Patrick D on Savage Arms Stevens 301
200+ shells so far through this single shot, all without a single problem or issue. From 2 3/4 #9s to 3" 00 buck, gun functions flawless. Patterns well, great skeet shooter, recoil is not bad at all. Does have removable/changeable choke (I think it's a "tru-choke" thread pattern). Controls in logical places, kicks those spent shells right out and back 10 feet. item arrived well packaged and in a timely manner, and another great experience with buds. highly recommend product. ...more
Had to send first one back to savage, ejector broke, savage stood behind product , 5 weeks later ups brought me a new one.the first gun was very hard to open and close, the second one is just right for a new gun, the first one shot a little low (had to raise comb to get it to shoot where I wanted) the new one is right on for me. the recoil is what you would expect from a light 12ga, took rubber pad off put on bear tooth slip on, recoil problem solved .Got my first single 12ga 49 years ago and then like so many I moved on to more complicated and expensive firearms, the simple single is a great small game, turkey , and bird gun, with the screw in chokes its very versatile. the overall quality is pretty good for what you pay for these. have order ed many times from buds THEY ARE ONE OF, IF NOT THE BEST IN THE GAME!! ...more
Stevens 301 12ga... Don't care much for the push button forearm release, cheap plastic innards instead of metal. A place for sling mounts is missing from the design but it's light and easy to carry. Other than that the fit and finish is pretty good for a $140 shotgun. Stiff as a board, cleaned, oiled and worked it. About a 50% improvement so far, still a ways to go with that. Shot good on 1st outing. Light and it kicks real good with buck or slugs... Jury is still out on the forearm longevity. Buds was good as usual. ...more

Stock size
Charles, the Stevens 301 has the same "Full Size" Stock. just the shorter barrel makes it a "Compact". The 4" shorter barrel will remove approximately 100 to 120fps from the payload but the pattern will not be too different out to 45 or so yards. Past this, slightly.
