The world of tactical rifles forever changed in 2004 when Springfield Armory® introduced the M1A™ SOCOM 16. 7.62NATO power in a package this small was previously unthinkable. Shooters who need a compact rifle no longer have to settle for a lesser caliber, although they can expect less felt recoil and less muzzle rise, thanks to the SOCOM 16′s unique design.

This gun has been on my want list for a long time but I could never justify the price tag. At 1299 I had to buy! Fit and finish are outstanding and the Kryptek Highlander camo stock rocks! I also found that the Holosun hs503fl circle dot with the low mount cowitnesses.Circle dot lines up perfectly with top of front post. The rifle also ships with a nice soft side tactical case which was a nice surprise and this model also has solid picatinny rail instead of the old style split rail. ...more
Just buy it. If you are looking for an M1A it comes down to three basic choices of barrel length. The 16" SOCOM 18" Scout/Squad or the 22" all else. For size versatility and general use rifle it is hard to beat the SOCOM or Scout rifles. I especially like the addition of the rail forward of the action for scout scope or dot sight. Weapon is not a tack driver but it is a reliable design that has been in military service longer than any rifle ever designed. ...more
I don't write many reviews but this rifle certainly deserves all the raves it receives. I was concerned about how heavy it might feel but to me its quick and easy to handle. It arrived at my ffl in three days that's pretty quick it got there before I could get there. The reason I wanted to write this review is that this rifle comes with an included soft case .It not some pos either I would have included a picture but I'm sure you can you tube it. ...more
Mine had to have a new front site post installed due to the fact that the factory one was to short and the weapon would not zero correctly at 100 yards. Sent it in to Springfield and they installed a new one in no time. I would say the recoil is less than that of an AK it has a real nice push rearward in your shoulder. Very easy shooting in rapid fire and stays on target well. Probably the most natural pointing and handiest rifle I have ever handled. The paint job doesn't look like it will hold up forever but it does have a good look to it for now. ...more
I have been waiting to review to get some shooting time in and I must say "I love this rifle". It has very low recoil and It fired several types of ammo I fed it without issue. I mounted a Burris scout scope but lapped the rings and leveled before sighting in. No issues there as I was on paper and sighted in in 6 shots at 25 yards. My nephew had his full sized match M1A and we traded to see the difference. His had a lot more recoil with the same ammo but shot long distance more accurate. The SOCOM is a lot shorter and lighter fast to get on target has less recoil and louder. They are both great but for different uses. I'm glad Springfield makes the different lengths so you can choose what you will be using it for. The quality of these are top notch and they are very dependable. I plan to use it for hunting in WV this year and cant wait. I would like to get one of the longer lengths M1A's to use for longer distance hunting someday also. If you can only have 1 M1A and have longer shots then I would go with the mid or full length instead. Where I hunt the deer are close and quick fast shots are the norm. This rifle is perfect with enough power to drop deer in their tracks! ...more
