The Adaptive Combat Rifle (ACR) is a modular assault rifle designed by Magpul Industries of Austin, Texas, and known initially as the Masada. In late January 2008, Bushmaster Firearms International entered into a licensing agreement with Magpul whereby Bushmaster would take over production, future development, and sales of the Masada.[5] It was then known as the Bushmaster ACR. However, Remington Arms is contracted to manufacture the rifle for the US military and US law enforcement agencies, in which it is known as the Remington ACR. Hence, Remington Arms is responsible for the selective fire version of the ACR, while Bushmaster Firearms International is responsible for the semi-automatic only version. The Remington ACR was one of the weapons displayed to U.S. Army officials during an invitation-only Industry Day on November 13, 2008. The goal of the Industry Day was to review current carbine technology prior to writing formal requirements for a future replacement for the M4 Carbine. It was also part of the Individual Carbine competition to replace the M4.

Bushmaster ACR Features

The Bushmaster ACR was originally designed by Magpul to deliver everything the M4 couldn’t.  Its fully-adjustable stock allows the user to change their length of pull as well as their cheek weld, and the rifle can be fired with the stock folded.  It has fully-ambidextrous controls and takes AR15 pattern magazines.  The reversible charging handle is far enough away from the full-length optics rail to allow users to cycle the action without cutting their fingers up on scope mounts.  The ACR is gas operated and uses a short-stroke gas piston and a bolt carrier similar to an AR18.  The handguard is easily removable, as is the barrel, and can be swapped for many aftermarket options.

Bushmaster ACR Capacity

Able to accept all AR15 style magazines, the Bushmaster ACR provides the user with capacities to match any AR15.  Detachable box magazines include capacities of 10, 20, 30, 40, 60, and 100 rounds and also accepts 60 and 100 round drum magazines.
Weighing slightly less than a standard AR15 at 6.6 pounds, the ACR is just as mobile and handy as the AR.  However, the folding, adjustable stock of the ACR allows for even more mobility by making it easier for the user to navigate close quarter environments and to get in and out of vehicles.

Bushmaster ACR Ergonomics

Ergonomics
Aside from the charging handle, the controls of the Bushmaster ACR are extremely similar to the AR15.  Originally designed by Magpul, Inc., the ACR features superior modern sporting rifle ergonomics to its competition.  The collapsing stock allows different size shooters to fit the gun to their shoulder while the adjustable comb built into the stock allows users to get a proper cheek weld.  Along the front of the trigger guard sits an ambidextrous bolt-release lever, replacing the ping-pong paddle found on the side of an AR15.  The slightly longer (front to back) pistol grip provides another layer of comfort, though the grip isn’t modular like on an AR.  The charging handle sits under the full-length optics rail and features a downward bend to keep the user’s fingers from unwanted damage while cycling the bolt.  The handguards can be replaced with the pull of one pin, allowing the user to choose the most comfortable or appropriate handguard.

Bushmaster ACR Fit & Finish

Bushmaster’s ACR features a durable and sturdy polymer stock, lower receiver and handguard.  The aluminum upper receiver sports a Type III hard anodized coating and the internals are made with a black nitride finish.  Upon inspection, users will note large gaps between the bolt and receiver which were implemented to allow sand and foreign materials to fall through the gun instead of making tolerances so tight that nothing foreign could enter the system.  The stock, forend, and receivers all meet up to tight fits giving the user a solid-feeling rifle.
