price
Obviously, this handgun isn't going to necessarily stack up with some of the more expensive Glocks or higher end Sig Sauers. However, I purchased this gun when it was on sale and I have been extremely satisfied with my p...urchase. I have put 1000 rounds through it since I purchased it four months ago. I have run brass and steel through it and it has performed beautifully. It's well built, easy to clean, and for a double stack 9mm it's not enormous. It has great ergonomics and the 3 dot sights do the job you need them too. One of the best parts of this gun is the magazines. When buying cheaper handguns, manufacturers sometimes skimp on the mags. These mags are all steel and are very robust. 16 rounds in 9mm and 14 rounds in .40 smith and wesson is a perfect size. I use this as my primary carry every day and I have complete confidence that it will perform if I need to use it. I use the Federal HST as my personal defense rounds. more

    S&W SD9 in FDE
My FDE Smith and Wesson SD9 is a good looking gun, extremely reliable, and not surprisingly, very accurate. After all, it is a S&W. The overall feel in my hand is very good, allowing for a full purchase on the grip. ...Though the stippling on the back strap is borderline aggressive, it is manageable. This gun points well, and sight acquisition is quick with its large white 3-dot sighting system, allowing for accurate shot placement. I do like the slide serrations which allow for a positive grip when racking the slide. Field stripping and reassembly is easy, making for quick work of cleaning. The steel magazines feel of quality and drop free with the easily assessable mag release. As for the trigger, well it has always been a topic. Yes, it has a long, heavy and somewhat gritty pull, but must be recognized that it is by design. And quite honestly, it’s really not as bad as people make it out to be. So in conclusion, whether you are a novice shooter or have been at it for awhile, this is a very good gun at a very good price. more

    Awesome
I have the older version of this gun, the SW9VE Sigma, and it feels great in my hand with minimal recoil. I bought it 10 years ago for home defense, and recently began carrying it concealed. This gun has been downright a...bused yet it keeps on firing. I have easily put thousands of rounds through it at the range using a variety of types of ammunition made by nearly every manufacturer, and I promise that I have only had one jam. I'm willing to bet it was the round, and not the firearm at fault. If this version is anything like its older brother, it is a fantastic gun, especially for the price; I can't say enough wonderful things about it. more

    A Good Smith&Wesson Product
I have two of these pistols (SD9 VE) and am well pleased with the quality and so far the pistol just eats anything (I've never had a jam with it) and i shoot federal aluminum , Federal brass , and winchester's USA FORGED... steel cased and put about 1000-1500 rounds into each gun . My only thing to say is the sd9 is redisgned sigma and you could take a glock slide and put it on and it will still shoot and vice versa for a glock 17 . Im not sure but even the mags will do but I think it causes a feeding issue (my friend tols me about the magazine thing (he owns one too) But overall it is excellent and i do recommend it to anyone. more

    Excellent value pistol!
I bought this for a home defense gun which for the price is pretty hard to beat. It was always sold out at my local Bass Pro so when I saw it in stock I jumped on it. The mags were kinda tight getting 16 in there but onc...e you get them in just leave them in and the springs loosen up. Not the best trigger but does the job since there's no safety it's supposed to be kinda hard to pull. Many have suggested changing it.. I suggest getting comfortable with it as it is. Great CCW for Large Hands
It's a great CCW gun for a person with large hands, I picked up the SDVE 40 because I wanted a bit more power than my 9MM, It's now my primary CCW, my brother in law is a big guy and wanted to pick up a CCW but the compa...ct guns didn't fit his hand well, when I had him try my SDVE 40 out, it fit his hand well and he was comfortable shooting it, he decided to get the SDVE 9MM and he loves it. I shot his 9MM and it was actually nicer to shoot than my 40 at the range, the difference in recoil between the two calibers made target shooting with the 9MM much more enjoyable. However I bought the 40 to get a bit more power for my primary CCW, so a bit more kick is fine with me. The breakdown is simple and it's very easy to clean, I definitely recommend both the 40 and the 9MM, if your looking for a reasonably priced 40 or 9MM, this is a great choice as a first purchase for anyone. more

This pistol has become one of my favorites to shoot. Great price. Shoots well, very accurate. Takes a little time to get used to the trigger pull, which can be changed if you wanted. For me, it fits in my hand very well,... with a comfortable grip. I could not find a fiber optic sight for this, not a real big deal. Always works
When I was looking for an EDC I shopped around for a few months and landed on this. When I first bought it there was equal praise and disgust but most of the naysayers were Glock groupies. Great first purchase weapon
I was in the military for 14 years as a MP, been working as a DOD Police for the last 3 years. Our pistol we use is the Beretta 9mm, great pistol very little kick. But since I've been out and been working the civilian si...de of things. I've come to realize that there may come a time were I will have to defend myself, my family or others. So I did a lot of reading, read many reviews and I kept coming back to Smith & Wesson primarily the SD40 VE. So I finally bought this as my first pistol. I made a great decision, SD40 VE is very light and fits very comfortable in your hand. Even with 15 rounds in the pistol still very light. Without any news of when that handgun would be in stock, I decided to purcha...se the SD40VE. First and foremost, you can't go wrong with the price. At $370, this was a very affordable gun, especially for my first handgun purchase. more

    Love this pistol
I've had this gun for about a year and I love it. It is the second semi auto that I have owned and is my primary carry gun. I go to the range very frequently and I've put more than 1,000 rounds through it with only a few... (less than 5) instances of failure to eject (99% of the time it was when I was using IMI ammo). The gun is accurate, easy to shoot, and American made. I highly recommend it. more

Bought this gun about 3 month back. Very reasonable price $369.00, been through about 350 rounds of the worth ammo I’ve ever had. Not one hiccup. Fits perfect in my big old hands. Defiantly recommend it.

    SD40 VE
Having this 40 cal. over six months now and I have put rounds down range almost every weekend. Being very pleased with the service and only fired FMJ rounds which I never had any trouble. I got this as a gift and being a... Retired LEO I have owned and carried S&W. But I went to putting some defensive rounds down range and I started to get some trouble. Thinking that I would clean it which I always did, made a few calls to some guys that I trust. Each One of Them said get the SS guide rod with a 20lb.spring from Galloway Precision which I did. Being told that it will be a Great investment and I would be able to handle any rounds down it. I have been very pleased with this sweet rig and it feels good in my hands. I am going to say this will be a Keeper. And it was a Great Gift that was gotten from Cabelas. more

    SD40VE
The machine work on this gun is awesome.Smooth to the point that its close to a ground finish.I have only shot my reloads in this gun and it has functioned perfect. To me the trigger is fine.Accuracy?Watch some Youtube vi...deos from people who can shoot.I think its way more accurate than I am.Some have complaints about the plastic guide rod and rear sight. You may want to note that the bottom half of the gun is plastic and this all has to do with carry weight. I think this gun is well worth the price and I would without a doubt bye it again. One thing i would add is that I have small hands and the grip size is great which is good considering the 14 round capacity . more

    Great HomeD Pistol
Awesome pistol. Never had a problem. If you are looking for an expert arm keep looking, but if you want a durable, long lasting composite pistol with a punch for home defense or occasional target practice this is for you.... Trigger is long and heavier than most would like but it's only 8lbs. There are many cost effective trigger kits available but I wouldn't recommend that for this pistol or any pistol with no safety. more

    Update: 11 months later
I am writing this as a follow-up to my first review. Almost a year later and this pistol has only gotten better. I did adjust the sights. Also, the trigger smooths out quite a bit after a few hundred rounds and a few clea...nings. It is now a point and shoot marvel. Over all, I would say this is not only a rival to the Glock, but the price makes it superior to the old workhorse. Clean it properly before firing and religiously for the first few hundred rounds is what I would recommend. My piece has gone through adverse weather conditions (from 104 degrees F down to 5 degrees F, including in the rain and the snow, holstered for 16 hours at a time as well as in use), long periods without cleanings (everyday open carry on top of 1000 rounds fired for two months in sandy, windy weather), on top of being dropped (oops...it was empty, don't worry....cleaning time) and banged around while on my hip (it is a big gun and the blackhawk cqc sticks out a bit). Can you tell that I like this pistol? If you can, own both of these pistols in both calibers while you can get your hands on them. It is not the best on the market, but the quality is excellent as well as reliability and especially considering the price. A complement to any collection, a must for those looking to fill a specific need. This gun can play many roles. more

    Very Happy
After reading many reviews over and over again. I finally bought this as my first handgun. I gotta say, I made a wise decision. This gun is light and fits very comfortable in your hand. Finally took it out shooting a cou...ple of weeks after I bought. Once again, no regrets. Fired off over 200 rounds with no issues. No stove pipes, no failure to feed. Nothing. Only one small issue that everyone is posting that I will agree with. The magazine springs are a little stiff at first. But really, who cares. I just might purchase the 9mm version as well. more

Shoots great, I've only put about 400 rounds through it and no problems so far. Overall, great handgun!
I've owned multiple guns and have purchased this as I needed an economical gun that was reliable and shoots well. This gun does it all: reliable (I've shot 800+ rounds with no problems) and accurate. It has a heavy trigg...er pull but after a bit of shooting, not a problem. I installed an Apex trigger kit which helped quite a bit. I shoot some great groupings at the range. more

I use it as my every day carry gun, and I've found it very comfortable to carry, light, and easy to conceal. GREAT GUN !!!
I purchased this gun in 9mm about 3 weeks ago from Hoffman Estates, so far i have put 500 rounds of diff types of ammo through this thing and they all have the same results no jams no problems and ACCURATE !!!. Now when ...i bought this gun i was looking into a M&P the difference in price did make a difference in my decision but the main reason was the fit and feel in my hand the sd9ve felt much better to me, the M&P is a great gun i have shot it many times but it is deff not worth the $200+ more then the sd9ve. My only worry when i bought this was the complaint about the trigger. Me personally i like the trigger and i dont see any problems with it. i like that it has a nice tight trigger and felt really nice, did not tire out my hand or mess up my groupings.Actually i think it helped me shoot a bit better then i normally do. Also this is very easy to take down clean and put back. if the trigger is that much of an issue for you they do sell a trigger kit for cheep that will give it the same pull as an M&P. The biggest problem i have with this gun is that people call it a budget gun. The gun is very well made feels solid and shoots just as good as higher priced hand guns. Not to mention you can actually afford ammo after purchasing this gun. more

Fantastic, Very Reliable, Accurate & Slick 9mm!
I recently puchased a SD9VE, and I'm very happy with it. This gun is comfortable and fun to shoot, and dead on accurate! So far I shot close to 2,000 rounds through it and not a single jam, FTE etc,I can hit 75ft and hol...d 4 inch groupings with this gun. Comes with 2 magazines and a key lock of course. It's a great deal, I recommend it to anyone looking to shoot a 9mm without spending alot. It's very easy to takedown and clean quick. Features Stainless slide and barrell with a steel fixed front sight and a rear adjustable sight for windage. Feels even better with a Hogue HandAll Grip on it, especially if you have big hands like me. Recoil on it is very manageable. The trigger is tight, but feels real good to me at 7 pounds it's pretty smooth action. This gun has no safety so this tight long trigger is the safety! It's also a good carry option, dimensions are similar to a Glock 17/19 but it looks better and has a nicer finish overall, get one and enjoy! more

This is a very good gun for the price. Very similar to the M&P. It is a full size gun with a 14+1 clip. Trigger pull is long, but very smooth. Happy Happy Happy
I went to a local place to 'try out' semi-automatic guns and at that location I tried out various Glocks. They were nice. I then did some research and talked with friends who are very knowledgeable re: firearms. I then s...poke to wonderful salesman Jack at Cabela's in Glendale, AZ. He took the time to show me the Glock and then the Smith & Wesson. I really liked the feel of the Smith & Wesson SDVE 9mm, the other feature I liked was the ease of releasing the magazine - just a push with my thumb. The rail was much easier to slide than the Glock was also. My husband told me to purchase this as my Anniversary gift (37yrs) if this is what I thought I would like. We took it out this morning and shot it. I fell in love with it on the first shot. It was much smoother than the Glock, the magazine loaded easier also - did have a bit of difficulty on #16 but that was the only issue I had (oh and my husband had the same issue, so it wasn't just a 'woman thing'. I am a novice with weapons and I am sold on this weapon. After we went shooting we went back to Cabela's and I purchased the UpLULA for loading the magazine. I came home and used it and problem solved. I also love that this weapon is so easy to dismantle for cleaning. Also the Smith & Wesson was priced at a more reasonable price over the Glock. I'm very very pleased with this purchase & would recommend it to anyone that asked. I wish I could give it a higher rating. more

    fun pistol
I bought the SD40VE and it is a fun shooting pistol. Shoots good and the action is smooth. I only gave it a 4 star rating for two reasons. One is the trigger pull is long. Makes it tough to get use to with the long pull.... Second is that the two clips it comes with are a pain to load. I called Smith and ask them and they just said that is the way it is. Spring tension to push the shells down to load is the pain in the thumbs to do. I bought a speed loader and if you own or buy one of these pistols you must have a speed loader if you want an easy way to load the clips. Other than these two things it is a great pistol and I would say buy one if you can find one to buy right now. Shells are not a bad price compaired to other cal. again if you can find them right now. more

    First Gun Purchase..Very Pleased
I am very happy with my purchase of the SD.40. The only complaint I have about the gun is that the two serrated buttons that seperate the slide from the frame are very difficult to operate. It sounds easy enough in the d...irections but you better have some strong finger nails to slide them both down at the same time. If anyone has any better suggestions on how to operate them, please let me know. I have put about 75 rounds through this gun and it shoots nicely at 10-15 yards. After that, it is more difficult to keep a close pattern but I believe that I will improve with more practice. No misfires or jams whatsoever. Where ear and eye protection. This pistol is loud. more

Fired less than 100 hounds through it and the tirgger housing pin kept sliding out on the left side of the frame. Pushed the pin ...back in and continued to shoot...pin slides out again.
