Savage Model 11 Trophy Hunter XP in .223 Remington

The rifle we’re looking at today is a left-hand variant chambered in .223 Remington. Upon receipt of the rifle the first task at hand was to remove the scope and rings and ensure the scope base screws were all properly torqued and weren’t bottoming out on the barrel shank (front screw). It is essential that you take the time to do this quick and easy check on any new package rifle you buy because it is a known cause of erratic accuracy – so save yourself the headaches and some ammo by taking a few minutes to do it right at the start. The scope mounts are standard low-grade cast aluminum Weaver-style bases and rings that Savage has been using for decades now, but they’re more than sufficient for 99% of whatever you could ever want to do with the rifle. Looking over the rifle in the shop I couldn’t help but notice that the Trophy Hunter’s synthetic stock has a much nicer finished quality than the standard synthetic (non AccuStock) stocks used on other models. There are no sharp mold separation lines running down the centerline of the stock, the checkering is much sharper and has more lines per inch, and the checkering pattern covers more area on the forearm. It’s still as flimsy and flexible as a wet noodle the same as the Axis and non-Trophy Hunter 11/111 synthetic stocks, but at this price point you can’t have everything. ...more

Gun arrived quickly and in excellent condition. Savage 11 Scout rifle is a real nice gun. Haven't fired it yet, but I'm sure it will hold up it's end of the deal.

NEVER EVER USE THEIR FINANCE PLAN!!!!! It’s a company out of California that is there to screw you completly over! If you’re are not able to pay it off in the amount of days off you chose then their interest sky rockets!!! I paid mine off prior to that problem but wanted to help someone out, let’s say you pay 2k, you will pay like 6k in interest with this company!!! Other than that, I love this gun and buds delivered again!!! ...more

My opinions on this rifle are divided. rnrnThe Good: Accurate, will shoot 1.5 MOA or better out of the box with decent to good quality factory loads (likes 155gr/168gr Hornady Black). rn Machining/Finish, good but could be better, mechanically sound and will eat whatever you feed it but the bolt is just a little chunky but should smooth out on it's own (hopefully). Holes drilled for scope base are DEAD ON the mark. Very well centered and the spacing is perfect. Barrel threads are very well cut and smooth. Feeds reliably and has no issues ejecting spent cases. Trigger is awesome, light and crisp. Three position safety works perfectly.rnrnThe not so good: Iron sights are awesome but you kinda need the rear sight to make a sight picture with the front. Mine was not included and was nowhere to be found inside the box but I scoped it, so realistically I'm not THAT worried about it. The stock: flimsy and flexes horribly, recoil pad is WAAAAY too soft and the sharp edges of the stock as a whole just seem to be unfinished. Lots of flash that had to be trimmed off of the edges and then sanded to avoid small cuts (like paper cuts which SUCK!) Also, check for mild corrosion on the bolt locking lugs as mine has it all over them as well as on the bolt face.rnrnOverall rating: 7/10 at best. Solid rifle that is lightweight, accurate and very reasonably priced. Would recommend as an affordable and well built entry level hunting/LRP Fundy's rifle, moreover great as a brush or truck gun. ...more

Great gun for the price. Mine is very accurate, especially with Barnes hand loads. I'm getting sub MOA groups. It shoots Remington Core-Lokt 150 grain bullets very well too. Yes, the stock if fugly, but that's not an issue for me with a brush gun.

Solid shooting gun, after 5 or so rounds I was putting them on the center at 100 yards and with peep sight. Pros - Solid trigger and action, nice rear peep sight with minor adjustments it will put you on the spot. Cons - I shoot left but handed and the cheek stock was in the way so I removed it, Also the magazine is hard to get into place it takes a little practice to be efficient but once in it performs, would like a slightly larger rear peep sight (like my Magpul on AR). Wouldbuy again ...more

Savage M-11 Trophy Hunter XP Package Review

The Savage M-11 Trophy Hunter XP is a ready-to-go hunting solution that helps simplify the learning curve. It comes preconfigured with a bore-sighted Nikon 3-9x optic with a ballistic drop compensation reticle. Take it out of the box, add ammo, and shoot. It couldn’t be easier. But that’s not all; when I say turnkey, I mean it. Of course, the obligatory gun lock is there, but so is a set of earplugs. You’ll also find an NSSF.org pamphlet that provides a brief education on gun safety. Stapled to the inside of the owners manual is a folded target you can use for zeroing the included scope. An Allen wrench tool for scope ring adjustment is there, and last, but not least, an AccuTrigger tool is there to adjust the trigger pull weight. ...more
