Remington 870 Hardwood Home Defense Capacity
The Remington 870’s Home Defense setup is available in 12 gauge (and 20 gauge but we don’t talk about that) and feeds from a fixed tube style magazine with a 4 round capacity. This shotgun is built with a 2.75” chamber for anyone asking. With the use of an easy-to-install spacer, this gun can also run those mini shotgun shells giving you 6 rounds in the tube.
Remington 870 Hardwood Home Defense Feature
The Hardwood Home Defense is a variant of the Remington 870 that is built with a full-length stock and 18.5 inch barrel which makes it the shortest 870 produced…until you toss a folding stock on it because you understand the need for close-quarter maneuverability since it’s a home defense gun. If you want to play by those rules, it gets shorter and lighter. This 870 does not have a drilled and tapped receiver.
Remington 870 Hardwood Home Defense Ergonomics
The controls, handling and ergonomics of the 870 Home Defense are identical to all other 870’s with the traditional forend (as opposed to the police grip) and has a center of gravity that is further back than other 870’s due to the shorter barrel. The stock has the same amount of drop as a normal 870 so switching between your trap n’ skeet gun and your home defense gun is just a matter of overall length.
Remington 870 Hardwood Home Defense Mobility
The 870 Home Defense measures 38.5 inches long and has an unloaded weight of 7.5 pounds giving it nearly the same mobility as the AR15 you insist on running with the stock fully extended. While navigating tight spaces is easier with such a short shotgun, it would be even easier if you attached an aftermarket folding stock or a collapsing / telescoping stock. It’s 2023, don’t be scared of technology.
Remington 870 Hardwood Home Defense Fit-N-Finish
Unlike the Express variants, the Remington 870 Hardwood Home Defense is built on a forged receiver which is definitely stronger than the machined Express models. The steel parts are blued to prevent rust, however from 1967 to 2020, build quality has declined until Remington’s most recent purchase where they buckled down and started making quality firearms again. For this model, the stock and handguard are made of American Walnut with a rich matte finish.
