Heritage Rough Rider Info

*This model does not meet requirements for melting point laws. Born of the traditions of the Old West, the Rough Rider maintains much of the look and feel of the legendary Single Action Army revolver, only in a scaled down version. Chambered for the .22LR the Rough Rider is manufactured using state-of-the-art precision machinery that assures its accuracy and reliability. The cylinder lock-up is tight and the perfect timing of the action makes for a handgun that will put its shots where you want ’em. The machined barrel is micro-threaded and inserted into the frame for the optimal barrel/cylinder gap to give you maximum ammunition performance. A hammer block mounted in the recoil shield provides extra protection and has a red dot indicator that lets you know when the gun is ready for action. A new, more authentic looking flat-sided hammer paired with new exotic cocobolo grips, makes the Rough Rider both functional and handsome. There are also other grip materials available, plus finish options include the attractive and durable Smooth Silver Satin. When it comes to the Rough Rider there are no shortcuts taken! Ideal for hunting, plinking or western action shooting, let the Rough Rider be your choice in a new rimfire revolver. The Heritage Rough Rider looks like it belongs in an old Western, with a design reminiscent of the classic Colt Single Action Army revolver. The wooden hand grip, aluminum frame and steel barrel give the gun a substantia...l, sturdy feel. It's amazing. Overall, I’m pretty impressed with the build quality, especially at this price point. After thousands of rounds and countless cleaning sessions, the finish is starting to wear off on the front of the cylinder on mine, but beyond that I have not had any issues with the gun’s long term durability or functionality. I have purchased 3 so far, and will probably start to purchase as gifts! I can't believe the quality I got for so few dollars. more

Having an infinitive fascination with 19th fire arms I had to buy it. The Heritage is an inexpensive firearm I really bought it for just the joy of owning it, but after firing at the rang. I am very pleased with the Heritage. It is a nice little revolver at a good price. It was cold outside when I received it so I only fired about 6 rounds through it and four out of six hit the bulls eye at a 7 yards -- ve...ry accurate. Dealing with Bud's was easy and I would recommend them. more

Great quality and value for the price
The particular one I purchased came with a .22lr cylinder and a .22 mag cylinder. The gun is very simple and easy to clean. The only thing I’d really like to change, is make the tab on the ejector a little larger (...I don’t have Goliath hands but it’s still a bit small to me and doesn’t feel comfortable after using a lot) Also the screw that holds the ejector to the barrel doesn’t want to stay tight. Remove it and add some high temp loctite then tighten fully and let it sit overnight and you should be fine. It still functions fine, but the slight movement bugs me. The sights are fixed, but very nice. Gun shoots pretty accurate. The holes in the cylinders for the bullets seem a bit tight at first but after shooting for a while they seem to “break in” and the casings will easily pop out of them when done. Gun has over 500 rounds of .22LR through it and roughly 100 rounds of .22 Mag. Recently I noticed one misfire with the .22LR and one misfire with the .22 Mag. Both times you could tell the pin had struck the rim but the bullet failed to go off. I used the same ammo I had been using. It could have been a bad bullet from each caliber, or I didn’t get the gun cleaned as well as I thought. After each misfire it worked flawless. Once I rotated the bullet slightly so that the pin would strike a different area of the rim, it went right off. I’m somewhat leaning towards a freak failure on the ammo side. Long story short, the gun looks great, shoots great, and I love it. I’m currently planning to order the same model in .357 caliber. more

The problems are normal?? Service Rep says "Yes!"
I purchased this 9-shot revolver when Cabelas had them on sale and am now pretty sad I did. I found that the hammer will easily fall on the third click (should ONLY fall on the fourth) and the cylinder won't line up for ...loading and unloading. You have to manually hold the cylinder in the correct place to insert or eject a shell. more

I wasn't expecting much for a revolver priced less than $150.00. But as it turns out, this is actually a nice little handgun. It is well built and has a surprising heft to it. All parts fit together nicely and the cylind...er timing is fine. Gun disassembles easily for cleaning. The only thing to keep in mind is this is a single action revolver. You have to pull the hammer back for every shot. Also this gun loads through a gate at the rear of the cylinder. The cylinder does not swing out. All cartridges must be loaded one at a time and ejected one at a time as you rotate the cylinder. I bought this for my wife who has smaller hands and absolutely loves it. It may not be a tactical semi auto, but it's nostalgic and a lot of fun to shoot. more

    returned 9 shot mulfuctioning revolver
Terrible service repair. I purchased one of these 9 shot revolvers new from local store and immediately had problems. Barrel was loose so i locktited it. Extracting rod would not line up with chambers. One cylinder would... not fully lock up in position to fire and caused multiple misfires. I sent it back to Heritage and as of today it's been almost two months and no response. I've tried calling about 10 times with no answer and I've sent three emails with absolutely no response. Terrible, terrible, terrible. Not sure if I'll ever see the gun again. Truly a poor way to run a service department. Even left my phone # and no response. more

Nice little gun for the price
Bought this for students to use in my Introduction to Pistol Shooting Class. Liked the single action revolver format, but did not want to invest the amount a Ruger Single Six would cost for a gun students would use for a...bout 50 rounds prior to stepping over to a semi-auto as part of the class. Picked up on sale for $129 plus tax so it was a steal. had a coupon for the .22 mag cylinder for ~$29, but don't think I will go that route as I want to keep stress low with standard velocity .22LR for training. Finish was decent and accuracy from 15 yards was acceptable for training purposes (all rounds easily in the A-Zone of an IDPA target). put 100 rounds through without a hiccup. Loading and unloading was easy. Will have to wait and see about the long term reliability, but seems to do exactly what I wanted for this class. more

Perfect little gun. Rugged and right size for fast-draw target, trick shooting. Aluminum alloy frame and heavy steel barrel. I love this gun, and wish I had owned one years and years ago. Would have been a great training... and recreational piece. Shooting is fun and affordable again. Great looks, feel and quality. There are some noticeable machining marks of the frame, but....with a little wear on the finish they actually look good, giving a bit of character. Makes me smile every time I open the case. more

This firearm is a great value. Not sure you could get better quality for the price of this single-action revolver. This firearm is surprisingly heavy in a good way, reflecting the overall feel of the old Colt single-acti...on. This pistol has a good trigger for its price, a smooth action and just feels good to hold. On the downside the safety is a bit of a let down when it comes to mimicking that iconic western style. Cleaning and switching barrels is very easy and requires no extra tools. What I like most is that this revolver makes you slow down and appreciate every (tiny) piece of lead you can send down range. I recommend this firearm for anyone who wants a good plinking pistol or maybe someone who's interested in getting into firearms. more

Decent little plinking revolver for the money. Nice if you want a .22 to practice your handgunnery skills without breaking the bank. Personally I find single action revolvers loads of fun to operate so that's also a plus.... The only downside of this gun is that a cheap price can lead to lower quality in some cases. With I my gun I was mystified why my group was so far to the left. Eventually I realised my front sight was actually bent slightly to the right. A pair of pliers and a little elbow grease got her centered and sighted in right quick. more

Perfectly happy with this firearm and with Bud's. Despite it being about 1/3 the cost of a Ruger single-action .22 revolver, it's surprisingly accurate. I bought it as a teaching aid to teach a basic pistol course, so it... doesn't have to stand up to firing thousands of rounds. Also I'm very impressed with Bud's website--easy to navigate, great selection, and excellent prices. I'll be shopping Bud's again in the future. more

    Cylinder doesn't Lock up
As received, when cocking the gun the trigger would latch without the cylinder being in alignment. The chamber was still covered by the barrel forcing cone but who knows where the bullet would go. It was off target by 14..." @ 20 ft on one shot. Sent it back to Taurus for repair and 6 weeks later it got back. Exactly the same. Repair report says they fired 12 each of LR and Mag. They obviously didn't read my explanation of the problem. If you cock just until the trigger latched, as you might if rapid firing, there was a miss alignment. If you be sure to pull the hammer all the way back the cylinder rotates to lockup. I want something to beat around in the ATV and as long as I know what to expect I can live with this until it completely fails. The gun has in good feel and is pretty accurate so it will work for my needs but will have to watch carefully and not let other use it. more

    Quality Control? Not from Heritage
First time purchasing a revolver and I am extremely disappointed with the manufacturing of this gun even for the cheap price. I would have to say Heritage has absolutely no QC. Took this gun out to shoot for the first ti...me and it was shooting 8 inches high. Thought is was me not knowing the sites of this revolver, lowered my point of aim and I couldn't see the front sight. That's when I realized the rear U sight channel was not cut fully to the rear - it was solid metal!!!. No way to aim this gun. Shame on me for not noticing it before I paid for it, but there is NO WAY this should have left their factory. Now I have to wait 12+ weeks for repairs because they have to fix that many of their poor products. Cheap price is no excuse either, I have a Mossberg Blaze at same price level and it is flawless in every way. more

    Nice Plinker
Bought this for two reasons ... (1) Wanted a fun single action plinker that wouldn't break the bank and (2) wanted a 22 to carry when working out on the farm or deer lease that I wouldn't worry about nicking or getting a... bit dirty. This gun fills both requirements quite nicely. I bought the 6 inch barrel. I put 200 rounds through it at the range when I got it. It has good weight and balance and no noticeable recoil. With fixed sights, it's as accurate as your skill as a shooter. Took me about 20 rounds to get the feel of it and after that I was quite accurate with it. My only complaint (and the reason I gave it 4 stars) is the "Read the manual before use" stamped into the frame below the cylinder. Really? Totally unnecessary. more

    Not worth the headaches
This item just isn't designed well enough to warrant spending even entry level money on it. Unless you want to gain experience repairing guns. Less than 200 rounds in(over 3 years- so no warranty), I have the standard is...sue everyone else has reported with it. The flat spring that pushes against the cylinder control arm snapped inside the gun. The cylinder spins free and the gun won't fire. I am going to order the spring and do it myself since there are enough other people with this issue, that repair videos exist for this very thing. The gun is now sitting in 20 pieces on my table waiting for the spring to arrive. after that, it is going to the trash if it doesn't work. When it worked it was fun for a while. I write this off as a design defect(Cheap) vs. the part wearing out based on the number of others reporting this issue on other websites. more

    Beginners pistol
For a single action pistol it is good for beginners. forces them to take time with shots and learn to be conscious of operation of gun. The safety on a revolver is a bit redundant for an experienced gun user. and the sig...hts are not as adjustable as others out there. The gun is however good for a beginner to take there time, and a great asset to those experienced shooters, to introduce new shooters to revolvers. It is also affordable enough to utilize in poor conditions, and not be afraid of ruining an expensive investment. more

    Heritage Rough Rider single-action .22
I have been wanting to get one of these for some time now. I bought the 4.75 inch barrel length just because I liked the looks of it better. I took it out to the range and fired off a couple of boxes of .22 ammo. I have ...never owned a single-action before and it took a little bit to get used to all the steps necessary to fire and reload the pistol. It was a lot of fun to shoot and it was pretty accurate. I didn't try the .22 mag cylinder this trip but will give it a try next time. The weight of the gun is 33.4 ounces and has a nice feel to it. The safety is in an odd place but after I use it a bit it should be fine. The fit and finish was surprisingly good for such an inexpensive gun. I figure that I will get several years of use from this gun and it might even inspire me to buy a .45 from Heritage down the road. more

For the money, you just can't beat these Heritage Arms Rough Riders. This is my third. Have a .22/.22 mag 6.5 inch, and a .45 big bore in addition to this one. All three say quality right out of the box. All were purchas...ed at Bud's, where I have always gotten the best prices and the best service in the industry. This gun has great looks, great action, and shoots like a dream. Don't want to leave the range once I start shooting it. Thanks to Heritage Arms and Bud's. I'll be back for more! more

    Fun little plinker.
I like this little wheel gun for belt carry out in the sticks .... it's a lightweight back up to my big rifle. Plus, it's cheap to shoot and accurate enough for an open sight revolver. I keep the .22WMR cylinder in mine,... for some extra "umph" downrange. . Cabela's descriptions can be unclear, so I'd recommend you call if you are wondering whether this comes with the extra .22 Winchester Magnum cylinder, or just the single .22LR cylinder. They sell both the one and two cylinder versions, at various times, and are typically unclear about this detail in the description. These go on sale sometimes, deeply discounted. Be safe and have fun ! more

    Got a lemon
Got this for a black Friday sale from Cabela's a few years back. Shot it fairly quickly after that and the darn thing had parts come off of it. Because I was able to tighten things back up, no harm done. Purchased a 22 m...ag cylinder for it that did I not try to install until recently. It will drop in but it won't allow the gun to cock. Looked at the regular cylinder and noticed that the dang thing has been fitted to the gun. Got in touch with Heritage and was advised simply that the 22 mag cylinder doesn't have to be fitted and have a nice day. So, I was left in the cold. I obviously got a lemon (I would assume) because of all the good reviews. However, I will never be buying anything made by Heritage again. more

    great little hogleg
i picked up this little revolver 6 months ago and am very happy with it I ran more than 1000 rounds so far and zero problems. its just plain fun to shoot. it is patterned after the old S.A.A colts and you do have to use ...the load one skip one rule when carrying even though it has a hammer block it don't have a transfer bar, so an empty chamber is free insurance against shooting yourself in the foot or something worse happening. for the 200 dollar price tag you get a great little revolver with minimum end shake and great accuracy with a little practice I was able to destroy water bottles at 10 yards and chase spent shot shells with all six shots. more

A Great Shooter With Good Looks!
I bought 2 of these Heritage Rough Riders. One with the 4.75 inch barrel and the other with the 3.5 inch barrel. I found both of these revolvers to be accurate and very well balanced. The 3.5 inch barrel has the birds he...ad grip and I was pleasantly surprised with the feel. Both of these guns a great shooters and make perfect camp guns. With the .22 Magnum cylinder, they make a fairly potent close range protection gun out in the sticks. The finish is very good for the price. I did not buy these guns to sit in a glass case. They are every day shooters and if you clean them after each shooting, they will certainly perform for you. You can pay more, but for my needs for a reliable shooter, I could not have bought better. more

    hertiage SA rim fire revolver
I bought this pistol online through Cabela's. I rec'd communications on when to expect it's arrival. It arrived timely. The pickup was painless. I also ordered the .22 mag cylinder and rec'd it quickly. I took it to the ...range and fired 3 cylinders of 22 long rifle and 3 cylinders of .22 mag at a ten yard target. This were no issues with loading or firing of the pistol. The pistol was as accurate as could be expected with the type of sights it came with. I did shoot at cans about fifteen yards out and hit the cans more than I missed. On paper at 10 yards I had a couple of 2 inch groups. please read the instruction on the hammer position before attempting to load it. The pistol also has a safety on it which is nice too. Nice shooter
This is one of my favorite firearms. It's a lot of fun, and conserves your ammo, as opposed to a semi-auto, just due to what type of gun it is. Pretty darn accurate, even for a shooter like me who doesn't see so well any...more. Has no problems with any type of ammo. The only problem I have had is that after shooting a couple hundred rounds of magnum ammo every screw on the gun had loosened up, and one had fallen completely out. Heritage suggested loc-tite, so I have taken the gun apart and used purple loc-tite on each screw, hopefully that works, may have to switch to blue loctite, time will tell. Otherwise, I would recommend this gun to anyone, fun to shoot and inexpensive to purchase. more

    Great value for the money
I got the 4.75" barrel combo and often carry it around the property loaded with either 22LR or 22WMR because, apart from being a reliable and accurate shooter, the slightly downsized dimensions reduces bulkiness and... makes it light enough that I forget I'm wearing it. Complainers about cylinder lock up need to learn to pull the hammer back to half or full cock with a crisp and definite stroke. Tentative unsure handling tends to jam the cylinder and stress parts, so handling skills need to be practiced. One can also polish and tune the innards to minimize those issues. One review criticized the "paint" coming off too readily, and, sure, the bluing (not paint) on these guns is more of an after thought, but, frankly, on a bargain priced working gun it doesn't matter. Just keep it clean and oiled, handle it properly, and, even if a spring or other part will eventually need to be replaced, as with any well used gun, this Heritage should serve for a lifetime. more

Believe in Made in USA - so awesome
During the late 90s/early 2k, I checked out Heritage a couple of times, the surface finishes were pretty rough, "bluing" looked like black paint. But last week I was shocked to see the micro groves (lathe marks...?) on the smooth and true cylinder, and the nice bluing/micro etching on the barrel, and the beautiful wood grips, I bought one right away. "Made in USA" means constant improving on tooling and quality, Heritage surely didn't stop. Also Academy does price matching, that alone make it my favorite store. more

Great gun and its fun to shoot too
I bought this gun last month and boy I'm impressed. Went to the range and shot through about 50 rounds. Never failed...and my grouping was within a inch or so. Did I mention it was fun to shoot? It's a single a...ction so don't expect to much. But for the price you can't beat it. If your looking for an inexpensive gun that's fun and relaible for your collection, get it. more

    Heritage .22 revolver
I bought this on a whim as a backup gun that would be dragged through the mountains. I am impressed with accuracy and ease of handling. After 300 rounds the cylinder finish is tarnished to a dull grey/black. Not a show p...iece but definitely reliable. more

    22 Mag. revoler
I was looking for an American made .22 Mag revolver. For the price an accuracy I am pleased. Plinking it can use shorts, longs or long rifle. With the two cylinders I have many options. Years ago I had one an was not imp...ressed but these new ones are much better. A piece of paper was put next to the cylinder an fired. No lead or powder burns on the paper. A good investment. more

    Cowboy up
I own several cowboy action 45 long colts and 22 revolvers. This Rough Rider is fun to shoot and feels great in the hand. Nice and solid. I have shot over 500 rounds through it so far with no misfire. It liked winchester... ammo, but shot other brands as well without issue, I have the 4.75 inch barrel and it shoots pretty straight, target practiced with small targets and was about 90% on the mark, the other 10% was probably me. more

    Good Gun for the Price
Got this recently on a fathers day sale. Mine came with the 22 mag cylinder as well. Lots of forums say these are cheap and not worth buying, others say they are perfectly functional. I am in the latter. I have shot prob...ably 200 rounds (some mags) and it works just fine. Accuracy is also good, the weak link is me , not the gun. The mag cylinder model gives you the option of a respectable self defense weapon with virtually no recoil at a price you can afford easily. more

    Nice pistol
This is a nice little rim fire pistol. Since it is a .22, you can shoot it a lot for little cost (when you can get ammo). The workmanship and finish on this gun is top notch. excellent inexpensive revolver
I have owned a Rough Rider for over 10 years. Its a solid, functioning revolver that is about 2/5 of the cost of a Ruger. Its not a Ruger, but its a good gun. I have used and abused this pistol. I have shot birdshot most...ly while hunting carpenter bees around my out buildings. Pretty fun. The birdshot is messy and I broke the ejector rod, that was a simple fix. And the birdshot has destroyed the barrel riflings which is not the pistols fault. I am getting a 2nd Rough Rider and it won't see birdshot. The magnum cylinder works fine. Its not pretty like the Ruger, but its about 2/5 the cost to. The pistol is fine accuracy wise. more

    Amazing Revolver!
I did a lot of research, and couldn't find a revolver that could beat this one! I was a little confused why it had a safety, but the gun is easy to manipulate and makes it easy to practice safe shooting. Some reviews sai...d that the first few hundred rounds weren't very accurate, but I have found otherwise. It is very fun to carry around, and looks real nice if you holster it in a Triple K Cheyenne Centerfire Revolver Holster. I was somewhat disappointed when I found that the bluing was rubbing off from drawing it from the holster throughout a week's use, but it just adds to the rugged look that this revolver has. This is the first revolver I have owned, and I can't imagine anything more I would want in a revolver. It gets you started on the right foot for just a handful of cash. more

For the money, this gun is hard to beat. Fun and shoots well, and the cylinders interchange with another longer barrel model I have, so I can use the mag cylinder from my other heritage revolver in this gun too and shoot... .22 mag rounds. This was my second order from Buds. Delivery was a little slower this time but still just a week from order to delivery to my FFL. I was impressed by the firearm during my initial inspection. Many have commented that the... finish is rough on these revolvers. Mine was very nice. Time will tell if it holds up. This gun is very nice quality. I was impressed and a little shocked just how nice it is for the price. The grips were beautiful. While it can shoot mag it does NOT come with the mag cylinder. The. mag cylinder is a available from Heritage for $29. Took it to the range and had a blast plinking with this thing. It is accurate and you can shoot all data for $20. It is a nicely weighted piece. Feels solid. Overall you would be hard pressed to find a better quality, fun, and good looking revolver for the price. more

Take pliers and file on first trip to the range. This may be my second review on this pistol, but has more details about how it performed at the range. With four different brands of ammo, three LR and one WMR, the pistol... shot left and slightly below bulls eye. At 10 yards, the grouping was less than two inches off of a sand bag. I bent the front sight slightly with the pliers and got closer to the bulls eye. After a second adjustment, the rounds were right in light from left to right, but was still low. The sight then needed filed down slightly to bring elevation in. With all four brands, the gun shot all over the bulls eye. At 25 yards, groupings with the LRs were still decent, but the WMR scattered some. The brands were Federal, Remington target, Remington HP (All with standard velocity) and CCI WMR. more

    Darn great revolver!
I just purchased this revolver yesterday, I got the fixed sight with the 4 3/4 inch barrel and Cocobolo grips. I can't believe the price is so low with both .22 LR and .22 Magnum cylinders, that's a great deal! I fits th...e hand great, points naturally, the action is crisp and the trigger has no grittyness or overtravel. Shooting this thing you just can't help to get a grin, it is so smooth! Completely lacking of recoil, eats any ammo you feed it and is dead accurate. I fed it Federals, Remingtons, CCI and Aguila ranging from 34 grains to 40 grains, solids and hollow points. It loads them and ejects them with the rod smoothly. From a rest at 25 yards it prints 2" groups all day. The frame is aluminum but the barrel and cylinders are steel so it should last a lifetime as the frame is much harder than the old brass frame revolvers which were much softer. This is a great bargain and great buy if you're looking for something cheap to shoot and keep the eye/trigger finger trained. It is also great for teaching the kids and the wife or the uninitiated as it doesn't intimidate them with noise or recoil. Buy one, you won't regret it!. more
