The Type 99 light machine gun was a light machine gun used by the Imperial Japanese Army in World War II. It was designed by Kijiro Nambu in 1939. The Type 99 light machine gun was produced at Kokura, Nagoya Arsenal and Mukden with a total production of about 53,000 weapons. The Type 99 was basically the same design as the Type 96 light machine gun, and had a number of parts in common. However, it dispensed with the oiler and had better primary extraction, increasing reliability over its predecessors. Early models had a mono-pod at the stock and a flash suppressor on the muzzle, which was screwed onto a threaded portion of the gun barrel. A top-mounted curved detachable box magazine held 30 rounds, and the finned gun barrel could be rapidly changed to avoid overheating. The Type 99 had a blade front sight and a leaf rear sight, with graduations from 200 to 1,500 meters, with a wind adjustment. A 2.5X telescopic sight with a 10 degree field of view could be attached at the right side of the gun. These were often issued to the best marksmen of the unit and occasionally employed like a sniper rifle. A standard infantry bayonet could be attached to the gas block below the barrel, but on the battlefield this feature proved inconsequential due to the weight of the gun and the fact that the blade was largely obstructed by the flash hider when it was fixed on the muzzle.

Nambu Type 99 Features

The Nambu Type 99 is a fully-automatic gas-operated machine gun that operates on a long-stroke gas piston and falling-block lockup.  It was built with a 20.5 inch finned quick-detach  barrel to allow for faster barrel cooling (by increasing the surface area).  The iron sights are offset to the left of the bore to accommodate the top-loaded magazine.

Nambu Type 99 Ballistics

Nambu Type 99 Capacity

The Type 99 is chambered in 7.7x58mm Arisaka and feeds from curved detachable box magazines.  These magazines are inserted into the top of the gun for two reasons with the first allowing gravity to assist in reliable feeding and the second allowing the assistant gunner to easily reload magazines from a prone position without having to move the gun off its target.

The Type 99 measures 46.5 inches long with an unloaded weight of 22.9 pounds giving it the same weight as the BREN gun that it often gets mistaken for and making it approximately two inches longer.  These attributes allowed the Type 99 to easily be carried and deployed to different positions far easier than the M1919’s it faced at the expense of more frequent reloads.

Nambu Type 99 Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The Type 99 offers its best performance when fired from a prone or supported position, though it can easily be fired from the hip with the stock tucked under the shoulder and the support hand on the carry handle.  Later versions of the Type 99 included a folding front grip that allowed its users to more easily fire the gun from the shoulder.

Nambu Type 99 Fit & Finish

The Nambu has a receiver that us cut from one single block of steel making it very durable, however its strange and asymmetric geometry would cause it to heat unevenly which would lead to warping and reliability issues.  The Type 99 can be set up to fire .308 Winchester with a simple barrel change due to the geometry of the bolt and magazine.
